BERLIN: A celebration that had drawn huge crowds to Berlin for Christopher Street Day ended in tragedy late Saturday when a vehicle drove into people near the event, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others.

The incident happened shortly after 10pm local time in the Tiergarten area, near the route of the Pride celebrations. Emergency services rushed to the scene as police launched a major operation and ordered people to leave the area.

According to police, the vehicle struck several people before the driver fled the scene. One person died, while 16 others were injured. Several victims were reported to be in serious or life-threatening condition, adding to the shock surrounding an event that had begun peacefully.

Authorities quickly called off the remaining Christopher Street Day celebrations and urged visitors to stay away from the affected area. Police and rescue teams remained deployed around Tiergarten as investigators worked to establish exactly what happened and why.

The incident also triggered an immediate search for the suspected driver. Police said they had identified a possible suspect but had not initially confirmed an arrest. German authorities were investigating the circumstances and motive behind the vehicle attack.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the incident as an attack on the city’s free and cosmopolitan society, expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. He also praised emergency responders who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also condemned the incident and pledged that those responsible would face justice.

The tragedy cast a dark shadow over one of Berlin’s biggest annual public celebrations. Christopher Street Day is both a major Pride gathering and a public demonstration for LGBTQ+ rights, equality and freedom.

What had started as a day of colorful parades, music and crowds waving rainbow flags ended with emergency vehicles filling the streets and the celebration being abruptly abandoned.

Police have urged members of the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues and to rely on official information rather than unverified reports circulating online.

The blast caused minor injuries to two police personnel. Earlier, on July 29, a police officer lost his life and four terrorists were killed during an operation in Matta tehsil of Swat. The latest incidents come days after a deadly attack on a joint police checkpost in Tank district, where 15 people, including 14 security personnel and a government official, were martyred. According to the military’s media wing, security forces killed 12 attackers after thwarting their attempt to breach the checkpost. One terrorist vehicle packed with explosives also struck the perimeter wall, causing significant damage. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to face a growing threat from militant attacks. The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies reported that security personnel deaths in terrorism-related incidents across KP, excluding the merged districts, rose from 12 in June to 38 in July. Terrorist deaths also increased from 37 to 108 during the same period, while civilian fatalities dropped from 26 to seven.

    AJK polls underway as 1.4m voters cast ballots

    MUZAFFARABAD: Polling is underway in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Voting started at 8am and will continue until 5pm. Elections are being held today in 13 constituencies across three districts of Mirpur division — Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Polling has started at several stations. However, voting has yet to begin at some locations because voters have not arrived. In Kotli, polling is underway at Polling Station No. 38 in Aghar Colony. Voting has not started at polling stations 36 and 37 due to the absence of voters. Candidates cast votes Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, contesting from LA-7 in Bhimber, cast his vote at Polling Station No. 161. Speaking after voting, Farooq said voter turnout was expected to be higher in rural areas than in cities. He also urged women to leave their homes after completing household responsibilities and exercise their right to vote. Farooq expressed satisfaction with the law and order situation and the arrangements made for the elections in Bhimber. PPP confident of victory Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Muhammad Humayun Khan said the party was confident of securing a strong victory in the Azad Kashmir elections. He said the party’s electoral symbol, the arrow, represented the Kashmiri people’s rights to governance, ownership and employment. Humayun Khan said the PPP would continue to raise the voice of the people of Kashmir at every forum. He also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, describing it as an important need. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari also expressed confidence that voters in Azad Kashmir would support the PPP. He said the party had played an important role in establishing a parliamentary democratic system in Azad Kashmir. More than 1.4 million voters registered A total of 296 candidates are contesting the elections, including candidates from the PPP, PML-N, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and independent candidates. There are 1,401,439 registered voters across the 13 constituencies. The number includes 725,118 male voters and 675,628 female voters. A total of 2,454 polling stations have been established across Mirpur division. Mirpur district has 597 polling stations across four constituencies. Kotli has 1,107 stations across six constituencies, while 608 polling stations have been established in three constituencies of Bhimber. Officials urge voters to participate Mirpur Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz and DIG Kamran Ali visited wards 16 and 17 of LA-3 to review the polling arrangements. Speaking to the media, Commissioner Mumtaz said polling was proceeding peacefully across all three districts from 8am. He urged voters to come out and cast their ballots without fear. He assured the public that the administration had arranged a peaceful environment for voters. Tight security arrangements Authorities have put in place extensive security measures for the elections. Azad Kashmir Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Mustafa Mughal warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the voting process. AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan said the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected groups seeking to create disorder and had shown confidence in the democratic process. He said all state institutions were prepared to ensure peaceful elections.

    WASHINGTON: US senators are demanding an investigation into reported conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, as concerns grow over food shortages, broken plumbing, contaminated water and mental health problems during the aircraft carrier’s unusually long deployment in the Middle East. Democratic senators called for answers from the US Navy on Wednesday, citing reports that the nuclear-powered carrier has remained at sea for more than 250 days and has not come ashore for more than 200 days. Senator Richard Blumenthal, in a letter to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, urged the Pentagon to explain the conditions facing personnel aboard the ship. He said the extended deployment had been accompanied by reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing failures and deteriorating mental health. The concerns have also reached the Senate Armed Services Committee, with Senator Ruben Gallego calling for an official oversight visit involving a bipartisan Senate delegation. In a post on X, Gallego said lawmakers should be allowed to inspect the carrier and investigate what he described as alarming reports from personnel and their families. The USS Abraham Lincoln left San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025, initially heading for duty in the South China Sea. It was later redirected towards the Middle East as tensions escalated ahead of US and Israeli attacks on Iran that began on February 28. The prolonged deployment has reportedly placed significant pressure on the approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the carrier. During recent meetings, family members reportedly confronted Navy officials over shortages of food and other basic necessities while seeking clarity about when their relatives might return home. Some accounts have also raised serious concerns about mental health among crew members. Reports cited by lawmakers included alleged suicide attempts and threats by personnel to jump from the ship. Gallego highlighted claims of moldy showers, irregular hot water, rationed meals and soap, broken toilets and exhausting 12-to-16-hour work shifts without regular days off. “These are frightening alarm bells,” Gallego said, arguing that the reported conditions require immediate attention. The allegations come as the Lincoln continues a deployment that has already broken records for consecutive days at sea. Extended deployments can place additional physical and psychological demands on military personnel, particularly when access to supplies, recreation and shore-based support is limited. The US Navy had not immediately responded to an AFP request for comment. For the senators, the immediate priority is accountability and determining whether sailors and Marines aboard the carrier have adequate food, water, medical care and safe working conditions. The growing calls for oversight could now put pressure on the Pentagon and Navy leadership to provide answers about one of the longest and most demanding carrier deployments in recent US military history.

The discovery is being viewed as a breakthrough that could reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported lithium while creating new investment and industrial opportunities. Under the agreement, OGDCL and PINSTECH will work together to design and develop advanced extraction technologies capable of recovering lithium efficiently from geothermal brine. The initiative is expected to pave the way for the establishment of a domestic lithium processing industry, supporting the growing global demand for the critical mineral. Lithium is considered one of the world’s most valuable strategic minerals due to its extensive use in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops, renewable energy storage systems, and other advanced technologies. As global demand continues to rise, countries with commercially viable lithium resources are increasingly focusing on developing local production capabilities. Officials believe the partnership will strengthen Pakistan’s mineral exploration efforts, promote scientific research, and encourage technology-driven industrial development. The project is also expected to contribute to economic growth by attracting investment, generating employment opportunities, and enhancing the country’s position in the global critical minerals market.
