Jon Batiste cancels concerts amid wife’s cancer battle

Jon Batiste has cancelled three upcoming concerts in the United States amid what he described as personal circumstances.

The Grammy-winning singer was scheduled to perform at three venues this week. However, fans were informed on Wednesday, August 12, that the performances had been called off.

Batiste was due to perform at the New Haven Westville Music Bowl in Connecticut on Thursday, August 13.

He was then scheduled to take the stage at the TD Pavilion at Highmark Mann in Philadelphia on Friday, August 14.

His third show was planned for Forest Hills Stadium in New York on Saturday, August 15.

The singer addressed the cancellations in a statement shared by the venues.

“As I navigate some personal circumstances, I unfortunately need to cancel a portion of my upcoming performance dates,” Batiste said.

Despite the cancellations, Batiste assured fans that he remains committed to his music. He also highlighted his upcoming albums, Monk Meditations and Monk Movements.

The musician said his team is looking for new ways to share his music with fans. He also expressed hope that he would be able to return to live performances soon.

Fans affected by the cancellations will receive refunds through the original point of purchase.

Batiste’s decision comes as his wife, Suleika Jaouad, continues her long battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Jaouad is a bestselling author and Emmy Award-winning journalist. She is also known for her memoir Life, Interrupted, which explores her experience with cancer.

Jaouad was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 22. After undergoing treatment, she eventually entered remission.

However, the disease returned in 2021. Her treatment later included another bone marrow transplant.

In 2024, Jaouad was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia once again. She has continued to receive treatment since then.

Acute myeloid leukemia is an aggressive cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. Treatment can involve several stages and may require long-term medical care.

A May 2026 profile reported that Jaouad was expected to remain in treatment for the rest of her life. Her cancer was also described as incurable.

Batiste and Jaouad have remained supportive of each other throughout her health struggles. The couple married in 2022 after years of being together.

Although Batiste did not specifically mention his wife’s cancer in his concert cancellation statement, the announcement comes during a particularly challenging period for the couple.

For now, Batiste appears to be stepping back from some of his live commitments while continuing to work on his music.

Fans will now await further updates about his cancelled performances and his eventual return to the stage.

    A US judge in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $567 million over allegations that its social media platforms failed to adequately protect children from harmful content and online risks. The ruling is the largest penalty Meta has faced in a child safety case. It brings the total amount the company has been ordered to pay in the New Mexico case to $942 million, including an earlier $375 million penalty. Judge Bryan Biedscheid ruled that Meta’s platforms had created harms serious enough to be considered a “public nuisance”. He compared the company’s operations to a factory, saying harmful effects on children spread beyond the platforms and affect families, schools, healthcare providers and law enforcement. The judge ordered the money to be placed in a fund designed to address the impact of social media-related harm on children. A large portion of the fund, about $420 million, will support clinical and behavioural health programmes for people affected by such harms. Additional funding will be used for awareness and prevention programmes, including training for teachers and healthcare professionals. The court also imposed a series of measures aimed at strengthening protections for users under 18. Meta will be required to prevent adult users from messaging minors and stop accounts belonging to users under 18 from being recommended to adults. The company must also restrict the sending and receiving of nude material by underage users. The ruling further requires Meta to adopt a strict policy against adult users involved in child sexual exploitation. Other restrictions include removing “like” counts for users under 18 and limiting push notifications during overnight hours. Notifications will also be restricted during normal school hours on school days. The court additionally ordered a monthly usage limit of 90 hours across Instagram and Facebook for users under 18. Meta, which operates Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Threads, rejected the ruling and said it would appeal. The company said it works to protect users and has been transparent about the challenges of detecting harmful content and malicious actors. Meta also maintained that the ruling does not accurately reflect its efforts to protect teenagers online. The New Mexico case began with a lawsuit filed by state authorities in 2023. Prosecutors argued that Meta’s platforms exposed children to harmful material and enabled contact with sexual predators. During the earlier stage of the case, Meta was found to have violated New Mexico’s consumer protection law. The court determined that its recommendation systems could direct young users towards harmful content and potentially dangerous contacts. Meta is facing thousands of similar lawsuits across the United States. Nearly three dozen state attorneys general are also pursuing claims involving the company’s treatment of children and their privacy.

    Wildfires force 43,000 to flee in France

    More than 43,000 people have been evacuated from southwestern France as massive wildfires continue to spread across several regions, threatening residential areas, forests and popular tourist destinations. Authorities ordered the complete evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a major holiday destination on France’s Atlantic coast that attracts thousands of visitors every summer. Residents, tourists and campers were instructed to leave immediately as emergency services expanded evacuation operations. To speed up the evacuation, authorities arranged transport by both road and sea. Special boats were deployed from several coastal villages while vehicles used the peninsula’s only highway leading to the mainland. Emergency officials urged everyone in the affected areas to leave without delay for their own safety. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the Gironde wildfire as the largest fire of the current season. He said around 80 homes have been damaged, including nearly 50 houses that were completely destroyed by the flames. More than 1,000 firefighters, supported by helicopters, military engineering units and civil security teams, are working to control the blaze in Gironde. Hundreds of police officers and emergency personnel have also been deployed to help with evacuations, traffic management and public safety. Several European countries have agreed to send additional firefighting aircraft and helicopters to help French authorities contain the fires. Croatia is sending Canadair water-bombing aircraft, while Portugal will provide specialised firefighting planes. The Czech Republic and Slovakia are also deploying heavy helicopters to assist emergency crews. Emergency officials said there have been no confirmed fatalities in the Gironde wildfire so far. However, they warned that weather conditions remain highly dangerous and could make firefighting efforts even more difficult in the coming days. Fire experts say the blazes are spreading unusually quickly because of prolonged heatwaves, severe drought and strong winds. These conditions have left forests and vegetation extremely dry, allowing fires to expand rapidly across large areas.     Balochistan home minister survives Mastung convoy …

    QUETTA: Balochistan Home Minister Mir Ziaullah Langove remained safe after armed attackers targeted his convoy in Mastung on Friday. The attack took place in the Khad Kocha area. Langove was travelling from Kalat to Quetta when his convoy came under fire. The minister was not injured in the attack. However, six people sustained bullet wounds. Three of the injured were police personnel accompanying the convoy. The injured were immediately taken to Nawab Raisani Memorial Hospital for treatment. Hospital officials said six wounded people were brought to the facility. Two injured people were in serious condition. Two others were later referred to Quetta for further medical treatment. Security forces quickly surrounded the area after the attack. A search operation was launched to trace the attackers and determine their whereabouts. Security personnel also began collecting evidence from the site. The authorities are investigating how the attackers targeted the convoy and managed to escape. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident has raised fresh security concerns in Mastung and surrounding areas. Balochistan has witnessed several attacks in recent years, with security forces frequently conducting operations against armed groups. Langove belongs to the Balochistan Awami Party. He assumed the provincial home ministry in March this year. He has previously served as Balochistan’s home minister. His earlier appointment was later declared invalid after he was removed from the provincial cabinet in August 2024. The latest attack has prompted authorities to review security arrangements for senior government officials travelling through sensitive areas.
