Marc Padeu is reimagining renaissance masterpieces

In the global art world, classical European masterpieces have long held a dominant position in defining sacred aesthetics, grand narratives, and historical gravity. However, Cameroonian visual artist Marc Padeu is challenging this historical monopoly by taking the iconic compositions of Old Masters such as Caravaggio, Diego Velázquez, and Titian. He’s transplanting them directly into the lush, everyday landscapes of rural Central Africa.

Padeu’s striking large-scale canvases reimagine classic biblical motifs and European artistic traditions against the backdrop of cocoa plantations and rural villages in Cameroon. Far from being a mere imitation of Western techniques, Padeu’s work represents a deliberate re-centering of world history, spiritual heritage, and local identity.

A Dual Spiritual and Cultural Inheritance

Born and raised in Cameroon, Padeu grew up navigating two distinct spiritual and cultural realities. The formal structure of Catholic devotion and the indigenous customs of Bamiléké animism. This dual background permeates his paintings, where sacred rituals and everyday agricultural labor exist side by side.

In Padeu’s compositions, classical Christian iconography such as the baptism of Christ, the martyrdom of saints or solemn biblical gatherings is integrated into scenes of fieldworkers harvesting cocoa pods along riverbanks. Rather than treating these scenes as contradictory, Padeu views them as a natural reflection of human experience. He points out that the original stories of the Bible were ultimately rooted in the lives of ordinary people engaging in daily, unvarnished labor.

Extending the Legacy of the Old Masters

When Padeu incorporates the compositions, dramatic lighting, and gestures of European Renaissance masters, his objective is not passive homage or simple satire. Instead, he describes his creative philosophy as an extension of the art historical narrative.

By placing Black African figures at the center of classical visual compositions, Padeu reframes European iconographic conventions as a shared human language. His paintings suggest that spiritual gravity, dignity and monumental art belong just as naturally to a Cameroonian cocoa harvest as they do to a 16th-century Italian cathedral.

    Bacteria that cause infections are becoming harder to treat because many of them no longer respond to common antibiotics. These bacteria known as superbugs have developed resistance to medicines that once killed them easily.  As a result infections that were once simple to treat are becoming much more dangerous. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in the United States discovered a compound called PGHI-4. When they combined it with the powerful antibiotic vancomycin it successfully killed bacteria that had already become resistant to vancomycin. Vancomycin is commonly used to treat serious bacterial infections including those caused by MRSA and Clostridioides difficile (C. diff.). Over time however some bacteria developed resistance to this important medicine making treatment much more difficult. During laboratory tests, scientists found that PGHI-4 blocks an important bacterial enzyme called SagA. Without this enzyme the bacteria’s protective cell wall becomes weaker allowing vancomycin to destroy the bacteria once again. The treatment was especially successful against drug resistant Enterococcus faecium a bacterium known for causing difficult hospital infections. Professor John Moses of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said the discovery was the result of years of chemistry research. He explained that the newly found compound blocks an enzyme that helps bacteria resist antibiotics opening the door to more effective treatments. The research team also used a modern chemical method called Diversity Oriented Clicking (DOC) to create a library of more than 150 chemical compounds. Scientists believe this technique could speed up the discovery of new medicines, not only for antibiotic resistant infections but also for diseases such as cancer. Experts say that if future studies confirm these results the same strategy could eventually help treat other dangerous drug resistant infections including tuberculosis (TB). Doctors also warn that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have made antibiotic resistance much worse. They advise people to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor and to always complete the full course of treatment. This helps reduce the chances of bacteria becoming resistant to medicines. Scientists say this research is an important reminder that many of the biggest medical breakthroughs begin in laboratories where new discoveries can lead to better treatments and save lives in the future.

    A recent outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness has spread to more parts of the United States. Health officials say the number of affected states has now increased to nine making it the largest known outbreak of its kind in the country. According to the latest update from U.S. health authorities the outbreak was first reported in Indiana Kentucky, Michigan Ohio and West Virginia. It has now also been confirmed in Illinois Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. Investigators believe most of the cases are linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico. The lettuce is believed to have been contaminated with the Cyclospora parasite. Although cyclosporiasis is usually not life threatening experts say it can cause severe symptoms.  These include frequent watery diarrhea vomiting stomach cramps nausea and extreme tiredness. Officials say people in the newly affected states became sick around the same time as earlier patients suggesting they may have been exposed to the same shipment of contaminated lettuce. Health authorities are urging anyone who develops these symptoms after eating contaminated food to seek medical care as soon as possible. The investigation into the source of the outbreak is still ongoing.

    A new medical study suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may do more than protect the heart and brain. Researchers say these healthy fats could also help keep the lungs working well for a longer time by slowing the natural decline in lung function. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods such as oily fish, fish oil supplements walnuts, flaxseeds chia seeds vegetable oils and fortified foods. They are already known for their anti inflammatory effects and may help lower the risk of heart disease stroke and some types of cancer. Now scientists believe they may also play an important role in supporting lung health. The study was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The research was led by Dr. Patricia A. Cassano from Cornell University in New York. She explained that while many studies have looked at how diet affects heart disease and cancer much less research has focused on how nutrition influences lung health. To explore this researchers carried out two separate studies. The first study followed 15,063 adults in the United States with an average age of 56. Most participants were healthy and had no diagnosed lung disease when the study began. They were monitored for between seven and 20 years. Researchers found that people with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood experienced a slower decline in lung function over time. In the second study scientists analyzed genetic data from more than 500,000 people in Europe. They examined genetic markers linked to omega-3 levels in the blood and found the same pattern. Higher omega-3 levels were associated with better lung function and healthier lungs. Although the findings are encouraging experts say omega-3 supplements should not be seen as a cure or a replacement for medical treatment. A balanced diet regular exercise avoiding smoking and following medical advice remain the best ways to protect lung health.
