2,300 Israeli settlers storm Al-Aqsa

Around 2,300 Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Wednesday morning, according to Palestinian officials and international media reports.

Palestinian authorities described the mass entry as one of the largest such incursions this year. The incident took place as Jewish settlers marked Tisha B’Av, a religious day of mourning that commemorates the destruction of ancient Jewish temples, according to Jewish tradition.

The site holds deep religious significance for both Muslims and Jews. Muslims refer to it as the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, while Jews call the area the Temple Mount.

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also entered the compound under heavy police protection. His presence at the sensitive holy site has previously drawn strong criticism from Palestinians and sparked concerns over rising tensions in Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Governorate said the number of Israeli settlers entering the compound could increase further by sunset. Palestinian officials also reported that Israeli forces imposed tight security restrictions around the entrances to Al-Aqsa and across the Old City of Jerusalem.

Large numbers of Israeli security personnel deployed throughout the area, while Palestinian worshippers faced restrictions on accessing the mosque. According to the governorate, only a limited number of Palestinians managed to reach Al-Aqsa for the dawn prayer.

Palestinian officials further alleged that Israeli forces assaulted several worshippers and local residents during the heightened security measures.

The latest incident comes amid continued tensions surrounding access to and control of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, one of the most sensitive religious and political flashpoints in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Moroccan businessman’s death reignites Italy migration debate

BOLOGNA: The death of a Moroccan businessman during a police restraint in the Italian city of Bologna has reignited Europe’s heated debate over migration, policing and the treatment of immigrants, with the case exposing the deeply personal human stories often overshadowed by political rhetoric. The incident comes as European governments face mounting pressure over migration policies. Just days after thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced plans to suspend a free-movement agreement with Spain, reinforcing her government’s tough stance on immigration. Amid the political storm, the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan-born entrepreneur who had spent most of his life in Italy, has become a symbol of the broader tensions surrounding migration and law enforcement. Videos recorded by local residents on July 19 showed police officers restraining Fakir face down on the ground for several minutes after responding to reports of a distressed man behaving erratically in a residential area. The footage, which quickly spread across social media, sparked widespread public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct. Authorities said officers were responding to emergency calls about a man shouting, kicking garage doors and striking a vehicle. An autopsy and official investigations into the officers’ actions remain ongoing, while four Red Cross volunteers who were present are also under review. The tragedy triggered thousands of peaceful protesters to gather in Bologna, demanding accountability and justice for Fakir’s family. However, demonstrations later turned violent when a small group clashed with police, leaving dozens of officers injured and further intensifying political divisions. Friends, relatives and lawyers describe Fakir as far more than the image portrayed in political debates. Having arrived in Italy from Morocco at the age of six, he built a successful life, eventually owning a small metalworking company after years of hard work. Behind that success, however, he had been battling severe anxiety. According to his lawyer, Fakir feared deportation after complications involving his residency permit, despite living in Italy for nearly four decades. He had also been struggling financially as his business declined, forcing him to lay off several employees. Family members said he concealed his emotional pain, insisting everything was fine even as he sought psychiatric assistance weeks before his death. Sociologists argue that Fakir’s story highlights the dangers of reducing migration to political slogans while ignoring the human lives behind the headlines. As Italy awaits the outcome of official investigations, his family says they continue to trust the country’s justice system and hope the full truth surrounding his final moments will emerge.

Iran sets six conditions for reopening Strait of Hormuz

Iran has set six conditions for the United States to allow the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The demands were presented by Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. He warned that Tehran would not reopen the strategic waterway unless Washington changed its policy towards Iran. Zolghadr said the first condition was that the United States must not threaten Iran under any circumstances. He also said Washington must avoid any language or action that insults the dignity of the Iranian people. The second condition calls for a permanent end to what Iran describes as war and aggression against the country and its allies. These include Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen and Iraq. Iran’s third demand is the lifting of the naval blockade imposed on the country. Tehran has also called for the withdrawal of US forces from areas surrounding Iran. The fourth condition concerns compensation for damage caused to Iran during the war. Zolghadr said Iran must receive full compensation for the losses it suffered. The fifth demand is the removal of what Tehran considers unfair and illegal sanctions imposed on the Iranian people. Iran’s sixth condition calls for the unconditional release of Iranian assets that have been seized or frozen abroad. Tehran wants these assets returned to the Iranian people. The Strait of Hormuz is a key international shipping route. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. A disruption in the waterway could have major consequences for global energy supplies and international trade. Iran has repeatedly stressed the strategic importance of the strait. Any decision regarding its reopening could therefore have wider regional and international implications. Zolghadr also said Iran would maintain its position regardless of whether the situation develops into further conflict or diplomatic negotiations.

Iran shifts to offensive posture as Hormuz standof…

Iran has moved from a defensive to what a senior Iranian official called a fully offensive strategy, citing a deadlock in efforts to reach a lasting end to its war with the United States, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to a foreign news agency on Monday. Progress toward peace talks and the resumption of oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has stalled, with no indication that either side is moving closer to ending the conflict the United States and Israel launched on February 28. The official said Iranian entities must prepare to escalate tensions in the strait and across the wider region, adding that Tehran stands ready to make difficult decisions and would carry out a precise military strike to break the US naval blockade if diplomacy collapses. Washington did not immediately respond to those remarks, though President Donald Trump told Fox News earlier in the day that Iran should raise the white flag of surrender. Throughout the conflict, Trump has swung between threats of further escalation and claims that a peace deal sits within reach. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps pushed back hard on one such claim Monday, rejecting as false Trump’s assertion that Washington maintains backchannel contact with IRGC officials on matters related to the war. Spokesman Hossein Mohibbi told Iran’s Tasnim news agency that no talks are taking place between IRGC officials and American counterparts, describing Trump’s claims as fantasies stemming from desperation over battlefield setbacks. Mohibbi said diplomatic matters fall to other Iranian institutions and remain outside the Guard’s purview, adding that current information from the Foreign Ministry confirms no talks are underway even at that level. He argued Trump’s statements amount to an attempt to influence global energy prices. Trump had told reporters earlier Monday that his administration keeps a backchannel with the IRGC and speaks directly with its officials inside Iran. Trump also issued a separate warning aimed at Oman, saying Washington would respond with force if the sultanate interferes with US Iran negotiations. Asked about Oman’s role in talks touching on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, Trump told Fox News the United States would bomb Oman if it gets in the way. The comment came after Iran said Saturday that it had reached agreement with Oman on a shipping route map for the strait following weeks of technical talks. Trump separately confirmed the administration’s direct channel with the IRGC and repeated that Tehran should surrender, calling Iranian officials skilled negotiators who are nonetheless losing ground. Fighting also intensified elsewhere in the region. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed Monday that it struck several Saudi naval vessels along with a weapons depot in a broad missile and drone assault. Spokesman Yahya Saree said a Saudi amphibious transport ship and accompanying vessels were hit in a precise aerial attack involving multiple ballistic missiles, claiming several ships sank while others caught fire. He said Houthi forces also used multiple drones to strike a Saudi weapons depot at the Sahn al Jin camp in Yemen’s Marib province. Saudi authorities had not confirmed the claims as of publication. Separately, Yemen’s army said Monday it detected two hypersonic ballistic missiles fired by Houthi forces toward the city of Mocha and the Red Sea, launched from a former air defense brigade headquarters east of Taiz. No information on casualties or damage was immediately available, and the Houthis did not comment. The launch followed a claim from Yemen’s National Resistance Forces that Houthi fighters had targeted Mocha with seven drones a day earlier, adding to fears of renewed full scale conflict in a country that had seen relative calm since April 2022 following nearly twelve years of civil war. On the Iranian side, IRGC Deputy Commander in Chief Major General Mostafa Izadi said Iranian forces shot down more than 200 enemy aircraft during the recent war with the United States and Israel, according to Iran’s Fars news agency. Izadi said the conflict left the Islamic system undamaged and demonstrated Iran’s strength to the world. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf went further, declaring both a military and political victory over Washington and Israel on the day a 60 day ceasefire under the Islamabad memorandum was set to expire. Ghalibaf said the US and Israel failed to achieve any of nine publicly stated objectives in the war, calling it their biggest failure. Trump, meanwhile, reiterated on his Truth Social platform that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon in any form, describing this as Washington’s permanent top priority. Iran also pressed a separate grievance Monday, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei blaming pollution in Gulf waters on decades of US military presence and operations in the region. Baghaei said the environmental damage stems from American military activity over the past five decades and called for Washington to be held accountable, estimating losses in the trillions of dollars. His comments followed Iran’s request last week for compensation after an oil slick reached the island of Qeshm, which officials said has since been cleaned up. Separately, salvage efforts continued for a grounded tanker leaking Russian crude off Oman’s coast, with officials citing monsoon weather and the shallow, rocky seabed as major obstacles. Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rawahi of Oman’s transport ministry said the conditions expose salvage vessels to operational and navigational risks, compounded by flooding damage to one side of the tanker. Diplomatic efforts on Gaza also advanced Monday, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to meet Trump envoy Jared Kushner a day after a rare meeting between Kushner and Hamas officials in Cairo. A diplomatic source said Hamas leader Khalil Al Hayya attended some sessions with Kushner and Gaza peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov. Trump said in late July that a deal had been reached on the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups, though Netanyahu, facing an October re election vote, has publicly rejected the plan. Trump separately welcomed the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement by Turkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, saying on Truth

20,000 flee as fast-moving wildfire engulfs British Columbia

VANCOUVER: More than 20,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in British Columbia as a fast-moving wildfire tore through communities around Okanagan Lake, prompting provincial authorities to declare a state of emergency. The Bald Range wildfire exploded in size within hours, driven by hot, dry and windy conditions, sending residents scrambling for safety and creating an increasingly dangerous situation for firefighters and emergency crews. The blaze had expanded to roughly 9,500 hectares (23,500 acres) by Saturday, according to Reuters. Premier David Eby announced the state of emergency on Saturday as more than 100 wildfires were burning across the province. The emergency declaration gives authorities additional powers to restrict travel, coordinate resources and secure accommodation for people displaced by the fires. Thousands ordered to evacuate The communities of Summerland and Peachland were among those heavily affected. Summerland, home to around 12,000 people, was placed under an evacuation order, while thousands more residents in surrounding areas were also told to leave. Officials have warned that conditions remain extremely dangerous, with rapidly changing winds and intense flames making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage. A number of homes and other properties have already been destroyed, although authorities have yet to determine the total number of structures lost because some affected areas remain inaccessible. The wildfire has also disrupted essential services. Power outages have been reported, while Summerland issued a boil-water advisory after untreated water entered part of the system. Highway 97, an important transportation route through the region, was also closed as the fire threatened nearby communities. Residents rescued by helicopter The rapidly spreading flames left some residents trapped after escape routes became unsafe. Emergency crews used helicopters to reach people who could no longer evacuate by road, while search-and-rescue teams continued checking areas behind the fire lines for anyone who may have been left behind. The intensity of the fire has created exceptionally dangerous conditions. Officials said the blaze generated its own weather, including lightning, making firefighting operations even more challenging. Authorities are also investigating a possible wildfire-related death near Summerland. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said hazardous conditions were making it difficult to confirm details immediately. Why the situation is so severe British Columbia entered the 2026 wildfire season with significant concerns about drought and unusually warm conditions. The BC Wildfire Service had warned earlier this summer that much of the province could experience elevated wildfire activity because of persistent drought, below-average snowpack and warmer-than-normal temperatures. The Okanagan was among the areas facing above-average drought conditions. The District of Peachland had already raised its local fire danger rating to extreme in July, warning that dry forests and grasslands could allow any new fire to spread rapidly. A growing national wildfire crisis The emergency in British Columbia is part of a wider wildfire crisis affecting Canada this summer. Thousands of firefighters are battling blazes across multiple provinces, while smoke from major fires has repeatedly affected air quality and visibility. For residents forced from their homes, the immediate priority remains safety as emergency crews work to contain the Bald Range fire. With flames moving quickly and weather conditions remaining difficult, officials continue to urge residents in threatened areas to follow evacuation orders and avoid returning until authorities declare it safe. For British Columbia, the latest disaster is another stark reminder of how quickly a wildfire can transform from a remote blaze into a community-wide emergency.

China’s burger boom draws coffee chains and …

Burgers have become one of China’s most contested fast food categories, with budget minded diners and shrinking household sizes fueling a rush that now includes hotpot operators and coffee brands alongside established global chains. Yum China’s Pizza Hut Burger Bar concept, which places a dedicated burger counter inside existing Pizza Hut locations, expanded to more than 200 outlets within six months, the company said in July. Yum China plans to grow the format to between 500 and 600 outlets by the end of 2026, representing roughly 10 percent of its total Pizza Hut store network in China. The surge into burgers reflects broader changes in Chinese consumer habits. As households shrink and economic uncertainty keeps spending cautious, diners increasingly favor lower cost, portable meals that deliver convenience without sacrificing value. That shift has transformed burgers from a niche Western import long dominated by McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King into one of the most fiercely contested segments of China’s restaurant industry, drawing a wave of new entrants eager to capture market share. Last month, hotpot chain Haidilao entered the space with a new concept called Huanxianbao, or Fresh Burger, which sells burgers alongside pizza, pasta and fried chicken. Coffee chain M Stand has also opened burger focused locations in several cities. China’s Western style fast food market was valued at 499.65 billion yuan, or about $74.1 billion, in 2025 and is projected to reach 587.09 billion yuan by 2027, according to data provider iiMedia Research, even as several global brands face broader challenges in the market. Burgers ranked as the top preference among consumers surveyed, with 55 percent selecting the category. While still a relatively small slice of China’s overall fast food industry, the burger segment alone was worth $18.4 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow 8.7 percent annually through 2035, according to Emergen Research. Part of the category’s appeal lies in simple economics. Food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng said burgers offer a lower cost alternative to full service restaurant meals while still functioning as a substantial meal, calling them a strong value for money option amid cautious consumer spending. Wang Fang, a university student in Beijing, said burgers have become a default lunch choice for her and her classmates because they cost less than ordering several dishes at a sit down restaurant. She said a burger loaded with meat, vegetables and butter makes for an affordable, balanced meal. The category’s rise also tracks with shifting demographics. Growing numbers of single person households, smaller families and young urban professionals have driven demand for convenient meals sized for one, a trend Yum China says is opening opportunities across its brand portfolio. Pizza Hut added burgers to its menu in 2024, and by 2025 the category accounted for a mid single digit percentage of Pizza Hut’s total sales in China, the company said. Yum China expects burgers to generate more than 1 billion yuan in sales this year, representing 5 to 6 percent of the brand’s revenue. The company said burgers resonate strongly with takeaway and delivery customers in China, where 43 percent of consumers order delivery at least once a week, compared with a global average of 23 percent, according to Euromonitor. The growing appetite for burgers has drawn competitors from across the industry. Domestic chains such as Tasiting now compete directly with McDonald’s, Yum China’s KFC and Shake Shack for market share. International brands are eager to join the competition as well. When US chain Five Guys opened its first stores in Beijing this month, customers waited more than two hours to be served. Wendy’s said in May that it plans to enter the Chinese market and open as many as 1,000 franchised restaurants over the next decade. Liu Tao, a 48 year old musician in Beijing, regularly takes his 11 year old son to McDonald’s on Sundays, fitting the meal into a tight schedule between the boy’s math and English classes. He said burgers work well when time is short and he needs food that feels clean, quick and won’t bore his son, noting that his son often eats in the car on the way to his next class.
