The Loss of Privacy in the Modern World

By Sania Rahim

Have you ever noticed how much of your life exists online? From social media posts and online shopping to mobile apps and search engines, almost everything we do leaves a digital footprint. Technology has made communication faster, improved access to information, and made daily life more convenient. However, it has also created a serious problem: the loss of privacy. Many people share personal information without realizing how easily it can be collected, stored, analyzed, and even misused. In today’s digital world, protecting privacy has become more important than ever before.

One of the main reasons for the loss of privacy is the widespread use of social media. Millions of people share their photos, locations, opinions, and personal experiences every day. While social media helps people stay connected with friends and family, it also allows strangers, advertisers, and even cybercriminals to access personal information. Many users do not read privacy policies or adjust their privacy settings, making their accounts and personal data more vulnerable to misuse.

Another major concern is the collection of personal data by websites, online platforms, and mobile applications. Many apps request access to our contacts, camera, microphone, location, and other personal information, even when such access is not necessary for their services. This data is often used to provide personalized advertisements or improve user experience, but it may also be shared with third parties without users fully understanding how their information is being handled. In some cases, data breaches expose the personal details of millions of people.

The loss of privacy can have serious consequences. It increases the risk of identity theft, online scams, cyberbullying, financial fraud, and unauthorized access to personal accounts. Once information is uploaded to the internet, it is often difficult—or even impossible—to remove it completely. A single careless post or data leak can damage a person’s reputation, affect future education or employment opportunities, and threaten personal security.

Protecting privacy requires both awareness and responsibility. People should create strong and unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication, avoid sharing sensitive information online, and carefully review the permissions they grant to apps and websites. They should also update their software regularly and think carefully before clicking suspicious links or downloading unknown files. Schools, families, and governments should educate people about digital safety, cybersecurity, and responsible online behavior.

Privacy is not just a personal preference; it is a basic human right. As technology continues to advance, we must enjoy its benefits without sacrificing our security, freedom, and personal privacy. By making informed choices, using technology responsibly, and respecting the privacy of others, we can help build a safer, more secure, and more trustworthy digital world for future generations.

  • Online Harassment and Cybercrime in Pakistan: High Court Strengthens Protection of Digital Rights

By Syeda Shehar Bano Bukhari Introduction: The rapid growth of social media and digital communication has transformed how people interact, work, and share information. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and other online services have become an important part of everyday life. However, the expansion of digital spaces has also created new forms of crime, including cyber harassment, online blackmail, identity theft, unauthorized sharing of private information, and the misuse of digital content. In Pakistan, cybercrime has become an increasingly important legal issue. Courts are now required to balance the protection of individuals from online abuse with fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and privacy. Recent judicial rulings have highlighted the need for effective investigation, proper use of digital evidence, and protection of victims of online harassment. Background of the Legal Issue: Online harassment can take many forms. It may involve sending threatening messages, repeatedly contacting a person against their wishes, creating fake social media accounts, spreading private photographs, or publishing false information to damage someone’s reputation.  Women are particularly vulnerable to certain forms of online harassment. In some cases, social media platforms are used to threaten women with the publication of private photographs or videos. Such conduct can cause serious psychological distress and may affect a person’s family relationships, education, employment, and social reputation. The problem becomes more complicated when victims hesitate to report such incidents because of social pressure or fear of further harassment. As a result, many cases of online abuse may remain unreported. Role of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act: Pakistan’s main legal framework for dealing with cybercrime is the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (PECA). The law provides criminal penalties for several forms of unlawful activity carried out through information technology and electronic communication. The law covers offences relating to unauthorized access, interference with information systems, cyberstalking, harassment, identity-related offences, and the misuse of electronic information. Under the legal framework, victims of cyber harassment can approach the relevant authorities and provide evidence such as screenshots, messages, emails, social media links, recordings, and other digital material. Such evidence may assist investigators in identifying the accused and establishing the circumstances of the alleged offence. Importance of Digital Evidence: One of the most important aspects of cybercrime cases is the collection and preservation of digital evidence. Unlike traditional crimes, online offences often leave electronic traces. For example, if an individual repeatedly threatens another person through WhatsApp messages, the victim may preserve screenshots, message records, telephone numbers, and other relevant information. Similarly, if a fake social media account is created to impersonate someone, the account link and associated digital information may become important evidence. However, digital evidence must be properly collected and authenticated. Courts must ensure that evidence presented before them is reliable and has not been manipulated by the offenders in connivance with the authorities. This makes forensic investigation an important part of modern criminal justice. Freedom of Expression and Online Abuse: The regulation of online content also raises questions concerning freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right, provided by the Constitution of Pakistan, 1973, but it is not unlimited and is also restricted. The law may impose reasonable restrictions in certain circumstances, including where speech involves threats, harassment, incitement to violence, or other unlawful conduct. The challenge for courts and law-enforcement authorities is to distinguish between legitimate criticism and unlawful online abuse. For example, a person criticizing a public official’s policies may be exercising freedom of expression. However, repeatedly threatening that official with violence or publishing private information with the intention of causing harm may cross the boundary between protected expression and unlawful conduct. Therefore, effective cybercrime laws must protect both individual safety and legitimate freedom of expression. A Real-Life Example: Consider a situation in which a woman receives repeated threatening messages from an unknown social media account. The person behind the account threatens to publish her private photographs unless she follows certain demands. Such conduct may create fear and psychological pressure. The victim can preserve the messages, take screenshots, record relevant account information, and report the matter to the appropriate authorities. The case demonstrates why awareness of digital rights and legal remedies is important. Victims should know that online harassment is not simply a personal disagreement; depending on the circumstances, it may constitute a criminal offence. Challenges in Cybercrime Investigations: Despite the existence of cybercrime laws, several challenges can affect the investigation and prosecution of online offences. First, offenders may use fake identities or anonymous accounts. Second, digital evidence can be deleted or altered quickly. Third, cybercrime investigations often require specialized technical expertise.  Another challenge is the international nature of the internet. An offender may operate from another country while targeting a victim in Pakistan. In such circumstances, obtaining evidence and identifying the person responsible may require international cooperation. These challenges demonstrate the need for trained investigators, modern forensic laboratories, effective cooperation between institutions, and public awareness. Protection of Victims: Victim protection is an important part of the response to cybercrime. Victims of online harassment may experience anxiety, fear, depression, and social pressure. In cases involving private images or blackmail, the psychological consequences can be particularly severe and damaging. Legal institutions should therefore ensure that victims can report complaints safely and confidentially. Investigations should be conducted professionally, and unnecessary exposure of victims’ private information should be avoided. The justice system should also recognize that victims of cyber harassment may require psychological and social support in addition to legal remedies. Broader Legal Significance: The increasing number of cybercrime cases demonstrates that traditional concepts of criminal law must adapt to technological developments. Crimes committed through digital platforms can cause real-world harm, even when the offender and victim never meet physically. The legal system must therefore develop effective methods for dealing with electronic evidence, online anonymity, cross-border offences, and rapidly changing technology. At the same time, laws should be applied carefully so that legitimate criticism, journalism, and freedom of expression are not unnecessarily restricted. A balanced legal approach is necessary to

  • Emotional Dolphin moment

A touching video from Australia has left many people emotional after showing a mother dolphin swimming with her dead baby. The viral footage shows the female dolphin gently carrying her calf while other dolphins stay close appearing to support her during the difficult moment. According to the marine conservation group Geographe Marine Research the mother dolphin named Friggle gave birth to the calf about two weeks before the video was recorded. The organization said the video was filmed last month. Friggle had reportedly lost four calves in the past and this calf was also born during winter a season when young dolphins have a lower chance of survival. Experts say it is not unusual for mother dolphins to carry their dead calves for several days after they die. This behavior is believed to be part of their grieving process. Eventually the mother must let go of the calf so she can find food and continue to survive.

  • Obsession with cannibalism as the metaphor for love

Social media ecosystems have turned toward a darker trope to articulate the depths of romantic obsession: cannibalism. Curated mood boards are featuring imagery of raw meat, overripe pomegranates, and bloodied lovers. Viral poetry is explicitly framing consumption as intimacy. The internet has revitalized an ancient literary standard. But why has this unsettling imagery captured the imagination of so many digital creators today? If you scroll through modern aesthetic feeds, you will quickly encounter a redundant visual language centered on bodily devotion. The imagery often combines classical romance with motifs of physical destruction and ingestion. Visual art depicting lovers covered in blood or blurring the boundary between violence and affection. Photographs of bruised, overripe red fruits, notably pomegranates, bursting open. Mostly, the graphics are serving as vivid stand-ins for human flesh and emotion. Stills from cinematic works featuring vampires and monsters. The act of biting or feeding is inextricably linked to passion. Images of cuts of raw meat juxtaposed against soft, romantic lighting. Verse that frames complete surrender as allowing oneself to be digested, bitten, or absorbed by a partner. A prime example of this sentiment comes from writer Azra T.’s poem ‘Fruit’: Peel your heart like a pomegranate. Offer it to him, palms outwards. Say ‘eat.’ Watch him come away stained red by you. You’re in his teeth. He’ll kiss you with that mouth. The poem depicts the core ethos of this aesthetic. Total self-offering, emotional vulnerability pushed to its absolute physical extreme, and a desire to permanently mark and be integrated into the person you love. The surge of cannibalism-as-love content feels distinctly accustomed to the melodrama of internet subcultures. However, it is far from a contemporary invention. The urge to frame love as an act of consumption has deep historical and cultural roots.  Why Is the Metaphor Resonating Now? This world is driven by digital interactions and transactional relationships. So, the urge to consume and be consumed represents a longing for absolute vulnerability. When someone invokes cannibalism in a romantic context, they aren’t expressing a literal desire for violence. Instead, they are grasping for a metaphor extreme enough to convey a few core human desires. To be ingested is to become a part of someone else forever. Their body will be physically reshaped by your presence. Traditional closeness still leaves a physical boundary between two individuals. Consumption erases that barrier entirely. Two become one in the most literal sense conceivable. Giving up oneself entirely to be possessed by another is the ultimate gesture of trust. Ultimately, the rise of the cannibalism-as-love highlights an overwhelming power of affection. By reaching for the extreme, internet culture finds a way to express what ordinary romantic language fails to capture. A devotion so grand, so terrifying, and so profound that it borders on the appetite.

  • Why are chip bags filled with air?

Many people feel disappointed after opening a bag of chips because it looks much fuller from the outside than it does inside. It may seem like the bag is filled with air instead of chips but there is a good reason for it. The gas inside a chip bag is not ordinary air. Before sealing the bag, manufacturers fill it with nitrogen gas. Nitrogen is colorless odorless and makes up most of the air we breathe.  It is also safe for food and does not react easily with it. If oxygen were left inside the bag the oil in the chips could spoil more quickly causing the chips to lose their fresh taste and become stale. Nitrogen helps keep the chips fresh crispy and tasty for a longer time. The extra space inside the bag also works like a cushion. Chips are very fragile and can easily break during transport from the factory to warehouses trucks stores and finally to customers. The nitrogen filled space absorbs pressure and protects the chips from being crushed. Some people wonder why companies do not simply use smaller bags.  The size of the bag is designed to protect the product work with packing machines and make shipping easier. Different types of chips also need different amounts of space because of their shape and size. The amount of chips is based on weight not how full the bag looks. That is why the package clearly shows the net weight of the chips even if there appears to be empty space inside. So, the next time you open a bag of chips remember that the “air” is not there to trick you. It is there to keep your chips fresh crispy and protected until they reach you.
