Wheat imports spark farmer anger

The federal government’s decision to import one million tonnes of wheat has sparked strong criticism from farmers and agricultural experts. The move has raised concerns about Pakistan’s food policy and the country’s continued dependence on imported grain despite being a major wheat producer.

Pakistan produces around 31 million tonnes of wheat annually. The crop covers nearly 40 per cent of the country’s cultivated area and remains a major part of the daily diet of millions of people. Punjab is the country’s largest wheat-producing province and contributes almost three-fourths of national production.

Farmers and experts say the issue is not simply about wheat availability. They believe repeated imports are linked to weak planning, inaccurate crop estimates, poor storage facilities, post-harvest losses and inconsistent government policies. Population growth and changing weather patterns have also increased pressure on the wheat supply chain.

Farmer organisations have strongly opposed the import decision. They say local growers are still struggling to sell their recently harvested wheat. Many farmers claim they are receiving prices below their production costs after spending heavily on seeds, fertiliser, pesticides, diesel and electricity.

Growers fear that imported wheat could further reduce local prices. They argue that the government should first ensure that locally produced wheat is purchased at fair rates before turning to international markets.

The controversy has also highlighted changes in Pakistan’s wheat procurement system. Under wider economic reforms linked to the International Monetary Fund programme, successive governments have reduced state intervention in agricultural markets. The aim is to limit government losses and encourage greater private-sector participation.

The IMF has not directly ordered Pakistan to stop purchasing wheat from farmers. However, governments have moved away from the traditional procurement and support price system. Provincial authorities have also reduced wheat purchases, leaving farmers increasingly dependent on private traders.

Farmers say the transition has not been properly managed. They argue that private buyers now have greater influence over prices because of weak market regulation. This has forced some growers to sell their wheat below production costs.

Netflix finally unveils Pakistan’s biggest series

Pakistan’s first original Netflix series, “Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo,” is reportedly set to premiere by the end of 2026 after facing repeated delays that left fans uncertain about its future. The series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by acclaimed writer Farhat Ishtiaq. First published as a serialized story in 2009, the novel later appeared in book form in 2013 and became one of Pakistan’s most popular contemporary romance novels. The project marks a major milestone for Pakistan’s entertainment industry as it is the country’s first original production created specifically for Netflix. Unlike several Pakistani television dramas that were added to the streaming platform after airing locally, this series was developed exclusively as a Netflix original. The drama features one of the biggest ensemble casts in Pakistani television. It stars Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Bilal Ashraf, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Hania Aamir, Iqra Aziz, Sanam Saeed, Ahad Raza Mir, Nadia Khan, along with several other well-known actors. The series has been directed and produced by Momina Duraid. The project was initially expected to debut in 2025, but its release was postponed without any official explanation. The delay led to widespread speculation among viewers, with many questioning whether the series would ever reach the streaming platform. Fresh reports now suggest that post-production work is nearing completion. The final editing process is said to be underway, while promotional activities involving the cast are expected to begin in the coming weeks ahead of the planned release. Despite the latest update, many fans remain cautious after the long wait. Social media users have expressed excitement about the possibility of finally watching the series but say they will believe the release only when Netflix officially announces the premiere date and makes the episodes available. If released as expected, “Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo” is likely to become one of Pakistan’s biggest digital entertainment launches, introducing local storytelling to a wider international audience through one of the world’s leading streaming platforms.

Lee Andrews’ father freed from Dubai prison

The father of Katie Price’s estranged husband, Lee Andrews, has reportedly been released from Dubai’s Al Awir Central Prison after being briefly detained alongside his son on fraud and financial debt allegations, according to local reports. The elder Andrews was taken into custody earlier this month after becoming embroiled in the complex web of financial and legal disputes surrounding his son in the United Arab Emirates. The dramatic arrest meant both father and son were simultaneously held inside the high-security Dubai correctional facility, which frequently detains foreign nationals involved in civil and criminal litigation. While details regarding the exact terms of his release remain limited, sources indicate that the elder Andrews was freed after authorities resolved his preliminary processing matters and cleared his immediate detention status. However, Lee Andrews remains behind bars as he works to secure the substantial funds required to clear multiple outstanding financial judgments and legal claims lodged against him in the UAE. The ongoing legal saga initially made international headlines after British media personality and model Katie Price launched a public search for Andrews, whom she married in January following a whirlwind 15-day romance. Andrews had mysteriously disappeared while attempting to travel to the United Kingdom, leading Price and his family to express fears that he had been kidnapped on suspicion of espionage. However, UAE authorities later confirmed that Andrews had been arrested over unpaid civil debts and alleged business fraud. Court records and insider reports reveal that Andrews faces multiple legal proceedings in Dubai, including a dispute with a local car rental agency over an unpaid bill exceeding 266,000 dirhams (approximately £54,000), alongside thousands in unpaid legal fees owed to a UAE law firm. Additional allegations involve an unpaid £140,000 court fine and claims from international investors alleging fraudulent property schemes. Despite remaining incarcerated, Andrews has reportedly assured fellow inmates that his release is imminent once his legal team finishes processing financial settlements with creditors. Meanwhile, Price—who recently traveled to Dubai to visit him behind bars—has publicly refused to assist him financially or set up crowdfunding campaigns to cover his debts. Friends close to the former glamour model indicate that she is growing increasingly frustrated by the mounting legal drama, with reports suggesting she is considering formal divorce proceedings once Andrews’ legal issues in the Emirates are fully resolved.
