chip bags filled

Why are chip bags filled with air?

Many people feel disappointed after opening a bag of chips because it looks much fuller from the outside than it does inside.

It may seem like the bag is filled with air instead of chips but there is a good reason for it.

The gas inside a chip bag is not ordinary air. Before sealing the bag, manufacturers fill it with nitrogen gas.

Nitrogen is colorless odorless and makes up most of the air we breathe.  It is also safe for food and does not react easily with it.

If oxygen were left inside the bag the oil in the chips could spoil more quickly causing the chips to lose their fresh taste and become stale.

Nitrogen helps keep the chips fresh crispy and tasty for a longer time. The extra space inside the bag also works like a cushion. Chips are very fragile and can easily break during transport from the factory to warehouses trucks stores and finally to customers.

The nitrogen filled space absorbs pressure and protects the chips from being crushed.

Some people wonder why companies do not simply use smaller bags.  The size of the bag is designed to protect the product work with packing machines and make shipping easier.

Different types of chips also need different amounts of space because of their shape and size.

The amount of chips is based on weight not how full the bag looks. That is why the package clearly shows the net weight of the chips even if there appears to be empty space inside.

So, the next time you open a bag of chips remember that the “air” is not there to trick you. It is there to keep your chips fresh crispy and protected until they reach you.

  • Parents stress linked to giving children smartphones

Many parents give smartphones to their children and a major reason behind this behaviour has now been identified. Parents who experience stress tend to give their children devices to keep them occupied or calm while also being less likely to enforce limits on screen time. A study conducted by the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University included 822 parents raising children between the ages of 4 and 8. The participants provided information through online surveys about their children’s behavior, parental stress and screen-time habits. The findings showed that parents tend to allow their children to use smartphones for longer periods when their children’s behaviour becomes difficult to manage. Researchers said parents should not hesitate to seek support for managing their own stress. They also advised parents to set limits on children’s screen time and provide them with purposeful, age-appropriate content. They emphasized that parents should establish appropriate boundaries and spend quality time with their children to promote a healthy environment. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on children’s excessive smartphone use. A study published in January 2026 explored links between online content and problems related to children’s development. Similarly, research published in BMC Public Health in October 2024 found that spending excessive time in front of screens can have negative effects on mental health. The risk of depression, anxiety, irritability and other problems was particularly higher among children aged 9 and 10. The research found that the more time children spent in front of screens, the more severe their symptoms of depression tended to be. According to the study, activities such as video chatting, watching videos and playing video games were associated with a greater increase in this risk.

  • How Lahore’s historic Neela Gumbad is emerging from decades of clutter

For generations of Lahoris, the name Neela Gumbad (Blue Dome) referred to a bustling commercial center. The kind of place you visited to purchase a bicycle, repair a motor tire, or navigate a maze of auto parts shops.  Behind Anarkali Bazaar, the name itself felt almost metaphoric, as the physical blue dome was impossible to see from the main street. The location was swallowed whole by decades of unregulated commercial expansion, illegal encroachments, dangling electrical wires, and storefronts. One of Lahore’s most significant 17th-century heritage landmarks had been completely erased from the public eye. Now, a major initiative led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz under the government’s heritage restoration project is finally breathing new life into the centuries-old monument. The history of Neela Gumbad records back to 1673 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The complex was constructed as the final resting place and shrine for the venerated Sufi saint Sheikh Abdul Razzaq (often referred to as Abdur Razzaq Makki).  The tomb earned its famous moniker from Central Asian-style blue glazed tiles that adorned its central dome. However, as Lahore expanded into a modern metropolis throughout the 20th century, the historic shrine fell victim to severe urbanisation. The area around the tomb transformed into the infamous Neela Gumbad Cycle Market. Bulky, multi-story cycle shops, workshops, and illegal extensions were constructed directly against the shrine’s perimeter walls. Over time, the once-spacious courtyard and surrounding greenery vanished. Therefore, reducing the ancient monument to a claustrophobic nook completely hidden by concrete, rusted signboards and traffic congestion. Visitors to the area could spend hours in the market without realizing that a 350-year-old Mughal-era tomb stood there behind the shops. The ongoing restoration effort is radically altering the landscape of the area. To restore the monument’s historical dignity, the provincial government initiated a massive clearance operation. Recognizing the economic impact on local merchants, millions of rupees in compensation checks were distributed to dozens of affected shopkeepers and property owners surrounding the shrine prior to the clearance. Heavy machinery was then brought in to demolish the encroaching structures, exposing the weathered brickwork and original arches of the Neela Gumbad complex for the first time in nearly half a century. The project goes beyond simply tearing down illegal shops. It represents a comprehensive attempt at placemaking. It reclaims public spaces for citizens while preserving historical identity. The vision for the site includes a multi-level subterranean parking facility designed to permanently solve the chronic traffic congestion along Mall Road and Anarkali. The space surrounding the shrine is being converted into an open-air public piazza with pedestrian walkways, seating, green spaces, and night lighting. This plan will allow sightings of the blue dome from the main road once again. To preserve the historic commercial identity without compromising the architecture, bicycle vendors are being provided organized spaces within new facilities nearby. Specialized conservationists are working to restore the crumbling brickwork, repair structural damage, and revive the signature blue tiles of the shrine’s dome. As heavy excavators continue clearing debris around the site, the historic silhouette of Neela Gumbad is once again visible. This ongoing revival project serves as a case for how South Asian megacities can reclaim their historic souls.
