Six Pakistani dramas that gave women powerful stories

Pakistani television has produced many memorable female characters. Some of them stood out because they were not written simply as victims waiting to be rescued.

Over the decades, several dramas showed women working, making difficult choices, facing social pressures and rebuilding their lives. These characters were ambitious, emotional and flawed. Most importantly, they were allowed to shape their own stories.

Here are six dramas that created some of Pakistani television’s most memorable female leads.

Ankahi (1982)

Written by Haseena Moin, Ankahi introduced audiences to Sana Murad, played by Shehnaz Sheikh.

Sana is confident, outspoken and determined. After her father’s death creates financial problems for the family, she decides to take responsibility.

Despite having limited qualifications, she manages to secure a job after an unexpected meeting with a company chairman. Her journey through professional life becomes a mix of humour, challenges and personal growth.

Sana’s character was significant because she was not defined by marriage or romance. She wanted to work and create a future for herself.

Tanhaiyaan (1985)

Haseena Moin’s Tanhaiyaan, directed by Shahzad Khalil, focused on two sisters who suddenly lose their parents and their family home.

Played by Marina Khan and Shehnaz Sheikh, the sisters are forced to rebuild their lives independently.

The drama presented women earning their own income without treating their decision to work as something unusual. Their struggles were balanced with friendship, humour and everyday challenges.

That combination helped the drama remain popular long after its original broadcast.

Maat (2011)

Umera Ahmad’s Maat followed two sisters whose different priorities eventually take them in completely different directions.

Saba Qamar played Saman, a woman strongly attracted to wealth, comfort and social status. Her sister Aiman, played by Aamina Sheikh, takes a quieter path.

Aiman is repeatedly underestimated and overlooked. She faces difficult circumstances but continues building her life with patience and resilience.

As the story progresses, the sisters’ fortunes change dramatically. The drama explores how ambition, relationships and personal choices can shape a person’s future.

Durr-e-Shehwar (2012)

Durr-e-Shehwar explored marriage from a perspective that was rarely shown without romanticising sacrifice.

The central character enters marriage expecting affection and companionship. Instead, she faces emotional distance from her husband and hostility from her mother-in-law.

The story is later viewed through the eyes of her daughter, Shandana. She initially believes her parents had a perfect marriage.

She eventually discovers the struggles her mother endured.

The drama raises questions about compromise, expectations and the sacrifices women make to preserve relationships.

Digest Writer (2014)

Saba Qamar played Fareeda, a young woman whose ambitions are often overshadowed by the expectations placed on her family’s son.

Writing becomes Fareeda’s escape and her way of expressing herself. She begins publishing stories under the name Rashk-e-Hina.

Her talent eventually attracts the attention of a television producer, giving her an opportunity to enter the drama industry.

However, success does not come easily. Fareeda faces professional rivalry, betrayal and pressure from her family.

The drama presents ambition as something meaningful while also showing the personal cost of pursuing a career in a difficult environment.

Udaari (2016)

Udaari tackled one of the most sensitive subjects in Pakistani television.

The story follows Zebo, whose childhood is shattered by abuse. However, the drama does not define her entire identity through her trauma.

Instead, Zebo gradually finds the courage to speak about what happened to her.

Her mother also undergoes a major transformation. After realising the danger her daughter faces, she chooses to protect Zebo and rebuild their lives.

Meera, a singer living nearby, also becomes an important source of support.

One of the drama’s most powerful moments comes when Zebo confronts her abuser in court. Rather than accepting shame for what happened to her, she identifies herself as a survivor.

Across four decades, these dramas demonstrate how Pakistani television has portrayed women in changing ways.

From Sana’s determination to build a career to Zebo’s courage to seek justice, these characters were given stories beyond romance and victimhood.

Diddy’s prison release date moved forward again …

Sean “Diddy” Combs is now expected to be released from federal prison sooner than previously anticipated after his projected release date was moved forward once again. The latest update marks the second adjustment in just over a month, reducing the amount of time the music mogul is expected to spend behind bars while his legal appeal remains ongoing.  According to updated records from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons, Combs is now scheduled to be released on February 23, 2028, replacing the previous projected date of April 15, 2028. Earlier this year, his expected release had already been moved up from April 25, 2028, which itself followed an earlier projected date of June 4, 2028. The repeated revisions have drawn renewed public attention to the rapper’s sentence and the federal prison system’s administrative calculations.  The 56-year-old music executive is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fort Dix in New Jersey. In 2025, a jury found Combs guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. However, he was acquitted of the more serious charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. The court also imposed a $500,000 fine and a period of supervised release following the completion of his prison sentence.  Federal officials have not publicly explained why Combs’ projected release date has been revised multiple times. Reports suggest the adjustments could be linked to standard Bureau of Prisons sentence calculations and participation in rehabilitation programs available to eligible inmates. However, prison authorities have not confirmed a specific reason for the latest change.  Meanwhile, Combs’ legal team continues to challenge his conviction. His attorneys have filed an appeal, arguing that his sentence was excessive and seeking either a new trial or a reduced sentence. The appeal remains pending, meaning the current release date could still change depending on future court decisions or administrative reviews.  The revised release timeline comes just days after reports emerged that Combs had been placed in solitary confinement following an altercation with another inmate at FCI Fort Dix. According to media reports, prison staff quickly intervened and separated those involved. It remains unclear whether the incident will have any impact on his projected release date or prison status.  Although the updated release date brings Combs one step closer to freedom, his legal troubles are far from over. Beyond the ongoing appeal, he continues to face multiple civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct, all of which he has denied. For now, February 23, 2028, remains the official projected release date listed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, though future legal or administrative developments could alter that timeline.

Federal agents arrest armed suspect near Donald Trump’s California golf course

Federal and local law enforcement officers in California have arrested a 38-year-old man who was observed taking photographs and monitoring security preparations at President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, two days before the president was scheduled to attend a political fundraising dinner at the venue. The suspect, identified as Jeanine John Taele of Downey, California, was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and federal agents. Authorities revealed that Taele had initially been spotted on the grounds of Trump National Golf Club on Friday, wearing an earpiece while filming federal personnel carrying out security assessments. Upon returning to the property on Sunday, Taele allegedly approached federal agents, falsely claimed to work for the US Department of State on a security detail, and admitted to possessing a loaded weapon inside his vehicle. Upon searching the suspect, law enforcement officers recovered a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition from his clothing. A subsequent search of his pickup truck parked on the property yielded a loaded 9mm pistol, additional hollow-point rounds, binoculars, and a fake badge reading “security protection agent”. Officers also determined that Taele was actively wanted in connection with an unrelated robbery investigation conducted by the El Segundo Police Department. Following the arrest, agents from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau executed a search warrant at Taele’s residence in Downey. Investigators seized an illegally modified short-barrelled AR-style rifle, a .45-calibre handgun, body armour, high-capacity magazines, extensive ammunition supplies, and notebooks containing what officials described as “concerning statements”. Taele, a decorated US Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008 and 2016, faces both state and federal charges. State prosecutors in Los Angeles County have charged him with second-degree robbery, possession of a short-barrelled rifle, manufacturing or receiving a large-capacity magazine, and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. He pleaded not guilty to state charges on Tuesday and remains held on $250,000 bail. Federal prosecutors have separately charged Taele with possession of an unregistered short-barrelled rifle, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. While the Secret Service and the FBI continue to investigate Taele’s motives, officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that there is currently no evidence of a direct, ongoing threat to the local community. President Trump proceeded with his planned visit to California, landing at the golf course via helicopter to host the Republican fundraising event.

Iran appoints former IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaei as national security chief

Iran has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), placing a prominent hardliner at the center of the country’s defense and foreign policy establishment. Rezaei replaces Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, who held the post briefly following the death of previous secretary Ali Larijani during an air strike in the ongoing conflict with the US and Israel. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a decree appointing Rezaei as his direct representative on the council alongside Saeed Jalili, citing Rezaei’s extensive military experience during the Iran-Iraq War. The leadership shuffle comes as Iran negotiates conditional proposals to reopen shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing military and diplomatic friction. Rezaei, 71, commanded the IRGC from 1981 to 1997 and later served as secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council and vice president for economic affairs under President Ebrahim Raisi. Zolqadr, whom officials shifted to a political advisory role under the Supreme Leader, had previously outlined strict preconditions for diplomatic progress, including an immediate end to US military threats and an easing of economic sanctions.

    # A$AP Rocky responds to Drake’s ‘Burning Brid…

A$AP Rocky has addressed the renewed tension surrounding Drake after the Canadian rapper appeared to reference Rocky and his partner, Rihanna, on his song “Burning Bridges.” The track, released as part of Drake’s 2026 album Iceman, quickly sparked discussion among hip-hop fans. Listeners interpreted several lines as possible references to Rocky, particularly a lyric questioning where a rapper’s “baby mama” was while discussing his music. Because Rihanna and Rocky are partners and share a family, fans quickly connected the lyrics to the Harlem rapper. However, neither Drake nor Rocky has explicitly confirmed every interpretation of the song. (Just Jared) Rocky and Drake’s complicated history The tension between the two rappers has been developing for years. Rocky previously addressed their relationship in an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, saying that he no longer had a good relationship with Drake. He also suggested that women and past relationships played a role in how their friendship deteriorated. (BET) The situation gained additional attention after Drake released Iceman, with fans examining its lyrics for references to Rocky, Rihanna and other celebrities. Rocky has not appeared interested in letting the online conversation dictate his response. Instead, his recent comments suggest that he is aware of the speculation but remains focused on his own career. Rihanna remains part of the conversation Drake’s apparent reference to Rihanna has attracted particular attention because of her history with both artists. Rihanna and Drake previously collaborated on several songs and had a widely discussed relationship, while she has been romantically involved with Rocky since 2020. Rihanna has also publicly supported Rocky’s career. After his album Don’t Be Dumb reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in January, she celebrated the achievement publicly, contradicting the idea that she had not supported his music. (Just Jared) The feud continues The latest exchange adds another chapter to one of hip-hop’s most closely followed rivalries. Rocky has previously responded to online speculation with humor and occasional jabs, including a July concert moment in which he held up a fan’s anti-Drake sign. (iHeart) For now, there is no indication that the situation has moved beyond music and public comments. Drake’s lyrics have fueled plenty of discussion, but interpretations remain largely driven by fans. Rocky appears to be moving forward with his own music and performances while maintaining his relationship with Rihanna and focusing on his growing family. Whether he chooses to answer Drake directly in a future song remains to be seen.

Internet slams Naeem Hanif over remarks on Mohammad Ahmed.

Journalist Naeem Hanif has come under fire on social media after commenting on veteran actor and writer Syed Mohammad Ahmed’s recent claims of being mistreated by younger actors on a drama set. His remarks sparked widespread criticism, with many internet users accusing him of being disrespectful toward a senior artist. Syed Mohammad Ahmed recently revealed that he had faced inappropriate behaviour from younger actors during a shoot. In his interview, he named actors Fahad Sheikh, Faizan Sheikh, and Jenan Hussain, saying they repeatedly made fun of him and crossed professional boundaries on set. The veteran actor’s statements received overwhelming support from fans and fellow celebrities, many of whom praised him for speaking openly about the issue. Ahmed later clarified that he had not intended for the interview to be uploaded publicly. However, once the video surfaced online, it quickly went viral, bringing the alleged incident into the spotlight and triggering a wider conversation about respect for senior artists in Pakistan’s entertainment industry. Reacting to the controversy, Naeem Hanif argued that Syed Mohammad Ahmed had exaggerated the situation. According to Hanif, actors on drama sets often joke with one another, and the incident should not have been presented as a major issue. During his analysis, Hanif said, “Muhammad Ahmed, before you make such a big thing, understand where you are. You are not a lecturer. You are not teaching an Islamiat lecture in a university that you got so offended by someone making fun of you.” He further added, “What is your venue where this all happened? You are doing a drama. You are doing acting. You are in showbiz.” His comments quickly drew backlash online, with many social media users saying his remarks were insensitive and failed to acknowledge the importance of treating senior colleagues with dignity and respect, regardless of the workplace. One user criticised Hanif for disrespecting an elder, saying it was shameful for someone calling himself a journalist to speak in such a manner about a veteran artist. The commenter also questioned his credibility as a journalist. Another social media user accused Hanif of having double standards. The commenter argued that if he believed interactions with unrelated women in the media were inappropriate, he should also reflect on his own work in television and digital media. The user questioned why he was preaching morality while continuing to benefit from the same industry. Many others echoed similar views, stating that professionalism should never be compromised and that no one, especially a senior actor with decades of experience, deserves to be ridiculed on a professional set. The debate continues online, with a large number of fans standing by Syed Mohammad Ahmed and maintaining that respect for senior artists should remain a fundamental value within the entertainment industry.

Kelly Osbourne pays emotional tribute to father Ozzy on first death anniversary

Kelly Osbourne has opened up about the grief of losing her father, legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne, as the music world marks one year since his passing. On Wednesday, July 22, the 41-year-old singer and television personality took to Instagram to share a deeply personal message about her journey through loss over the past year. It offered fans a rare, intimate look into how she has been coping since his death. In her post, Kelly explained that her mourning goes beyond simply missing her father. She wrote that death also took away a part of who she used to be. Grief, she claimed, reshaped her sense of self in ways she never expected when she first lost him. She went on to describe grief as something that quietly erodes a person from within, dimming their joy and their sense of hope. Eventually, she said, it leaves them no longer recognizing themselves the way they once did before the loss. The “Papa Don’t Preach” singer reflected on how loss changes a person’s entire outlook on life, explaining that a part of who you are effectively disappears alongside the person you have lost. She described grief as an experience that can not truly be understood until it is lived, no matter how much someone tries to imagine it in advance or prepare themselves for its weight. Kelly also spoke about how losing a parent can feel like it splits a person’s life into two chapters, one who they were before the loss, and then who they have become since. She described carrying a love that no longer has anywhere to go, with no outlet left for all that remains unspoken. Closing out her tribute, she admitted that death does not just take away the people we love. It leaves the rest of us carrying on as different, changed versions of ourselves, forced to live with an absence that never fully fades. Ozzy Osbourne, widely known as the “Prince of Darkness,” rose to fame as the frontman of Black Sabbath, the band widely credited with pioneering heavy metal. He later built a decades-long solo career and became a reality television fixture through The Osbournes. He died of heart failure on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, following a long battle with health issues in his final years. The rock icon is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sharon Osbourne, along with their three children, Aimee, Kelly, and Jack. All of them have continued to honour his memory publicly since his passing.
