29 bottled water brands found unsafe in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A quarterly quality assessment of bottled drinking water has found 29 out of 230 brands to be substandard and unsafe for consumption, raising concerns about the quality of commercially available drinking water in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) conducts quarterly monitoring of bottled and mineral water brands available in the market on the directions of the government.

For the latest assessment, samples of 230 bottled and mineral water brands were collected from 20 cities during the April-June 2026 quarter.

The samples were analysed in laboratories according to the standards recommended by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).

Laboratory testing found that several water brands were contaminated with harmful bacteria, making them unsafe for human consumption. A total of 29 brands failed to meet the required quality standards.

The report found that nine brands had excessive levels of sodium. These included HR Water Healthy Life, A2Z Pure Bottled Drinking Water, Pure Drinking Water, Deep Blue Pure Drinking Water, Sup Nest Pure Drinking Water, Aab-e-Haram, Aqua Life Bottled Drinking Water, Drinklay and Alpha H2O Bottled Drinking Water.

The assessment also found excessive total dissolved solids (TDS) in four brands: A2Z Pure Bottled Drinking Water, Imperial Pure Drinking Water, Aab-e-Haram and Alpha H2O Bottled Drinking Water. The recommended safe limit for TDS is 500 parts per million (ppm).

According to the council, 22 brands were found to be contaminated with bacteria. These included My Sial Bottled Drinking Water, JERS Safe Life Bottled Drinking Water, Natural Pure Life, Natural Sup, Al Meer Bottled Drinking Water, Al-Saha Drinking Water, Al-Shifa Pure Life, Royal Fina Bottled Drinking Water, Aqua Nice Pure Life, Noor Aqua, Aqua Pure, Drink Well Pure Drinking Water, Imperial Pure Drinking Water, Zalmi, Deep Blue Pure Drinking Water, Aab-e-Haram, Vital Sup Bottled Drinking Water, Hunza Alter Water, Rehydrate8 Drink Pure Water, Moya Mineral Water, Tynant Aqua Bottled Drinking Water and Aqua Pura Smart.

The presence of harmful microorganisms means that the affected brands may pose health risks if consumed without proper treatment.

The findings have raised concerns about the monitoring and regulation of bottled water sold across the country. Regular testing is considered important to ensure that drinking water available to consumers meets safety and quality standards.

Representatives of some of the companies named in the report, however, rejected the findings. They claimed that their water brands meet the required quality standards.

    PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has unanimously rejected any reported move to separate Haripur and Abbottabad from the province and place them under the administrative control of Islamabad, warning that any such attempt would undermine provincial autonomy and constitutional rights. The resolution was adopted during Friday’s session after Provincial Minister Akbar Ayub presented a strongly worded motion opposing any proposal by the federal government to alter the status of K-P districts, particularly Haripur and Abbottabad. The House declared that all districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are an integral part of the province and cannot be separated under any circumstances. It maintained that changing provincial boundaries for administrative, political or economic purposes, or to gain control over natural resources, would violate the constitutional rights of the province and its people. The resolution specifically highlighted K-P’s water resources, hydropower facilities, mineral wealth, forests and other natural assets, stating that these resources belong constitutionally to the province and its people. Any attempt, directly or indirectly, to take control of these resources was described as unacceptable. The provincial legislature called on the federal government to immediately drop any proposal concerning the separation of the districts and respect the existing constitutional, geographical and administrative status of K-P. The House also urged political parties, lawmakers, constitutional bodies, lawyers, civil society, young people and the media to maintain a united position in protecting the province’s territorial integrity, autonomy and public interests. During the same session, PPP lawmaker Mehr Sultana raised concerns over the lack of effective rules requiring doctors to prescribe medicines using generic names rather than specific brands. She also called for computerized prescriptions to become mandatory, pointing out that unclear handwritten prescriptions can create difficulties for patients and increase the risk of errors. She urged the provincial government to introduce legislation or regulations addressing both issues, with the aim of improving prescription practices and protecting patients.

Earlier, Bangladesh had built a strong platform through Tanzid Hasan’s maiden Test century and a determined half-century from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. Australia’s first innings had already ended in disappointment after Hasan Mahmud claimed six wickets, exposing weaknesses in the home side’s batting. Bangladesh’s huge lead now puts Australia under considerable pressure.     ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed hope that progress on the Strait of Hormuz issue will create momentum for renewed dialogue between Iran and the United States, reaffirming its commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions in the region. Speaking at the weekly media briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan expects the implementation of the Islamabad Reconciliation Framework to advance through consensus on the Strait of Hormuz, paving the way for technical-level talks between Tehran and Washington. He said Pakistan supports the resumption of negotiations between Iran and the United States and will continue to play a constructive diplomatic role alongside regional partners. According to the spokesperson, Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, and other friendly countries remain engaged in coordinated efforts to promote peace and stability, with Oman playing a particularly positive role in efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz.     TEHRAN: Iran has strongly condemned a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, saying the incident killed one sailor and injured another, and warning that the strike could further widen the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Any expansion of military operations there could carry diplomatic consequences for Iran, Ukraine and Russia. For Tehran, the reported death of an Iranian sailor has added a new layer of tension to an already volatile international situation. For Kyiv, strikes against vessels suspected of carrying military-related cargo are part of efforts to disrupt support networks linked to Russia and Iran. The incident now raises questions over whether the confrontation will remain limited to diplomatic protests or lead to further escalation between Tehran and Kyiv.
