The prime minister appreciated the leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir and the contribution of technology partner ZTE in making the project possible. He said the country’s achievements during difficult times showed that challenges could be overcome through unity, determination and hard work.

Shehbaz Sharif said projects like Sky47 represent Pakistan’s future and would contribute to national progress. He thanked all stakeholders involved in delivering the facility and said such initiatives would enhance the country’s digital security and technological capabilities.

Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the inauguration of the Sky47 Data Centre marked the beginning of a new era of artificial intelligence in Pakistan.

She said the project would open doors to new economic opportunities and allow Pakistan to better utilise its resources, data and skilled workforce.

The minister added that transforming data into practical solutions and converting artificial intelligence into economic value would be crucial for future growth. She said the global AI race would depend on secure, affordable and effective use of technology.

Houthis target Saudi Aramco refinery in drone atta…

RIYADH/SANAA: Regional tensions have taken another dangerous turn after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group claimed it carried out a drone attack on Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, while a separate barrage of missiles and drones reportedly struck the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Mokha. The developments come as security concerns continue to grow across the Red Sea and Gulf, adding another layer to an already volatile regional situation. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had targeted the Aramco refinery in Jazan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, with drones. Saudi authorities confirmed that a fire had broken out at the facility but said it had been brought under control and that no casualties had been reported. Saudi officials did not immediately attribute the fire to the alleged Houthi attack, leaving some details surrounding the incident unclear. The Jazan refinery is a strategically important energy facility on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. The complex has a crude-processing capacity of around 400,000 barrels per day and produces products including gasoline and ultra-low-sulfur diesel. The latest incident is not the first time Houthi attacks have been reported against Saudi energy infrastructure. The Jazan facility was also reportedly affected by an attack in late July, with parts of its gasification complex and tank farm suffering damage, according to reports. Mokha Port Also Hit The situation became even more serious when Houthi forces reportedly launched missiles and drones toward Mokha, a strategically located port city on Yemen’s western coast. Yemeni government forces and medical sources initially reported at least seven deaths, including civilians and military personnel. Later reports put the death toll at 11, with eight military personnel and three civilians among those killed. Around 32 people were reportedly wounded, although casualty figures varied between sources. Yemeni military officials said air-defence systems intercepted 11 Houthi drones during the attacks. Damage was also reported to civilian and commercial infrastructure around the port. The attacks come against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. The Houthis have also previously threatened measures affecting shipping in the Red Sea, framing their actions as retaliation for Saudi policies toward Yemen. The latest escalation is particularly notable because Saudi Arabia has recently deepened its defence cooperation with Pakistan and Türkiye. The new security arrangement has been presented as a collective defence framework in which an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all. With attacks now reported near both Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, fears are growing that the conflict could further disrupt an already sensitive regional security and trade environment.

Bangladesh PM won’t visit India until Hasina ext…

DHAKA: Bangladesh has said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not travel to India until New Delhi takes steps to extradite former premier Sheikh Hasina, adding a new hurdle to efforts to improve relations between the two neighbouring countries. The statement came on Sunday as speculation grew over a possible visit by Rahman to India next week. Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official A.K.M. Shahidul Karim said the government wanted the necessary conditions to be created before any such trip. “We are of the view that a propitious environment needs to be created for the visit,” Karim told reporters, urging Indian authorities to speed up the extradition process involving Hasina and other fugitives. Hasina fled to India after deadly anti-government protests toppled her government in 2024. She has since remained in the neighbouring country while facing a death sentence in Bangladesh following her conviction on crimes against humanity charges. India has acknowledged receiving Bangladesh’s extradition request but has said the matter remains “under examination”. Relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have remained strained since the dramatic political upheaval that ended Hasina’s long rule. The former prime minister, once regarded as a key partner of India, has continued to make public statements from India, further complicating diplomatic efforts. Karim said recent media interactions by Hasina had also affected the environment for closer ties. “But the process has been vitiated by Sheikh Hasina’s open media interactions, despite her being a convict in crimes against humanity,” he said. The possibility of a Rahman visit had gained attention after Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met the Bangladeshi prime minister last week. Karim confirmed that officials from both countries had also remained in contact in recent weeks over the possibility of a visit. Rahman assumed office in February and has already travelled to Malaysia and China. His decision not to make India his first overseas destination marked a departure from a longstanding pattern among Bangladeshi leaders. Meanwhile, Hasina has said she intends to return to Bangladesh in December, even if she faces imprisonment. Karim also outlined Dhaka’s broader foreign-policy approach, saying the government would pursue a “Bangladesh First” policy focused on national sovereignty and non-interference while maintaining mutually beneficial relations with India and other countries. The latest development highlights how Hasina’s presence in India remains a major obstacle in the already delicate relationship between the two South Asian neighbours.

Govt increases petrol by Rs1.09, HSD by Rs2.42

The government on Thursday increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.09 and Rs2.42 per litre, respectively, passing on the impact of fluctuating global oil prices amid ongoing Middle East tensions. Following the revision, petrol will retail at Rs336.15 per litre, while HSD will cost Rs393.04 per litre. The government continues to levy Rs110 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs96 per litre on diesel. The Petroleum Division’s notification said the new prices would be applicable for July 31 (Friday). The diesel price has come down from a peak of Rs520.35 recorded on April 3, after beginning its upward trajectory from Rs281 per litre when the US-Iran war broke out on February 28. Similarly, petrol had peaked at Rs458.41 on April 3 after rising from Rs266 in the first week of March. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would now be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US. The government had been announcing weekly revisions since early March, alongside conservation measures amid possible oil supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In April, the federal government also announced targeted relief measures to provide subsidised fuel. The petroleum minister stated that the cabinet and the prime minister had decided to give the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of deciding fuel prices on a daily basis based on international market trends. The daily pricing decision was rejected by the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which said it would consider a protest plan this week. Petrol is mainly used in private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers, and changes in its price affect the middle and lower-middle classes. Similarly, diesel price changes impact the public at large, as it is primarily used in the heavy transport sector, power plants and large generators. Petrol and HSD are the major revenue earners, with monthly sales of about 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes, compared to just 10,000 tonnes of monthly demand for kerosene.
