High sugar diet may harm people with asthma

Eating too much sugar is widely known to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.  Now new research suggests that it may also make asthma symptoms worse. A study published in the journal Nutrients found that a high sugar diet can increase inflammation in the lungs making asthma attacks more likely in people with the condition.

The research was carried out on mice. Scientists gave the animals their normal food along with sweetened milk. Within just two weeks the mice showed higher levels of lung inflammation.

According to the researchers this is one of the first studies to show how quickly excess sugar can worsen inflammation linked to asthma.

Asthma is a long term disease that affects the airways and makes breathing difficult.  Although there is no cure the condition can be managed with proper treatment and healthy lifestyle choices.

During an asthma attack the airways become swollen and the muscles around them tighten. This can cause coughing wheezing chest tightness and shortness of breath making everyday activities harder.

The researchers said that when children eat too much sugar people usually worry about tooth decay or weight gain but rarely think about its possible effects on asthma.

They added that the findings support the idea of limiting sugar intake especially for people living with asthma.

According to the researchers too much sugar may affect the immune system and trigger inflammation which can make asthma symptoms more severe.

    A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that artificial intelligence (AI) experts and the general public have very different opinions about the future of AI. While experts are mostly positive about its impact many people are worried that AI could replace jobs and create new challenges. According to the survey, 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive effect on the United States over the next 20 years. In comparison, only 17% of the public share that view. Both experts and the public agree that healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring the greatest benefits. They believe AI could improve medical care and support better treatment. At the same time both groups are concerned that AI may not improve the accuracy of news or election coverage. The survey also found strong support for greater control over AI. Many respondents believe governments may struggle to regulate the technology effectively as it continues to develop. Another finding is the difference between male and female AI experts. Around 63% of male experts expect AI to have a positive impact on the United States compared with 36% of female experts. Women were generally more cautious saying the technology could have both benefits and risks. The report also notes that women remain underrepresented in the AI industry. Researchers suggest that increasing women’s participation in AI development could lead to more balanced technologies. They also point out that many jobs with a large number of female workers such as administrative and customer service roles are becoming more automated increasing the risk of job losses. Overall the report shows that understanding both expert opinions and public concerns is important. As AI continues to grow balancing its benefits with responsible rules and safeguards will be essential.

  • New breakthrough against superbugs

    Bacteria that cause infections are becoming harder to treat because many of them no longer respond to common antibiotics. These bacteria known as superbugs have developed resistance to medicines that once killed them easily.  As a result infections that were once simple to treat are becoming much more dangerous. Health experts say that every year thousands of people die from antibiotic resistant infections. This growing problem also makes surgeries cancer treatments and many hospital procedures riskier because patients are more likely to develop infections that are difficult to cure. Now scientists have made a promising discovery that could help solve this problem. Instead of creating entirely new antibiotics researchers have found a way to make existing antibiotics work again. The new approach uses special compounds called antibiotic adjuvants. These compounds do not kill bacteria on their own. Instead they help antibiotics become effective again by weakening the bacteria’s defenses. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in the United States discovered a compound called PGHI-4. When they combined it with the powerful antibiotic vancomycin it successfully killed bacteria that had already become resistant to vancomycin. Vancomycin is commonly used to treat serious bacterial infections including those caused by MRSA and Clostridioides difficile (C. diff.). Over time however some bacteria developed resistance to this important medicine making treatment much more difficult. During laboratory tests, scientists found that PGHI-4 blocks an important bacterial enzyme called SagA. Without this enzyme the bacteria’s protective cell wall becomes weaker allowing vancomycin to destroy the bacteria once again. The treatment was especially successful against drug resistant Enterococcus faecium a bacterium known for causing difficult hospital infections. Professor John Moses of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said the discovery was the result of years of chemistry research. He explained that the newly found compound blocks an enzyme that helps bacteria resist antibiotics opening the door to more effective treatments. The research team also used a modern chemical method called Diversity Oriented Clicking (DOC) to create a library of more than 150 chemical compounds. Scientists believe this technique could speed up the discovery of new medicines, not only for antibiotic resistant infections but also for diseases such as cancer. Experts say that if future studies confirm these results the same strategy could eventually help treat other dangerous drug resistant infections including tuberculosis (TB). Doctors also warn that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have made antibiotic resistance much worse. They advise people to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor and to always complete the full course of treatment. This helps reduce the chances of bacteria becoming resistant to medicines. Scientists say this research is an important reminder that many of the biggest medical breakthroughs begin in laboratories where new discoveries can lead to better treatments and save lives in the future.

In an increasingly interconnected world, disputes and tensions among nations have become more complex, involving geopolitical rivalries, ethnic and religious conflicts, ideological differences, civil unrest, and cyber warfare. These challenges threaten global peace and stability, and destroy the hustle and bustle of cities, turning them into ashes. These assaults lead to violence against innocent people . Amidst humanitarian crises and violence, diplomacy plays a crucial role in maintaining global peace, stability, and mutual prosperity among nations. Diplomacy is the most effective way to mediate disputes among nations through negotiations and table talks, preventing major conflicts and saving thousands of innocent lives. It is a manifestation of wisdom and dialogue. Modern conflicts are far more violent and complex than traditional wars. They arise from the struggle for power, competition over resources, territorial disputes, political instability, nationalism, separatism, and economic inequality. These conflicts have transformed cities into ruins, leaving streets littered with debris and countless lives lost. Millions of people have been displaced, deprived of education, healthcare, and shelter, and forced to live in extreme poverty. They have also left mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children waiting in vain for their loved ones who never returned from the battlefield. Now, let us turn our attention to the Israel–Palestine war. Since October 7, 2023, the conflict has continued for more than 1,000 days. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 73,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, while millions have been displaced and face severe humanitarian conditions. Similarly, the Russia–Ukraine war has continued for more than 1,600 days. The conflict has destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, and vital infrastructure, forcing millions to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries. History reminds us that when regional conflicts escalate into world wars, the world loses its path to peace. The First and Second World Wars claimed millions of lives and devastated entire nations. If diplomacy fails and violence prevails, humanity risks repeating the tragedies of the past. Therefore, dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful negotiation remain the only sustainable path. As modern conflicts continue to grow the importance of diplomacy cannot be overstated. Diplomacy provides nations with a peaceful means of resolving disputes through dialogue and compromise rather than violence. It prevents misunderstandings from escalating into armed conflicts and helps build trust and cooperation among nations. Strong diplomatic relations create a stable environment that encourages economic growth, attracts foreign investment, expands trade, and creates employment opportunities. Moreover, diplomacy facilitates humanitarian assistance, strengthens regional cooperation, and promotes lasting peace.In an increasingly interconnected world, it remains the most effective instrument for achieving peace, stability, and shared prosperity. History demonstrate that diplomacy repeatedly succeeded where military cops failed .The Camp David Accords (1978) ended decades of hostility between Egypt and Israel, proving that persistent dialogue can transform long-standing enemies into peace partners. Similarly, the Good Friday Agreement (1998) brought an end to years of violence in Northern Ireland through negotiation and political compromise. The Dayton Peace Agreement (1995) ended the devastating Bosnian War, while the Indus Waters Treaty (1960) between Pakistan and India has endured despite multiple wars, demonstrating that diplomatic agreements can survive even during periods of intense political tension. These examples illustrate that meaningful dialogue, mutual respect, and sustained negotiations often achieve what military force cannot. As former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan wisely observed, “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together.” In modern world conflicts strengthening diplomacy is essential for building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future. Governments should prioritize dialogue over confrontation, invest in skilled diplomacy, and promote mutual trust through regular communication. International organizations, regional alliances, and civil society also have an important role in facilitating peaceful negotiations and resolving disputes before they escalate into violence. At the same time, nations must uphold international law, respect sovereignty, and work together to address shared challenges such as climate change, terrorism and cyber threats. By embracing cooperation instead of conflict, diplomacy can prevent wars, protect human lives, and lay the foundation for lasting global peace and sustainable development. To conclude, diplomacy remains the cornerstone of peace and stability in an increasingly turbulent world. While modern conflicts have become more complex due to geopolitical rivalries, technological advancements, and transnational threats, dialogue and cooperation continue to offer the most effective path to lasting solutions. Military force may end battles, but only diplomacy can build enduring peace, restore trust, and promote mutual understanding among nations.     Writers are embracing flaws to fight AI prose

    In an era where generative artificial intelligence can generate essays in seconds, the digital world is quietly witnessing a linguistic backlash. Readers are increasingly attuned to the invisible fingerprint of large language models. Perfectly balanced sentences, predictable three-item lists, flawless grammar and fondness for the em dash. In response, a movement of novelists, journalists, essayists, and even corporate creators are opting an anti-AI literary counterculture. These writers are actively reintroducing human idiosyncrasies ranging from unorthodox metaphors to intentional typos to declare that a human is behind the keyboard. The hallmark of standard AI-generated text is not necessarily bad grammar. In fact, it is often too clean. Text-generation algorithms default to statistically probable phrasing. It’s resulting in a distinctively smooth, neutral tone that rarely takes stylistic risks. Over the past few years, certain visual and structural patterns have become clear red flags for readers. Excessive dependence on em dashes. Relying on clinical or dramatic transitions like “In conclusion,” “Delve,” or “Navigating the landscape of…” Prose that seems lacking the natural rhythm, pauses, and unpredictable detours of spontaneous speech. To break free from these algorithmic habits, authors are adopting techniques anchored in absolute negation. Novelist Laura Brooke Robson, author of Love Is an Algorithm, noted that she actively altered her sentence structures to avoid robotic cadence. Instead of relying on conventional metaphors, she intentionally sought out unexpected punctuation. For creators, avoiding the default traps of language models has surprisingly made their writing more original and lively. This counterculture goes beyond simply avoiding specific punctuation marks. Writers are cultivating a distinct aesthetic centered on authenticity, vulnerability, and friction. After years of detached or objective styles, creators are leaning back into intimate first-person storytelling. Specific personal experiences, odd sensory details, and messy real-life observations serve as proof of lived experience. They prove to be something synthetic text generators cannot genuinely claim. Minor human flaws, casual slang and even subtle typos are being viewed as authentic signatures. Some digital platforms and creators have even experimented with tools that preserve raw keystrokes to signal genuine human origin. Instead of smoothing out every transition, writers are introducing erratic pacing, quirky similes, and inventive vocabulary. Authors create an experience that keeps the reader engaged. Deliberately reassuring them that the text wasn’t produced by an automated model. Can Artificial Intelligence Just Copy It? Skeptics of this trend point out an obvious paradox! If large language models are capable of processing complex prompts, they can just as easily be instructed to “write with typos,” “use casual grammar,” or “tell a quirky story in the first person.” From a purely technical perspective, intentional mistakes does not make prose impossible for a machine to imitate. However, proponents of the movement emphasize that outsmarting algorithms was never the primary goal. Instead, the anti-AI counterculture is an artistic statement about human craft and intention. Writing is fundamentally an act of personal communication between two minds. When readers engage with text, they are seeking the author’s unique perspective, effort, and creative voice. Ultimately, this movement signals how society values written communication. As machine-generated text becomes ubiquitous, hyper-polished prose is losing its premium status. What readers increasingly crave is not frictionless perfection, but the warmth and oddity of a human voice.  

  • Parents stress linked to giving children smartphones

    Many parents give smartphones to their children and a major reason behind this behaviour has now been identified. Parents who experience stress tend to give their children devices to keep them occupied or calm while also being less likely to enforce limits on screen time. A study conducted by the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University included 822 parents raising children between the ages of 4 and 8. The participants provided information through online surveys about their children’s behavior, parental stress and screen-time habits. The findings showed that parents tend to allow their children to use smartphones for longer periods when their children’s behaviour becomes difficult to manage. Researchers said parents should not hesitate to seek support for managing their own stress. They also advised parents to set limits on children’s screen time and provide them with purposeful, age-appropriate content. They emphasized that parents should establish appropriate boundaries and spend quality time with their children to promote a healthy environment. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on children’s excessive smartphone use. A study published in January 2026 explored links between online content and problems related to children’s development. Similarly, research published in BMC Public Health in October 2024 found that spending excessive time in front of screens can have negative effects on mental health. The risk of depression, anxiety, irritability and other problems was particularly higher among children aged 9 and 10. The research found that the more time children spent in front of screens, the more severe their symptoms of depression tended to be. According to the study, activities such as video chatting, watching videos and playing video games were associated with a greater increase in this risk.

    During hot and humid weather even perfectly styled hair can become messy puffy and frizzy within minutes. While sweat and heat can play a role the main reason is actually what happens to the hair when it comes into contact with moisture in the air. Hair is mostly made of a protein called keratin. Its shape is partly maintained by weak hydrogen bonds. When the air becomes humid hair absorbs moisture which changes these bonds and can make your hairstyle lose its shape. Which hair types are most affected? Some types of hair are more sensitive to humidity than others. Curly porous and chemically treated hair can absorb more moisture making them more likely to become frizzy puffy or tangled. Frizzy hair does not always mean that your hair is dry. It can also be a sign that your hair is absorbing moisture from the surrounding air. How to reduce frizz A few simple hair care habits may help keep frizz under control. •Use a conditioner after washing your hair. •Avoid rubbing your hair roughly with a towel. •Gently squeeze out excess water and pat your hair dry. •Try a leave in conditioner for extra moisture. Use an anti frizz serum when needed. Choose hair products based on their ingredients rather than only their price or popularity. Tips. Humidity can change the way your hair behaves especially if you have curly porous or chemically treated hair. Using the right products and handling your hair gently can help keep it smoother and easier to manage in humid weather.
