Pakistan set to field seven batters in first West Indies Test

TRINIDAD: Pakistan is set to adopt a batting-heavy approach for the opening Test against the West Indies, with team management reportedly planning to field seven specialist batters as they finalize the playing XI ahead of the series opener.

According to team sources, initial discussions have begun on the lineup, with the management aiming to strengthen the batting order while maintaining a balanced bowling attack for the first Test, which begins on Saturday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.

The proposed lineup is expected to include Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. All-rounder Salman Ali Agha is also likely to feature, with the team expected to use him as the fifth bowling option while adding depth to the batting unit.

Sources further indicated that Aamer Jamal and experienced pacer Mohammad Abbas are expected to retain their places in the side, providing balance with both bat and ball.

There is also a strong possibility that left-arm spinner Ali Usman will make his Test debut. One of Khurram Shahzad or Mohammad Ali is expected to complete the pace attack, depending on the final assessment of conditions.

Team management has reportedly advised the bowlers to focus on improving their batting contributions, reflecting Pakistan’s intention to maximize runs from the lower order. The final playing XI, however, will depend on players’ fitness and last-minute evaluations before the match.

Meanwhile, preparations at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy suggest conditions could favor seam bowlers. According to sources, curators have prepared a pitch with brown grass rather than lush green coverage, a surface expected to provide pace and bounce while remaining suitable for batting as the match progresses.

The first Test marks the beginning of Pakistan’s highly anticipated series against the West Indies, with both teams eager to make a strong start. Pakistan will be hoping that its strengthened batting lineup provides the platform for a winning performance in Caribbean conditions.

Ranbir Kapoor opens up about self-doubt ahead of Ramayana

Ranbir Kapoor has spoken with rare candour about the weight of playing Lord Rama in the most ambitious Indian film production in recent memory, admitting that when the role was first offered to him, his immediate response was fear rather than excitement. Speaking on a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday alongside co-star Yash, director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra, Kapoor was asked to reflect on what it meant to take on a role of this magnitude. His answer was unexpectedly personal. “I remember when the film was first offered to me, there was so much of fear, so much of doubt. Will I be able to do this, am I capable enough?” he said. “But I think that doubt changed into gratitude very early on. I think it was a blessing, an opportunity of a lifetime, and a moral responsibility.” What made the role feel so daunting, he explained, was not simply the scale of the film but the depth of the cultural and spiritual responsibility it carried. Lord Rama is not a fictional character for the hundreds of millions of people who hold him sacred. He is a living presence in the faith and moral imagination of a civilisation stretching back millennia. “The Ramayana is ingrained in our subconscious,” Kapoor said. “Lord Rama is the conscience keeper of millions of people around the world for generations, for more than 4,000 years. He is somebody who embodies the triumph of the human spirit in times of adversities. He stands for courage, compassion, forgiveness, righteousness, and just to have the opportunity to represent that is very daunting.” What helped him move through that initial paralysis, he said, was a shift in his approach from technical preparation to something more spiritual. “Very early on, I understood that it just requires a lot of faith, a lot of belief, a lot of truthfulness, and noble intentions. Our entire cast and crew had one noble intention, and that is to tell the story as authentically as we can.” His co-star Yash, who plays the antagonist Ravana, used his moment on the panel to defend Kapoor’s casting, praising both his humility and his dedication and noting that no actor can truly claim to embody a deity. He called Kapoor a fabulous actor who had worked hard for the role, pushing back on any lingering doubt about whether he was the right choice. The panel also brought an unexpected development. The Ramayana trailer, which had been scheduled for a global unveiling at Comic-Con, was postponed just hours before its planned launch. Producer Namit Malhotra confirmed the delay, saying the trailer would be released worldwide at a later date. He described the film as a moment of great pride for Indian cinema, one that would introduce the richness of Indian culture and storytelling to global audiences in the way major Hollywood productions do for their own traditions. Ramayana Part One is scheduled for a theatrical release in November.

  • Rahmat Shah appointed Afghanistan’s new test and ODI captain

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced a major leadership change by appointing experienced batter Rahmat Shah as the new captain of the national Test and One-Day International (ODI) teams. The decision follows the resignation of Hashmatullah Shahidi, who stepped down from the role after serving as Afghanistan’s captain for more than four years. Shahidi, 31, led Afghanistan in 55 ODI matches from January 2022 to June 2026. His final assignment as captain came in the ODI series against India. During his tenure, Afghanistan secured 27 victories and achieved several memorable wins against strong cricketing nations, including England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Under Shahidi’s leadership, Afghanistan impressed the cricketing world with their performances and narrowly missed out on a place in the tournament’s semi-finals. The Afghanistan Cricket Board thanked Shahidi for his commitment, professionalism, and contributions to the national team throughout his time as captain. The board also wished him success in the next chapter of his cricketing career, acknowledging the important role he played in the team’s progress on the international stage. Rahmat Shah, one of Afghanistan’s most dependable middle-order batters, will now take over the responsibility of leading the Test and ODI sides. Wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been appointed as the vice-captain, making him Rahmat’s deputy in both formats. Rahmat, 33, made his international debut in 2018 and has become one of Afghanistan’s most experienced players. So far, he has represented the country in 12 Test matches and 128 ODIs, scoring a combined 4,121 runs at an average of 35.22. Known for his calm approach and consistency with the bat, Rahmat has been an important figure in Afghanistan’s batting line-up for several years. Although this is his first appointment as the national captain, Rahmat is no stranger to leadership responsibilities. He has served as Afghanistan’s vice-captain in both Tests and ODIs since 2021, gaining valuable experience while working alongside Shahidi. Meanwhile, the newly appointed vice-captain, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 24, is regarded as one of Afghanistan’s brightest young stars. Despite his impressive performances with the bat, Gurbaz has yet to captain the national team at the international level. The latest appointment marks another significant step in Afghanistan’s leadership transition across all three formats of the game. Since Richard Pybus took over as the national team’s head coach following the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year, the board has made several changes to its leadership structure. Earlier in March, Ibrahim Zadran was named captain of the T20 International side, replacing Rashid Khan. Afghanistan’s next international assignment will be a five-match ODI series against Ireland in August 2026. The upcoming series will provide Rahmat Shah with his first opportunity to lead the national team as captain and begin a new era for Afghan cricket. Fans and cricket experts alike will be eager to see how the experienced batter performs in his new leadership role as Afghanistan continues its rise in international cricket.

Naqvi tells tycoons: Stop funding politicians

Federal Minister Mohsin Naqvi has called for sweeping structural reforms, warning that Pakistan cannot overcome its long-standing economic and governance challenges without fundamental changes to the country’s political and administrative systems. Speaking at the First Pakistan Investment Summit in Islamabad, Naqvi said the existing governance structure has become outdated and is no longer capable of meeting the country’s growing economic needs. He cautioned that without meaningful reforms, Pakistan could still be facing the same problems a decade from now. Addressing business leaders and investors, the minister said responsibility for the current state of affairs does not rest solely with politicians. He argued that the business community also plays a significant role in sustaining the existing system by financing political campaigns. Naqvi urged business leaders to stop funding political parties during elections and instead push for greater transparency, accountability and institutional reforms. He said reducing financial dependence on wealthy donors could help strengthen democratic institutions and improve governance. The minister also stressed the need to reduce Pakistan’s reliance on foreign loans. He said the country must focus on generating domestic resources, expanding investment and building a stronger economic foundation through long-term planning. Calling for national unity, Naqvi urged political parties to set aside differences and work together on a comprehensive reform agenda. He said lasting economic stability can only be achieved through collective decision-making and institutional improvements. Other speakers at the summit also highlighted the need for major administrative reforms. They argued that changes in governance structures, including decentralisation and stronger regional administration, could improve service delivery and reduce governance challenges. Business leader S.M. Tanvir said structural weaknesses continue to slow economic progress and called for fresh leadership and institutional reforms to strengthen the country’s administrative framework. Participants also expressed concern over Pakistan’s social and economic indicators. They noted that a large segment of the population continues to live below the poverty line, while unemployment remains a major challenge, particularly among young people. Several speakers said temporary welfare measures alone cannot address the country’s long-term economic issues. They called for policies that create sustainable employment opportunities, promote merit-based recruitment and equip young people with the skills needed to participate in the economy

After winning the toss and batting first, Pakistan Women posted a competitive total of 176 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The visitors produced an aggressive batting display, with key contributions from the top and middle order helping them set a challenging target of 177 runs. Despite the strong total, Sri Lanka Women responded confidently with an outstanding batting performance. The hosts maintained a steady scoring rate throughout the innings and successfully chased down the target in just 19 overs, losing only four wickets in the process. Sri Lanka’s batters dominated the chase with positive stroke play and well-built partnerships, keeping the required run rate under control from the outset. What Katie Holmes’ daughter really thinks of her…

Katie Holmes appears to be embracing a fresh chapter in her personal life, and according to recent reports, the person whose opinion matters most to her is fully supportive. The actress is reportedly dating New York-based artist Jason Bard Yarmosky, and sources claim that her daughter, Suri, is happy to see her mother enjoying life again after years of keeping her love life largely private.  Holmes and Yarmosky first sparked romance rumors after they were photographed together in New York before making additional public appearances in the Hamptons. Eyewitnesses described the pair as affectionate and comfortable in each other’s company, fueling speculation that the relationship is becoming more serious.  Despite the growing attention, Holmes is reportedly approaching the romance with caution. Sources close to the actress say she has learned from her past high-profile relationships and wants to let things develop naturally. Rather than rushing major milestones, she and Yarmosky are focusing on getting to know one another away from the spotlight.  Recent reports suggest that Suri has given her blessing to the relationship, encouraging her mother to embrace this new phase of life. However, other reports indicate that Holmes has not yet introduced Yarmosky to Suri, explaining that the romance is still in its early stages and that she prefers to keep family and dating separate until the relationship becomes more established. While these reports may seem contradictory, they collectively paint a picture of Holmes taking a thoughtful, measured approach to balancing motherhood and romance.  Now 20 years old, Suri is attending college and building her own future, giving Holmes more freedom to focus on herself. After dedicating years to raising her daughter following her 2012 divorce from Tom Cruise, the actress appears to be entering a new era where both mother and daughter are pursuing their own paths. Recent reports also note that Suri has legally adopted the surname “Noelle,” her mother’s middle name, reflecting another milestone in her independent life.  Yarmosky, a respected contemporary artist known for his work exploring themes of memory, aging, and family, is said to have a calming personality that Holmes appreciates. Insiders claim his grounded nature and creative outlook have helped the actress feel comfortable as she opens her heart again.  Although neither Holmes nor Yarmosky has publicly commented on the romance, fans are hopeful that this relationship brings happiness to the actress. With Suri reportedly supportive and Holmes choosing to move at her own pace, this new chapter appears to be built on trust, patience, and mutual respect.
