Islamabad: Mobile phone users across Pakistan will now have to pay higher charges for various call and internet packages as telecom companies have increased their tariffs after approval from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The PTA has released updated details of the top 15 hybrid and data only mobile bundles offered by major telecom operators, including Jazz, Zong, Telenor and Ufone. The revised tariff sheets show price increases in several monthly, weekly and short term packages, with some bundles witnessing an increase of up to 33 percent.

According to the PTA data, monthly call and data packages have seen increases of up to Rs500, while 15 day packages have become costlier by up to Rs300. Weekly hybrid bundles have recorded increases of up to Rs130, whereas three day, two day and one day packages have also witnessed price hikes.

The PTA said that it has updated its consumer awareness section to provide customers with complete information about mobile tariffs. The authority has published new tariff sheets containing existing package prices, revised charges, validity periods and available facilities.

According to PTA, the purpose of releasing the updated information is to help consumers compare different mobile operators and select packages according to their needs.

The telecom regulator further stated that transparency in the telecom sector and protection of consumer interests remain among its top priorities.

The increase in mobile package prices comes at a time when millions of Pakistanis depend on mobile internet services for education, business, online payments and daily communication, making the revised tariffs a major concern for regular users.

PSX sheds 280 points amid cautious trading

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained under pressure during Tuesday’s trading session as investors adopted a cautious approach. The benchmark KSE-100 Index opened on a weak note and stayed in negative territory during the first half of the session. By 1pm, the index had dropped 279.65 points, or 0.16%, to 177,982.68 points. It had closed at 178,262.33 points in the previous session. The market witnessed further pressure shortly after opening. At around 9:39am, the KSE-100 fell to 177,914.38 points, losing 347.95 points, or 0.20%. The index later recovered some of its early losses but remained below the previous close. Trading remained volatile during the session. The index reached an intraday high of 179,123 points and a low of 177,903.87 points. Despite the decline in the benchmark index, market activity remained relatively strong. Around 339.48 million shares were traded during the session. The total value of shares traded stood at approximately Rs19.71 billion. Investor sentiment remained subdued as market participants appeared cautious about taking fresh positions. Profit-taking also contributed to the pressure on the benchmark index. The partial recovery from the morning low indicated some buying interest at lower levels. However, it was not enough to push the index back into positive territory by midday. Investors continued to monitor market developments and broader economic indicators for direction. The afternoon session was expected to determine whether the index could recover its losses or close the day in negative territory.

India denies role in Sheikh Hasina’s planned vir…

NEW DELHI: India has firmly denied any government involvement in a virtual address that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to deliver to mark two years since the political uprising that forced her from office. The clarification came after reports suggested that the online event, scheduled to be held in New Delhi, had official backing. India’s Ministry of External Affairs rejected those claims, insisting the government has no connection with the programme. Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the event was being organised by a private media organisation and not by the Indian government. “The Government of India has no role in organising this event,” Jaiswal said. He added that New Delhi neither endorses nor supports the views that may be expressed during the programme. The statement comes amid heightened political sensitivity surrounding Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in self-imposed exile in India since her government was toppled following student-led protests in 2024. According to media reports, the 78-year-old former premier is expected to make her first public appearance since leaving Bangladesh, addressing supporters and viewers via video link from New Delhi. The event is being hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, is also expected to participate alongside other speakers. Meanwhile, authorities in Dhaka have reportedly instructed local media outlets not to broadcast or provide live coverage of Hasina’s virtual speech. The move reflects the continuing political tensions surrounding the former prime minister and her Awami League. Sheikh Hasina remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in Bangladesh’s recent political history. After losing power, she was convicted in 2025 on charges of crimes against humanity linked to a crackdown on anti-government protesters. A court sentenced her to death, a verdict she has rejected as politically motivated and legally invalid. Her planned address is expected to draw significant attention across South Asia, with supporters viewing it as a symbolic return to the political spotlight, while critics see it as another chapter in Bangladesh’s ongoing political divide. India’s latest statement appears aimed at distancing itself from any perception of official involvement, as New Delhi seeks to avoid diplomatic friction with Dhaka while continuing to host the former Bangladeshi leader. With regional attention focused on the event, Sheikh Hasina’s speech is likely to reignite debate over Bangladesh’s political future and her possible role in it.

Transgender protest turns violent in Karachi

Police have arrested three transgender persons after registering a case over an alleged attack on the Boat Basin police station in Karachi. The case was lodged by the state following an incident that took place a few days ago. According to police officials, a large group of transgender persons allegedly entered the police station in an agitated state and created unrest inside the premises. They are accused of pelting stones, damaging government property and disrupting official work. Police said the protesters allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked at the police station. They also damaged the glass panels of a police mobile and vandalized equipment linked to the Safe City surveillance system. Authorities said the doors of the Safe City monitoring room were also broken during the incident. Officials stated that police personnel tried to calm the protesters and asked them to remain peaceful. However, they claimed that the group continued its protest and refused to leave the premises. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the protesters also allegedly assaulted members of the public who were present at the police station despite repeated warnings from police officers. Eight transgender persons have been nominated in the case, while investigations are continuing to identify and arrest the remaining suspects. Police said the protest erupted after officials detained several beggars under the Beggary Act on the instructions of the assistant commissioner. During the operation, one transgender person reportedly suffered a nosebleed while being taken into custody. According to police, the injury occurred during the detention process. They alleged that the protesters later presented the incident as a case of police torture, which triggered the protest outside and inside the police station. Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events. Police are also reviewing available evidence, including surveillance footage, to identify everyone involved in the alleged vandalism and attacks on government property.
