PFA deals four food outlets on M-2, imposes Rs3.5m fines

GUJRANWALA: In one of the largest enforcement drives against food safety violations in recent months, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed four outlets of national food chains, imposed fines amounting to Rs3.5 million and destroyed more than one maund of substandard and prohibited food ingredients during a major crackdown at the M-2 Sukheki Motorway Service Area.

The operation was led by Special Assistant to the Punjab Chief Minister Salma Butt along with Punjab Food Authority Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmad. Five well-known food chains were inspected as part of the campaign aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety standards at one of the province’s busiest motorway service areas.

According to the Punjab Food Authority, inspection teams found multiple violations of food hygiene and safety regulations at the inspected outlets. Four national food chain outlets were sealed after authorities detected serious lapses that posed potential risks to public health.

Officials said inspection teams found freezers and washing areas in an unhygienic condition, with stagnant foul-smelling water and poor sanitation. Mandatory supply records, return logs and other essential documentation were either incomplete or unavailable.
Inspectors also reported widespread insect infestation, while food items and raw materials were found stored directly on the floor in violation of food safety protocols.

The authority further noted that bakery products at some outlets were being offered without manufacturing and expiry dates, making it difficult to verify their freshness and safety for consumers. Open drains, poor housekeeping and an overall unhygienic environment were also cited among the violations observed during the inspection.

Besides sealing the outlets, the Punjab Food Authority imposed cumulative fines of Rs3.5 million on the violators. More than one maund of substandard and prohibited food ingredients was confiscated and destroyed on the spot to prevent their use or sale.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Food Authority Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmad said the authority was pursuing a province-wide campaign to eliminate food adulteration and fraudulent practices from the food supply chain.

“Our teams are working to block every avenue of food adulteration and fraud across Punjab. Strict monitoring is being carried out from food production to its distribution, and there will be no compromise on quality,” he said.

He added that the authority was implementing a zero-tolerance policy against violators under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

“The sale and distribution of substandard or expired food products will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Enforcement operations will continue to ensure consumers receive safe and hygienic food,” he said.

The Punjab Food Authority has intensified inspections across the province in recent months as part of its ongoing efforts to improve food safety standards and strengthen regulatory enforcement at restaurants, bakeries, food chains and processing units.

Following the observation, the court discharged Altaf Ullah from the case. He was therefore released from the proceedings related to the allegations brought against him. The incident has drawn attention because of the apparent contradiction between the allegations in the police case and the physical condition of the accused. The case highlights the importance of verifying allegations and considering available evidence during legal proceedings. While police had accused the man of involvement in stone-pelting and wielding sticks, the court’s examination of his physical condition led to his discharge. The development came during hearings involving people arrested over the August 5 PTI-related protest in Islamabad. Authorities had registered cases against individuals accused of various activities during the demonstration. The court’s decision in Altaf Ullah’s case means that he has been discharged from the particular case presented before the magistrate. Mashal Yousafzai had accused Salman Akram Raja of involvement in what she described as the sale of party tickets. Raja rejected the allegation and responded sharply. Raja questioned the credibility of the accusation. He said those who could not afford even a small amount to pursue a legal case had resorted to making serious allegations against him. He also questioned Yousafzai’s knowledge of the circumstances surrounding her Senate position. Raja said she did not know who had played a role in getting her elected to the Senate. Raja further stated that decisions regarding Yousafzai had been made on the instructions of PTI founder Imran Khan. He said he did not possess the authority to remove Yousafzai from the Senate. He added that not taking action against her at the party level was an act of leniency on his part. Yousafzai rejected Raja’s claims and responded with allegations of her own. She claimed that Raja had apologised to Imran Khan on one occasion but later resumed making public statements against her and others. Yousafzai also challenged Raja to take action against her if he believed he had the authority to remove her from the party. The dispute has attracted attention because both figures hold prominent positions within PTI circles. Their public exchange has brought internal disagreements into the open at a time when the party is already facing political and organisational challenges. PTI worker Shandana Gulzar also joined the debate. Gulzar accused Raja of making an incorrect statement about financial matters. She questioned the handling of funds allegedly received from the United States. She asked where the millions of rupees allegedly coming from the US had gone.     Sindh announces new school timings

    The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has issued a revised schedule for government schools across the province, outlining new operating hours for primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions. According to an official notification, the updated timings will remain in effect from August until October 31, after which a separate winter schedule will be implemented from November 1 to March 31. Under the summer schedule, single-shift primary schools will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays, classes will end earlier, with schools remaining open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For secondary and higher secondary schools, the first shift will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until October 31. The department has also announced revised winter timings. From November 1 to March 31, single-shift primary schools will function from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while the first shift for secondary and higher secondary schools will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Schools operating in double shifts will also follow updated schedules. Until October 31, the  second shift will run from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. During the winter months, from November 1 to March 31, the second shift will begin at 12:45 p.m. and continue until 5:45 p.m. On Fridays, second-shift schools will operate from 10:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The revised timings aim to ensure a uniform academic schedule for government schools across Sindh while accommodating seasonal changes in daylight and weather conditions.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s inflation rate returned to single digits in July, offering some relief to consumers after remaining in double-digit territory for three consecutive months. In terms of district-wise performance, Muzaffar garh secured the first position, followed by Kot Addu in second, Layyah in third, Taunsa in fourth, Dera Ghazi Khan in fifth, and Rajan pur in sixth place.
