Harry and Meghan’s UK security plan revealed

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has declined to give details about security arrangements for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as the couple prepare to return to the United Kingdom.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to West Yorkshire, Burnham was asked about the Sussexes’ security situation following reports that they plan to relocate to Britain later this month.

The prime minister described the matter as private and said the couple’s plans were their own concern. He wished Harry and Meghan well as they prepare for their move.

The comments come after reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning to establish a private home in Britain with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The family is expected to remain in a private, non-royal residence rather than move into a royal property.

The reported relocation would mark a significant change for the family, which moved to the United States after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

Archie and Lilibet are expected to begin attending school in Britain in September. Their school arrangements have reportedly already been made, although details about the institution and the family’s new address have not been publicly disclosed.

Security has remained a sensitive issue for Harry since his loss of automatic publicly funded police protection following his decision to step back as a working royal.

The prince has previously challenged the arrangements, arguing that security concerns affect his ability to bring his family to Britain safely. The issue became particularly prominent during plans for family visits earlier this year.

The latest move, however, suggests that Harry and Meghan are prepared to spend a much longer period in Britain despite the unresolved public debate over their security arrangements.

The couple are not currently expected to resume official working roles within the Royal Family. Their return is instead being described as a move to establish a British base while maintaining their private lives and existing links to the United States.

Harry’s relationship with members of the Royal Family has remained complicated, although recent developments have indicated some easing of tensions. King Charles has reportedly been informed about the family’s plans.

For now, the government has offered little public detail about whether Harry, Meghan and their children will receive any special security support after relocating.

Death toll from Gansu landslides climbs as heavy rain batters parts of China

The death toll from flash floods and landslides in China’s northwestern Gansu Province has risen to 25 as rescue teams continue recovery efforts while heavy rainfall threatens more areas across the country. According to Chinese state media, the disaster struck Weiyuan County in Dingxi City after torrential rain triggered floods and landslides on July 26. Earlier reports had confirmed 10 deaths, but updated figures released on Sunday showed that at least 25 people have now lost their lives while another 23 were injured. Rescue workers remain active in the affected areas as authorities assess the full extent of the damage. China’s National Commission for Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief has instructed Gansu provincial authorities to carry out detailed investigations and damage assessments following the deadly disaster. Officials are also working to identify areas at risk of further landslides as persistent rainfall continues during the country’s annual flood season. Local authorities in Gansu have warned residents to remain alert because unstable hillsides and saturated ground could trigger additional landslides, particularly around Dingxi and nearby districts. Emergency services have been placed on standby to respond quickly if weather conditions worsen. The severe weather has not been limited to Gansu. China’s national weather agency issued fresh warnings on Sunday for several regions, including Beijing and Inner Mongolia, where heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected. Forecasters said a broad stretch of the country from the southwest to the northeast could experience dangerous weather over the coming days. Sichuan Province has also been hit hard by continuous rainfall. State broadcaster CCTV reported that more than 64,000 people have been evacuated from high risk areas, while over 881,000 residents have been relocated since the beginning of this year’s flood season. Local governments are continuing emergency operations to protect communities vulnerable to flooding and landslides. Weather officials have also warned of another potential threat developing in the western Pacific. Super Typhoon Dolphin is moving towards East Asia and is expected to begin affecting China’s southeastern coastal regions from Wednesday. Authorities are closely monitoring its path and preparing emergency response measures in case the storm brings strong winds and heavy rainfall to coastal provinces. China experiences frequent flooding during the summer monsoon season, with mountainous regions particularly vulnerable to landslides caused by prolonged rainfall. In recent years, extreme weather events have become more common, prompting authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve emergency response systems to reduce the impact on local communities. As rescue and recovery efforts continue in Gansu, officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to follow weather updates and evacuation orders to minimise the risk of further casualties as heavy rain continues across large parts of the country.

Imran Ashraf breaks silence on AI death hoax

Pakistani actor Imran Ashraf has reassured his fans that he is alive and in good health after fake, AI-generated videos claiming that he had died began circulating on social media. Ashraf addressed the rumours through an Instagram story, making it clear that reports of his death were completely false. He said he was “absolutely fine” and remained alive, while also asking his followers to remember him in their prayers. The clarification came after several manipulated videos appeared online showing seemingly authentic clips of journalists and celebrities announcing that the actor had died. The fabricated reports reportedly claimed that Ashraf had suffered a heart attack. One TikTok account shared multiple AI-generated videos featuring digitally recreated versions of well-known personalities, including actor Bilal Abbas, former cricketer Shahid Afridi and journalist Mansoor Ali Khan. Another fabricated video even appeared to depict a funeral for the popular television host and actor. The incident has once again highlighted the growing problem of artificial intelligence being used to create convincing but completely false celebrity news. Such videos can quickly spread across social media before users have an opportunity to verify their authenticity. Ashraf is also not the first Pakistani celebrity to become the target of false death reports. Singer Tahira Syed faced a similar situation in June when rumours of her death circulated online. She later posted a video confirming that she was alive and well and urged people to verify information before sharing it. Actor Tauseeq Haider also became the subject of AI-generated misinformation when fabricated images circulated claiming that he had married actor Farah Saadia. The two actors jointly rejected the claim and humorously said they were still happily single, while asking the creators to send them wedding gifts if they were going to continue the story. The spread of such fabricated content has raised concerns about the misuse of AI tools to imitate real people and create misleading narratives. With digitally generated videos becoming increasingly realistic, celebrities and public figures are facing greater difficulty in controlling false information about themselves.

New petrol and diesel prices announced for August …

The federal government has announced a slight reduction in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, issuing a fresh notification through the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division). The revised fuel prices will come into effect from August 1, 2026, and will remain applicable until August 3, 2026. According to the official notification, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) determined the new petroleum product prices under the pricing mechanism approved by the federal government. The latest revision provides modest relief to consumers amid fluctuating international oil prices. Under the new rates, the price of petrol has been reduced by 12 paisa per litre, bringing the new price to Rs. 336.03 per litre. Previously, petrol was being sold at Rs. 336.15 per litre. Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been cut by 66 paisa per litre. The revised price has been set at Rs. 392.38 per litre, compared with the previous rate of Rs. 393.04 per litre. Although the reductions are relatively small, they reflect the government’s periodic review of petroleum prices based on recommendations from OGRA and prevailing market conditions. Fuel prices in Pakistan are reviewed regularly, taking into account changes in international crude oil prices, exchange rate fluctuations, and applicable taxes and levies. Petrol is widely used by private vehicles, motorcycles, and small transport operators, while high-speed diesel is the primary fuel for heavy transport, agriculture, and industrial machinery. Any change in fuel prices can have a direct impact on transportation costs, inflation, and the prices of essential goods. The Ministry of Energy stated that the revised prices have been implemented in accordance with the government’s petroleum pricing policy. Consumers across the country will pay the new rates at fuel stations from August 1. The latest price adjustment comes as authorities continue to monitor global energy markets and domestic economic conditions. Future revisions will depend on international oil price trends, currency movements, and recommendations made by OGRA under the government’s approved pricing mechanism.

Preity Zinta backs CJP protest and urges government dialogue

Actor Preity Zinta has publicly voiced her support for students demonstrating under the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) banner, urging the Indian government to initiate “meaningful dialogue” with student bodies and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to resolve the ongoing crisis surrounding competitive exam paper leaks. Taking to social media, Zinta expressed deep concern over the health of Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding accountability and comprehensive educational reforms following widespread irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. Urging the activist to prioritize his well-being, the actor appealed for an immediate end to his fast while affirming her solidarity with the youth movement: ”I hope our govt starts a meaningful dialogue with Sonam Wangchuk and the student bodies so his health does not deteriorate any further! Please end your fast Sonam. Your health is as important as this fight. You and the students are fighting for the future of India and for our youth. My heartfelt & unwavering support to every student & to Sonam in this fight to uplift & upgrade our educational system.” The CJP-led demonstrations at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar escalated dramatically following a police crackdown and lathi-charge on peaceful student marchers, triggering widespread outrage across civil society and the entertainment fraternity. Addressing the growing unrest, Zinta issued a follow-up statement stressing the need to protect the genuine intent of the movement while cautioning against violence or political exploitation. She emphasized that while demanding reforms and holding authorities accountable is essential for the nation’s future, peaceful protests must remain focused on their core objective and avoid being manipulated by disruptive elements. Reaffirming her faith in democratic institutions, law, and order, she appealed to both authorities and student representatives to enter into constructive discussions to restore stability and secure better educational standards for the nation’s youth. Zinta’s intervention joins a swell of public support from prominent cultural figures—including veteran actors Shabana Azmi and Prakash Raj, actor Imran Khan, and singer Diljit Dosanjh—who have collectively called on leadership to engage constructively with the country’s students rather than resorting to force. With public pressure mounting and health concerns for key activists intensifying, calls for immediate government dialogue have moved to the forefront of the national debate.
