glass fruit juice

A glass of fruit juice may lift your mood

Feeling stressed, low or unhappy from time to time is common.  A recent study suggests that adding a small glass of 100% fruit juice or a fruit smoothie to your daily diet may help improve your mood.

Researchers from Newcastle University studied 42 people who normally ate very few fruits and vegetables.  The participants were divided into groups and followed for four weeks.

The researchers then looked at changes in their diet and mood. The results showed that people who added a glass of natural fruit juice to their daily diet experienced better mood and lower levels of stress.

Some people worry that fruit juice contains natural sugar and may be unhealthy. However during this short study researchers did not find any harmful effects on the participants physical health.

Researcher Courtney Neal said that eating several portions of fruits and vegetables every day can be difficult for some people.  Having a small glass of 100% fruit juice or a smoothie can be an easy way to add more nutrients to the diet.

Newcastle University lecturer oliver Shannon said the results were encouraging but more research is needed especially among people dealing with mental health problems.

However this does not mean people should start drinking large amounts of juice. The study focused on small amounts of 100% fruit juice or smoothies while eating whole fruits and vegetables remains important.

Experts also stress that depression is a complex mental health condition.  Fruit juice should not be considered a treatment for depression.

Anyone experiencing long lasting sadness stress or loss of interest in daily life should speak with a doctor or mental health professional.

  • The unforgettable legacy of Raja Mehdi Ali Khan

Twentieth-century Urdu literature and Indian cinema was shaped by figures whose creativity crossed literary traditions and popular entertainment. Among these luminaries, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan stands out as a unique persona connecting high-art literary satire and immortal Bollywood melodies. This legend was born in 1915 in the historical town of Wazirabad. Khan was an observer of culture. He inherited a formidable poetic pedigree that caused him to be one of the most celebrated humorists and lyricists of his era. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan’s literary inclinations were virtually coded into his lineage. He was related to the renowned journalist and political figure Maulana Zafar Ali Khan. He was raised in an environment saturated with verse and socio-political commentary. Moreover, his mother was a recognized poetess in her own right. She taught him a deep reverence for language and rhythmic expression from an early age. This environment nurtured his inherent talent, allowing him to absorb classical Urdu poetic conventions while developing an understated wit that would define his future work. Before making a name for himself in the cinema, Khan began his journey in print journalism. He contributed prolifically to prominent periodicals and literary magazines of the era. The names included Monthly Alamgir, Weekly Khayyam, Tehzeeb-e-Niswan and Do Phool. His early journalistic writings allowed him to polish his observational skills. Whether analyzing social norms or painting witty portraits of everyday life, his prose stood out for its accessibility and warmth. Later, he transitioned into radio broadcasting. It’s considered a medium that further refined his sense of auditory storytelling and lyrical timing. He was driven by creative ambition. Later, Khan relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai) during a transformative era for Indian cinema. His entry into the film industry marked the beginning of a golden age for Hindi film music. He partnered with legendary music composers such as Madan Mohan. Khan penned lyrics that transcended simple movie themes, capturing profound emotional truths. His songs have proved to be timeless masterpieces, continuing to resonate across generations. Among his most iconic works are: hai isi mein pyaar ki aabru wo jafa karen main wafa karun jo wafa bhi kaam na aa sake to wahi kahen ki main kya karun Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Anpadh (1962) His celebrated catalog includes evergreen classics. Lag Jaa Gale (Woh Kaun Thi?): Widely regarded as one of the greatest romantic ballads in Hindi cinema. Aapki Nazron Ne Samjha (Anpadh): A masterpiece of subtle expression and devotion. What set Raja Mehdi Ali Khan apart from many of his contemporaries was his dual identity.  Film audiences revered him for his deeply romantic and melancholic lyrics. On contrary, the literary world celebrated him as an exceptionally gifted humorist and satirist. Even amidst his demanding schedule in Bombay’s competitive cinematic landscape, Khan never abandoned his literary roots. His satirical essays and humorous poems were regularly featured in leading newspapers and journals across both India and Pakistan. His humor was rarely cynical. Instead, it offered a gentle, witty critique of human flaws, societal absurdities, and the complexities of modern living. Khan proved that high literary craft could flourish alongside popular music. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan passed away leaving behind a rich archive of literary contributions and cinematic songs that continue to be sung, reimagined, and loved today. His life journey from the quiet streets of Wazirabad to the recording studios of Bombay embodies the shared cultural heritage of the Indian subcontinent. His art remains vibrant and melodious whether delivered in a literary journal or sung by iconic playback singers.

  • China’s Rising Global Image: Insights from the 2026  Pew Research Survey

By Absara Kashaf  The international political landscape is undergoing a noticeable transformation. For many years, the United States was widely regarded as the world’s most influential political, economic and military power. However, recent global opinion surveys indicate that public perceptions are changing. Countries around the world are increasingly evaluating global powers not only by their military strength but also by their economic cooperation, development assistance, investment and diplomatic engagement. The Latest Pew Research Center Global Attitudes Survey (july 2026) provides important evidence of this shift. Based on interviews with 42,151 adults across 36 countries, the survey reveals that China now enjoys a more favorable public image than the United States in a majority of the countries included in the study. The findings highlights China’s growing international influence, particularly among developing and middle-income nations. One of the survey’s most significant findings is that China is viewed more favorably than the United States in 30 of the 36 countries surveyed. This represents a remarkable change in global public opinion. While the United States continues to enjoy strong support in few countries, particularly among some of its long-standing allies, China has gained considerable public approval across Asia, Latin America, and parts of Europe. This shift suggests that many people now associate China with economic opportunity, infrastructure development, and long-term cooperation rather than viewing it solely as an emerging global competitor. China’s growing popularity is closely linked to its expanding economic partnerships around the world. Over the past two decades, China has invested billions in infrastructure projects, transportation networks, energy development, industrial zones, digital connectivity and trade agreements. Through initiatives such as Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has financed highways, railways, ports, power plants, and industrial zones in numerous developing countries. These projects have contributes to economic growth, employment opportunities and improved connectivity in many regions. As a result, public opinion in several countries increasingly reflects appreciation for China’s contribution to national development. The survey further shows that 69 percent of respondents in 17 middle-income countries consider China to be somewhat or very reliable international partner. This finding is particularly important because middle-income countries often seek foreign investment, technology and infrastructure financing to support their development goals. Many respondents appear to believe that China provides practical economic cooperation without imposing extensive political conditions. Whether this perception fully reflects reality remains a subject of academic debate, but it undoubtedly contributes to China’s improving international image. Another major finding concerns confidence in Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to the survey, global confidence in Xi Jinping has improved compared to previous years. Across many countries,  larger number of respondents believe that President Xi will make responsible decisions regarding international affairs. Although confidence levels differ from one country to another, the overall trend indicates that China’s leadership is gaining broader international acceptance. Leadership perceptions often influence how countries are viewed internationally, making this finding particularly significant for understanding China’s growing diplomatic influence. Among all the countries surveyed, Pakistan recorded one of the strongest levels of support for China. According to the survey, 90 percent of Pakistanis expressed a favorable opinion of China, while 83 percent reported confidence in President Xi Jinping to do the right things regarding world affairs. These are among the highest approval ratings recorded anywhere in the survey. In contrast, only 15 percent of Pakistanis expressed a favorable opinion of the United States, while confidence in former U.S President Donald Trump stood at just 12 percent. These figures demonstrate the exceptionally positive image that China currently enjoys among the Pakistani public. Several factors help explain Pakistan’s strong support for China. The two countries have maintained close diplomatic and strategic relations for decades, often referring to their friendship as an “all-weather strategic partnership”. In recent years, this relationship has expanded significantly through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), one of the flagship projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. CPEC includes investments in roads, highways, ports, power generations, industrial zones, and communication infrastructure. Many Pakistanis associate these projects with improved economic opportunities, enhanced connectivity, and future development. Consequently, China’s image among Pakistani Public has become increasingly positive Beyond Pakistan, the survey also suggests that China is increasingly perceived as a contributor to global peace and stability. One notable example is South Africa, where the proportion of respondents who believe China contributes positively to global peace increased from 47 percent in 2023 to 64 percent in 2026. Similar improvements were observed in several other developing countries. China’s active participation in diplomatic negotiations, peacemaking missions, humanitarian assistance, and international development initiatives appears to have strengthened its reputation among many respondents. The survey also explores whether people believe China considers the interest of developing countries when making international policy decisions. Among respondents in the 17 middle-income countries, 57 percent stated that China takes the interests of countries like their own into account. This finding reflects an important aspect of China’s international strategy. Many developing countries view China as a partner that understands their development challenges and provides economic cooperation through investment, trade, infrastructure financing, and technology transfer. Whether this perception continues in the future will depend on China’s policies and long-tern outcomes of its international projects Despite China’s growing popularity, the survey also demonstrates the global opinion remains diverse. Several countries continue to express stronger support for the United States than for the China. These include Japan, India, Philippines, Israel, Poland, and South Korea. Historical alliances, security partnerships, regional geopolitical concerns, and territorial disputes continue to influence public opinions across countries. The findings also illustrated the growing importance if soft power illustrates the growing importance of soft power in international relations. Soft power refers to a country’s ability to influence others through attraction, cooperation, culture, diplomacy and economic engagement rather than military force. China’s engagement in infrastructure, trade, education techonolgy in many developing countries have strengthened its soft power in many developing countries. Public opinion surveys such as Pew’s demonstrate that these efforts are increasingly shaping how ordinary citizens perceive China’s global role. The finding offer important insights

  • Vaping shift may lower future cancer rates

In the United States, the growing shift from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes and other nicotine products could potentially lead to a decline in cancer rates in the future. A new study published in JNCI Cancer Spectrum analyzed data from US federal health surveys collected between 2015 and 2023. According to the study, traditional cigarette smoking declined significantly across almost all age groups during this period with the decline being particularly noticeable among people aged 18 to 34. In contrast, the number of people using only alternative nicotine products particularly e-cigarettes, increased. The study’s lead researcher, Professor Kenneth Michael Cummings of the Medical University of South Carolina said the trend suggests that many smokers are completely switching to vaping rather than using both products simultaneously. The study found that the proportion of people who used both cigarettes and e-cigarettes remained around 2% to 3% throughout the study period. Scientists also developed a Population Harm Reduction Index to compare traditional cigarette smoking with the use of non-combustible nicotine products. According to the researchers, an increase in the index indicates that more people are using alternatives to traditional cigarettes that may expose them to lower levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals. The study found that people aged 55 and above were much less likely than younger people to quit smoking and switch to alternative products even though older adults could gain significant immediate health benefits from quitting smoking. According to the study, vaping has now become more common than cigarette smoking among young people aged 18 to 24. Professor Cummings said the greatest concern is that older people who have smoked for many years are not switching to lower-risk, non-combustible nicotine products as quickly. This is the group that could potentially gain the greatest immediate health benefits from quitting smoking. According to the report, the study was funded by the US National Cancer Institute and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) while the vaping industry provided no financial support.

  • Why does your nose get blocked at night?

Do you breathe normally during the day but find your nose getting blocked as soon as you lie down at night?  This is a common problem for many people. A blocked nose can disturb sleep force you to breathe through your mouth and leave you with a dry mouth or sore  throat in the morning. Many people think a blocked nose is only caused by a cold but doctors say there can be several other reasons. Your sleeping position One of the most common reasons is the position of your body while sleeping.  During the day when you are sitting or standing gravity helps mucus drain from the nose. When you lie down mucus can collect inside the nasal passages making the nose feel blocked and making breathing more difficult. Natural changes at night The body also goes through natural changes during sleep.  Hormone levels and nerve activity can affect the blood vessels and tissues inside the nose. These changes may increase swelling or mucus in the nasal passages. People who already have allergies or nasal inflammation may notice the problem more strongly at night. Allergies in the bedroom Allergies can be another major reason for nighttime nasal blockage.  If your nose becomes blocked mainly after going to bed check your sleeping environment. Dust, bedding, pillows, curtains and carpets can contain tiny dust mites that may trigger allergies.  Damp walls and mold can also cause sneezing, itching and a blocked nose. Regularly washing bedding cleaning the room and keeping the sleeping area dry may help reduce these triggers. Acid reflux can also play a role Acid reflux may also cause problems at night. Eating a heavy meal and lying down soon afterward can allow stomach acid to move toward the throat. This may cause throat irritation and sometimes a feeling of nasal blockage. If you also experience heartburn a sour taste in the mouth frequent throat clearing or a burning throat in the morning it is better to speak with a doctor. Simple ways to feel better If you wake up with a blocked nose a saline nasal rinse may help clear mucus and make breathing easier.  Use a properly prepared saline solution and follow safe instructions when rinsing the nose. If your throat feels irritated gargling with warm salt water may provide some relief. Good oral hygiene is also important for overall mouth and throat health. When should you see a doctor? Occasional nasal blockage is usually not a major concern. However you should not ignore it if your nose is blocked every night or your sleep is regularly disturbed. See a doctor if you have persistent sneezing, facial pain headaches fever breathing difficulty or ongoing nasal discharge. Finding the real cause of nighttime nasal blockage can help improve both your sleep and breathing.
