Filmmaker Karan Johar marked Friendship Day with an emotional message, reflecting on the friendships that shaped his life and helped him overcome childhood loneliness, self-doubt, and personal challenges. Sharing a heartfelt note on social media, Karan looked back on his early years as an only child, admitting that he often felt isolated while watching other children play together. He recalled spending much of his childhood in his own world and wondering why making friends seemed so difficult. The director revealed that, as a seven-year-old, he struggled to connect with others and frequently questioned why he did not have close companions. Those feelings of loneliness, he said, remained with him until one special friendship changed his outlook on life. Karan credited his childhood friend, Farzana Muncherjee, for helping him step out of his comfort zone and become more confident. He described her as someone who encouraged him to leave behind his fears and insecurities and embrace life with greater openness. Reflecting on her influence, he shared that she made him realize he had been overly dramatic and that all he really needed was to step outside his room and create a place for himself in the world. According to Karan, her friendship became a turning point in helping him develop self-confidence and build meaningful relationships. More than four decades later, Farzana continues to hold a special place in his life. Karan said their bond has remained strong over the years and that she is still an important part of his heart. The filmmaker also reminisced about his friendship with Apoorva Mehta, now the CEO of Dharma Productions. He recalled being shifted to a new classroom during his school days, where he knew no one and once again felt alone. That changed when Apoorva approached him and offered his friendship. Karan humorously remembered that his new friend had only one request — to bring vegetarian snacks from the following day. What began as a simple school friendship eventually grew into a lifelong personal and professional relationship. Looking back, Karan said these friendships taught him valuable lessons about self-acceptance. They helped him overcome his insecurities and understand that embracing his true self made it easier for others to accept him as well. He explained that learning to move beyond his personal complexes transformed the way he viewed himself and the people around him. Those experiences, he said, played a key role in shaping his confidence and outlook on life. Karan also opened up about a recent emotional chapter involving his mother, Hiroo Johar. He revealed that she had spent 15 days in the intensive care unit before returning home, where she is now recovering well. The difficult period reinforced the importance of genuine friendships, he said. During challenging moments, he realized that while success and wealth have their place, lasting relationships are life’s greatest investment. According to him, true friends provide unwavering support when it matters most. Concluding his message, Karan expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people who have stood by him throughout his life.
