Iran condemns Ukraine’s Caspian Sea strike as te…

TEHRAN: Iran has strongly condemned a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, saying the incident killed one sailor and injured another, and warning that the strike could further widen the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the vessel was hit early Saturday, causing an explosion that resulted in the casualties. Tehran described the incident as an “act of aggression” and said the attack violated the principles of the UN Charter.

Iran also summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires to formally register its protest over the incident, according to reports. The diplomatic move underscored Tehran’s growing concern over what it described as the expansion of the Ukraine war into areas far beyond the main battlefield.

The Iranian ministry said Tehran had never intervened in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and warned that the attack could contribute to the spread of insecurity and violence. It also said Iran would not hesitate to defend its national interests and security, holding Ukraine responsible for what it called the consequences of its actions.

The Ukrainian account, however, presents a different picture.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had targeted a Russian warship and vessels allegedly being used to transport military cargo linked to Iran in the Caspian Sea. Kyiv has accused Moscow of supporting Iran and has increasingly focused on supply routes connected to Iranian military assistance.

The Caspian Sea has become an increasingly sensitive strategic area amid the wider regional and international tensions. Any expansion of military operations there could carry diplomatic consequences for Iran, Ukraine and Russia.

For Tehran, the reported death of an Iranian sailor has added a new layer of tension to an already volatile international situation. For Kyiv, strikes against vessels suspected of carrying military-related cargo are part of efforts to disrupt support networks linked to Russia and Iran.

The incident now raises questions over whether the confrontation will remain limited to diplomatic protests or lead to further escalation between Tehran and Kyiv.

‘No more theatre’: Ghalibaf challenges Trump over talks

TEHRAN: Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has delivered a blunt message to US President Donald Trump, calling for facts, commitments and serious diplomacy instead of what he described as political theatre. Reacting to Trump’s remarks suggesting that a major attack could be imminent, Ghalibaf said Iran was still prepared to negotiate, but expected the United States to demonstrate seriousness at the negotiating table. “Accept the facts and fulfil your promises,” Ghalibaf said, stressing that there was no need for further diplomatic drama and that responsible conduct was required. His comments come amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, with negotiations remaining a key focus even as both sides continue to exchange strong warnings. Ghalibaf has emerged as a central figure in Iran’s diplomatic efforts and has been involved in negotiations with the United States. He was also re-elected as speaker of Iran’s parliament in May, securing 235 votes from 271 lawmakers who cast ballots. Ghalibaf accused Washington of repeatedly using pressure tactics, including threats, broken promises and what he characterized as false reports. According to him, such an approach has failed to achieve its intended purpose. The Iranian official’s message combines a firm warning with an opening for dialogue: Tehran, he suggested, is willing to talk, but not under pressure. The latest remarks could add another layer of uncertainty to already fragile US-Iran diplomacy, particularly as both sides weigh whether negotiations can prevent another escalation.

  • Ufone service disruption, Senate questions PTA over telecom merger

Islamabad: Pakistan’s telecom sector came under serious scrutiny as the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat questioned the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) over the recent disruption in Ufone services and demanded answers about the future of the country’s mobile communication system. During the meeting chaired by Senator Rana Mahmood ul Hassan, Chairman PTA was directly questioned about the reason behind the Ufone service failure. Senator Rana Mahmood ul Hassan asked, “Why has Ufone’s service collapsed?” while seeking an explanation from the telecom regulator. Responding to the concerns, Chairman PTA informed the committee that Ufone is a government-owned company and said the issues would be resolved after the completion of the ongoing merger process between Ufone and Telenor. The Chairman PTA further informed the committee that after the merger of Ufone and Telenor, a new telecommunications company would be established, marking a major change in Pakistan’s telecom sector. The committee was informed that Pakistan currently has 210 million active SIMs, showing continued expansion of mobile connectivity across the country. However, lawmakers raised questions about whether service quality is improving at the same pace as user growth. The meeting was attended by Senators Saadia Abbasi, Abdul Qadir, Dilawar Khan, Aimal Wali Khan and Saleem Mandviwalla, along with the Secretary Cabinet Division and Secretary Establishment Division. The Chairman PTA also briefed the committee about the restructuring of PTCL and Ufone, stating that both companies are being separated as part of the ongoing changes in the telecommunications sector. During the discussion on digital reforms, the PTA Chairman informed lawmakers that talks are underway with NADRA to introduce SIM issuance through the Pak ID platform. Under the proposed system, citizens may be able to obtain SIM cards from their homes through a digital process, reducing the need for physical visits. However, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla raised concerns over Pakistan’s position in modern telecom technology and questioned why the country has not moved faster towards eSIM technology, which is already being adopted globally. The committee stressed that Pakistan’s telecom sector needs stronger digital development, better customer services and modern solutions to meet international standards. The PTA Chairman informed the committee that the merger process between Ufone and Telenor is expected to bring improvements and create a stronger telecommunications company. The regulator said these changes aim to improve services and strengthen Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure. The meeting concluded with the committee emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, digital advancement and improved public service delivery in government institutions, especially in sectors directly connected with millions of citizens.
