Gold prices surge by Rs13,700 per tola in Pakistan

Gold prices in Pakistan surged sharply on Thursday, rising by Rs13,700 per tola as international bullion prices recorded a strong increase.

According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), the price of gold increased to Rs471,936 per tola, compared with Rs458,236 recorded on the previous day.

The price of 10 grams of gold also climbed significantly, increasing by Rs11,746 to Rs404,609.

The sharp increase in local gold prices came alongside a major rally in the international bullion market. International gold prices rose by $137 per ounce to $4,495, providing strong upward momentum to domestic prices.

The latest increase follows significant fluctuations in Pakistan’s gold market over the past several trading sessions. On Wednesday, local gold prices had declined by Rs3,700 per tola despite a strong rise in international prices. The rate had fallen to Rs458,236 per tola, while 10 grams of gold were priced at Rs392,863.

On Tuesday, gold prices remained unchanged at Rs461,936 per tola. Earlier on Monday, the precious metal had gained Rs2,000 per tola, reaching Rs461,936.

The latest movement highlights the volatility currently being witnessed in the precious metals market. International bullion prices remain a key factor influencing gold rates in Pakistan, while local prices can also be affected by currency movements and domestic market conditions.

Silver prices also recorded a substantial increase on Thursday. According to APGJSA figures, the price of silver rose by Rs317 per tola to Rs7,169. The price of 10 grams of silver also increased by Rs317 to Rs6,146.

The sharp rise in gold prices is likely to attract renewed attention from investors, jewelers and consumers who closely monitor precious metal rates. Gold is often considered a store of value, making significant price movements particularly important for investors and households.

With international gold prices reaching $4,495 per ounce and the local rate crossing Rs470,000 per tola, market participants will be closely watching the next trading sessions for signs of whether the rally will continue or prices will experience another correction.

    Karachi roads blocked as JI protests fuel levy

    Traffic was disrupted across several major parts of Karachi on Friday as Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) workers staged sit-ins against the federal petroleum levy. The protests were part of a nationwide campaign announced by the party. JI had said it would hold demonstrations at hundreds of locations across the country by blocking major roads. The traffic police advised citizens to avoid the protest-hit areas where possible and use alternative routes. Commuters were also asked to allow additional time for their journeys. According to updates shared by JI Karachi, protesters blocked the road connecting Sharea Faisal with Natha Khan. The Super Highway and Hub River Road were also affected. Another road connecting the Sharea Faisal Nursery Bus Stop with the airport was reportedly blocked as protesters gathered at the designated locations. The demonstrations prompted criticism from the Sindh government. Provincial government spokesperson Sadia Javed said the petroleum levy was a federal issue and questioned why Karachi’s residents were facing difficulties because of the protest. She accused the JI of using the demonstrations for political gains instead of addressing public issues through relevant constitutional forums. Javed said road blockades were affecting the daily lives of millions of Karachi residents and raised concerns about the movement of ambulances and patients during the disruptions. She urged the party to raise its objections in Parliament and other relevant forums rather than blocking roads. The government spokesperson also warned protesters against damaging public property or taking the law into their own hands. The demonstrations were not limited to Karachi. JI workers also gathered in Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta and Peshawar as part of the nationwide campaign. In Islamabad, protesters reportedly blocked Srinagar Highway near Golra Mor while attempting to march towards Chungi 26. Several locations across Sindh also witnessed demonstrations, including Thatta, Matiari, Tando Allahyar and Shikarpur.

    Banks, SBP and PSX to remain closed for three days

    Banks and other financial institutions across Pakistan will observe a three-day closure from August 14 to August 16 in connection with Independence Day and the regular weekend holidays. According to a circular issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the central bank, commercial banks, financial institutions and the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) will remain closed on Friday, August 14, which has been declared a public holiday on account of Independence Day. The closure will be followed by the regular weekend holidays on Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, respectively. As a result, banking and stock market activities will remain suspended for three consecutive days. The holiday schedule is expected to affect routine banking operations, including branch-based customer services and other in-person transactions. Customers who need to visit bank branches or carry out services that require physical processing have been advised to plan their transactions accordingly. However, the closure will not affect digital banking facilities. The SBP said automated teller machines (ATMs), internet banking and other online banking services will continue to operate during the holidays. Customers will therefore be able to access cash through ATMs and use digital channels for eligible transactions throughout the three-day break. Regular banking and financial market operations are expected to resume on Monday, August 17, when banks, financial institutions and the stock market reopen after the Independence Day holiday and weekend.

    Punjab shifts Journalists’ Colony Phase-II to Charbagh

    Lahore: In a significant move to provide residential facilities to the journalist community, the Government of Punjab has decided to relocate Journalists’ Colony Phase-II from Katar Band Road to J Block of the Charbagh Scheme. The project will be developed in accordance with the previously approved master plan. A high-level meeting was held at the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA), jointly chaired by RUDA Chief Executive Officer Imran Amin and Secretary Information Punjab Tahir Raza Hamdani. The meeting reviewed the relocation of Journalists’ Colony Phase-II, the progress made so far, and the future roadmap to ensure the timely completion of the project. The meeting was attended by Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari, General Secretary Afzal Talib, Punjab Journalists Housing Foundation (PJHF) Deputy Managing Director Adnan Rashid, Assistant Director (Administration) Asad Hussain, RUDA Director Public Relations Colonel Abid Latif, and other senior officials. It was decided that, in order to expedite the project, the Punjab Journalists Housing Foundation would immediately provide RUDA with the list of eligible journalists for Phase-II plots. Upon receipt of the list, RUDA will issue formal allotment/intimation letters to the eligible applicants so that the remaining stages of the project can proceed without delay. The meeting further decided that the Charbagh Scheme (J Block) project will be implemented under the previously approved master plan. Advance payments and installment schedules will remain unchanged and will be collected in accordance with the original agreement. Development charges will be collected directly by RUDA, while all the rules and regulations applicable to Journalists’ Colony Phase-II will continue to apply to the eligible allottees. Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Information Punjab Tahir Raza Hamdani thanked RUDA CEO Imran Amin and appreciated his efforts in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to provide housing facilities to journalists. He expressed confidence that RUDA would complete the development work, hand over possession of the plots, and finalize all remaining stages of the project within the stipulated timeframe, enabling journalists to construct their homes. Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari thanked Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Provincial Minister for Information Azma Bukhari, Secretary Information Tahir Raza Hamdani, and RUDA CEO Imran Amin for their commitment to fulfilling the government’s promise to the journalist community. He said that the relocation of Journalists’ Colony Phase-II to the prime location of Charbagh reflects the Punjab Government’s dedication to the welfare of journalists. He added that the entire journalist community appreciates this initiative and congratulated all eligible journalists included in Phase-II.
