Why walking slows with age

Getting older is a natural part of life and it cannot be stopped. But have you ever noticed that people often walk more slowly and feel tired more quickly as they age? A new study may explain why this happens.

Researchers from Flinders University and the University of Canberra in Australia studied how walking changes with age.  They found that as people get older the body starts to focus more on safety and balance than on walking speed.

The study included 107 healthy people between 26 and 86 years old. Researchers examined how their bodies moved while walking. They found that movement around the ankles and other muscles changes with age.

The ankle muscles play an important role in keeping the body balanced and helping people move forward. As people age the body appears to use more muscle effort to stay stable and upright.

Older adults may move the muscles around their ankles in a way that makes the ankle joints stiffer.  This can improve balance and reduce the risk of losing stability.

However there is a downside. Using the muscles this way requires more effort which can make older people feel tired sooner and walk more  slowly.

Researchers believe that the nervous system also becomes more focused on preventing falls and maintaining stability with age. The good news is that regular physical activity can help maintain movement and muscle strength.

Exercises that improve balance and strengthen the muscles may help older adults stay active and move more confidently.

    A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that artificial intelligence (AI) experts and the general public have very different opinions about the future of AI. While experts are mostly positive about its impact many people are worried that AI could replace jobs and create new challenges. According to the survey, 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive effect on the United States over the next 20 years. In comparison, only 17% of the public share that view. Both experts and the public agree that healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring the greatest benefits. They believe AI could improve medical care and support better treatment. At the same time both groups are concerned that AI may not improve the accuracy of news or election coverage. The survey also found strong support for greater control over AI. Many respondents believe governments may struggle to regulate the technology effectively as it continues to develop. Another finding is the difference between male and female AI experts. Around 63% of male experts expect AI to have a positive impact on the United States compared with 36% of female experts. Women were generally more cautious saying the technology could have both benefits and risks. The report also notes that women remain underrepresented in the AI industry. Researchers suggest that increasing women’s participation in AI development could lead to more balanced technologies. They also point out that many jobs with a large number of female workers such as administrative and customer service roles are becoming more automated increasing the risk of job losses. Overall the report shows that understanding both expert opinions and public concerns is important. As AI continues to grow balancing its benefits with responsible rules and safeguards will be essential.

  • New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

    Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail. The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail. The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images. According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases. Closer look at Sun’s surface The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured. In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope. Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma. Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed. Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters? Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work. Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear. The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.

  • Don’t ignore sprouted potatoes

    During the rainy season higher humidity can cause stored potatoes to develop sprouts.  Many people wonder whether these potatoes are still safe to eat or if they should be thrown away. Health experts say the answer depends on the condition of the potato. If a potato has only one or two small sprouts you can remove the sprouts and the surrounding area before cooking it. However potatoes with many sprouts green patches a soft texture or a shriveled appearance should be thrown away. Experts explain that these potatoes may contain higher levels of two natural toxins called solanine and chaconine. In large amounts these compounds can cause food poisoning and lead to nausea vomiting diarrhea stomach pain and other health problems. Sprouting is a natural process but it also shows that the potato is changing. As the sprouts grow the potato uses its stored nutrients loses moisture becomes soft and some of its starch turns into sugar. At the same time the levels of natural protective compounds called glycoalkaloids including solanine and chaconine may increase. These chemicals help protect the potato from insects and disease but can be harmful to people if consumed in high amounts. A study published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal in 2002 found that eating potatoes with high levels of solanine may cause nausea vomiting diarrhea and stomach cramps. In more serious cases symptoms such as headache dizziness fever drowsiness changes in heart rate and even nervous system problems may develop within a few hours. Doctors advise seeking medical care if severe or long lasting symptoms appear after eating potatoes. Experts also warn that people with diabetes should avoid heavily sprouted potatoes because some of the starch changes into sugar which may increase the potato’s glycemic index and raise blood sugar levels more quickly. Who should avoid sprouted potatoes? Health experts say young children older adults pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems should not eat sprouted green or spoiled potatoes because they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of these natural toxins. How to store potatoes properly Experts recommend storing raw potatoes in a cool dry and dark place.  They should not be kept in the refrigerator because cold temperatures can turn starch into sugar. When these potatoes are cooked at high heat they may produce higher levels of acrylamide a compound considered potentially harmful. Potatoes should also be stored away from onions as onions can speed up the sprouting process

  • Why do car turn signals click?

    When you turn your car left or right you hear the familiar click-click sound from the turn signal. At the same time the arrow on the dashboard flashes to show the signal is working. Even though cars have become much more advanced this sound has stayed the same for many years. But have you ever wondered why? Turn signals first appeared in cars in the late 1930s. In older vehicles the clicking sound came from a thermal flasher. When the driver switched on the turn signal electricity heated a small metal strip.  As it bent from the heat it completed an electrical circuit and turned the signal lights on. The metal quickly cooled returned to its original shape and broke the circuit turning the lights off. This heating and cooling cycle repeated over and over making the lights flash. The movement of the metal strip created the well known clicking sound. As technology improved car makers replaced the old thermal system with electromagnetic and later electronic systems controlled by computer chips.  These newer systems no longer need moving metal parts to flash the lights. However most modern cars still play the click click sound on purpose. Manufacturers keep it because drivers are used to hearing it and the sound reassures them that the turn signal is working correctly even though it is no longer mechanically necessary.

  • AI creates new viruses not found in nature

    US researchers have claimed to have developed new viruses with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) that did not previously exist in nature. The development is being described as an important breakthrough in the scientific community. According to a study published in the scientific journal Science, researchers from Stanford University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard used a naturally occurring phage as a basis and employed AI to generate thousands of genetic designs. A phage is a type of virus that infects bacteria. The researchers chemically synthesized around 300 of these genetic designs and tested them in a laboratory. Of these, 16 viruses proved to be viable. According to the study, a combination of the AI-designed viruses was more effective than naturally occurring viruses at eliminating E. coli bacteria. The researchers said the approach expands the scope of synthetic genomics and could pave the way for more effective phage therapies against rapidly evolving pathogens. However, experts have expressed concerns about potential biological security risks alongside the possible medical benefits of the development. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Toronto and Toronto General Hospital said AI-designed viruses could have certain benefits such as creating specialized bacteriophages that could help tackle antibiotic-resistant infections. He warned that the same ability to design complete and functional viruses could pose a serious biological security threat if used to create harmful pathogens. Therefore, strong safety regulations, screening and monitoring are necessary alongside the technology. Professor Fatima Wafai of the University of New South Wales in Sydney said the current research does not pose a direct threat to humans because phages infect only bacteria. However, she noted that the methods used in the research could potentially be misused for harmful purposes. Tom Ellis, an expert in synthetic genome engineering at Imperial College London described the research as impressive but said it also demonstrates that AI is still far from being able to design complex genomes, cells and large viruses. He explained that the phage genome used in the study is very small and relatively simple while the genome of the virus that causes COVID-19 is approximately six times larger. The complexity of designing larger genomes increases rapidly. According to Ellis, the research does have implications for biological security. However, modifying naturally occurring viruses remains a more serious and immediate threat than creating new pathogens with AI. Hsu Li Yang, director of the Asia Centre for Health Security in Singapore also said that it may be possible to use AI to make viruses more dangerous. However, he cautioned against exaggerating the implications of the research. He clarified that the study does not mean that anyone with basic scientific or laboratory knowledge can now create life-saving or dangerous viruses at home. Considerable technical expertise is still required to physically produce a virus in a laboratory after it has been designed. Experts say the research is both medically promising and concerning from a biological security perspective as it demonstrates a technology that could potentially be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes.

  • Short intense exercise may benefit your body

    A new study suggests that you may not need to spend hours exercising every day to support your health.  Even a few minutes of very intense physical activity can cause important changes inside the body. Researchers found that intense exercise can quickly change hundreds of proteins in the blood These proteins are linked to heart health metabolism body fat and other important body functions. What did the study find? The researchers compared short high-intensity cycling with cycling at a normal pace.  Participants completed several 30-second bursts of very fast cycling with about four minutes of rest between each burst. After the intense exercise changes were found in 714 blood proteins. In comparison only 7 proteins showed similar changes after normal paced cycling. This suggests that exercise intensity can strongly affect how the body responds. What happens during intense exercise? During hard exercise the body produces different chemical signals.  One of them is called Lac-Phe, which has been linked to appetite energy use and other body processes. These signals may also affect metabolism and how fat cells work. Some of the protein changes seen in the study were connected to processes related to heart disease type 2 diabetes and obesity. Researchers also examined data from more than 53,000 people. Some of the proteins affected by intense exercise were linked to healthy aging heart health and the risk of metabolic diseases. Is a few minutes of exercise enough? The findings do not mean that three minutes of intense exercise can completely replace a longer workout.  Different types of exercise provide different benefits. Longer moderate exercise can still be important for improving endurance muscle strength and heart and lung health. However the study shows that even short periods of intense activity may have meaningful effects on the body. For people with busy schedules adding brief bursts of physical activity to their daily routine could be a practical option. However high intensity exercise is not suitable for everyone. People who have not exercised for a long time or have a medical condition should speak with a healthcare professional before starting intense workouts.
