LAHORE: The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has crossed a major milestone in its Global IT Certifications Program, attracting more than 20,000 applications since the initiative was launched in September 2024. The achievement was highlighted during a progress review meeting chaired by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf, where senior officials assessed the program’s implementation and future direction.

The meeting was attended by Director General e-Governance Sajid Latif, Director of the Skills Development Wing Chaudhry Ahmed Islam, and other senior officials. Discussions focused on the pace of application processing, candidate and certification verification, as well as the reimbursement system designed to support successful participants.

Officials informed the meeting that the eligibility of nearly 11,000 applicants has already been verified through a dedicated online portal developed by PITB. Payment verification has been completed for approximately 1,350 candidates, while certification verification has been finalized for around 1,150 applicants, paving the way for reimbursement of certification costs.

According to the briefing, 662 candidates have so far received full reimbursement of their certification fees. The payments were transferred directly to their bank accounts after successful completion of internationally recognized IT certifications and the verification of their credentials.

The Global IT Certifications Program is aimed at equipping Punjab’s youth with internationally recognized digital qualifications, helping them strengthen their professional skills, improve employment prospects, and compete in the rapidly evolving global technology sector.

Speaking during the meeting, Chairman Faisal Yousaf said the strong response from aspiring professionals reflects the increasing demand for internationally recognized digital expertise. He noted that, in line with the evolving needs of the IT industry, PITB has expanded the initiative to include 125 globally recognized IT certifications, offering young Pakistanis broader opportunities to develop competitive careers in the international digital economy.

PITB has encouraged interested individuals to apply for the program through its official online portal, where details regarding eligibility, available certifications, and the registration process are available.

Syria condemns Israeli airstrikes as ‘flagrant violation’

Syria has strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Idlib province, calling the attack a serious violation of its sovereignty. The Syrian Foreign Ministry said the strikes were an unjustified act of aggression. It warned that continued Israeli attacks could further destabilise the region. According to Syrian state media, Israeli aircraft carried out several strikes on the abandoned military airbase early Tuesday. The attacks targeted the runway and caused damage to the facility’s infrastructure. No casualties were reported in the strikes. The Syrian Foreign Ministry said the attacks were particularly concerning as Damascus was seeking to maintain stability and avoid further escalation in the region. It accused Israel of undermining those efforts and increasing tensions through repeated military operations inside Syrian territory. The ministry said Israeli attacks had continued since December 2024. It argued that the repeated strikes threatened Syria’s territorial integrity and regional security. The Abu al-Duhur airbase is located in the eastern countryside of Idlib in northern Syria. The facility has been largely inactive, but its strategic military infrastructure has remained a target during Israel’s operations in Syria. Israel has carried out numerous strikes in Syria in recent years. Its operations have previously targeted weapons depots, missile facilities and military positions linked to Iranian forces and Hezbollah. The latest strikes also drew concern from Washington. US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said the United States was “deeply concerned” about the Israeli operation. He described the strikes as an unnecessary escalation that would not contribute to regional stability. Barrack said Syria’s current government had not adopted what he called a predatory approach or maintained proxy forces. He added that Damascus had repeatedly indicated a preference for reducing tensions with Israel. The US envoy said Washington remained willing to support diplomatic efforts between the two sides. He stressed that dialogue should be prioritised over military escalation. The latest developments come amid continued instability in Syria following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government. Israel has expanded its military activity in Syria since then, citing security concerns. Damascus has repeatedly condemned Israeli military operations and called for respect for Syrian sovereignty.

Afghanistan exports Black Dimension Stone to US

Afghanistan has exported a shipment of its natural Black Dimension Stone to the United States for the first time, marking a significant step for the country’s mining and export sector. According to Afghan media reports, the shipment is valued at around $100,000. The export is being viewed as an important milestone in Afghanistan’s efforts to expand its presence in international mineral markets. The shipment was arranged by a private Afghan company. However, officials have not disclosed the name of the exporting company or the identity of the American buyer. The exported stone was extracted from a mine located in the Zindajan district of Herat province, an area known for its mineral resources. Zindajan lies approximately 40 kilometres west of Herat city, close to the border with Iran. Natural Black Dimension Stone is widely used in the construction and architectural industries for flooring, wall cladding, monuments and decorative projects because of its durability and polished appearance. The latest export highlights Afghanistan’s growing interest in developing its mining sector, which is considered one of the country’s most valuable economic resources. The country possesses significant deposits of marble, gemstones, precious metals and other industrial minerals that have the potential to boost exports and generate foreign exchange. Officials hope that increased international demand for Afghan minerals will encourage further investment in the mining industry and create new economic opportunities

Pakistan turns 79, leaders call for unity, reform …

ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day on Friday, the country’s civilian and military leadership delivered a common message: the sacrifices that created Pakistan must now be matched by unity, institutional reform, economic progress and opportunities for its people. Independence Day celebrations began across the country with traditional ceremonies. A 31-gun salute was held in Islamabad, while 21-gun salutes were fired at provincial headquarters. At the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi, a change-of-guards ceremony was also held to honour the founder of Pakistan. The messages issued by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the armed forces focused not only on Pakistan’s past but also on the challenges shaping its future. Zardari urges reforms and investment in youth In his Independence Day message, President Zardari paid tribute to the leaders of the Pakistan Movement and millions who made sacrifices for an independent homeland. He described independence as more than a historic achievement, saying each generation had a responsibility to strengthen the country and build on the work of those who came before. Reflecting on the country’s security challenges, the president said the events surrounding last year’s Marka-i-Haq had demonstrated Pakistan’s desire for peace as well as its determination to defend its sovereignty and national interests. He also paid tribute to members of the armed forces, police and law enforcement agencies who had lost their lives while protecting the country. The president stressed that Pakistan’s security was closely connected with peace in the region. He said the country would continue using diplomatic channels to encourage dialogue, reduce tensions and support regional stability. But the strongest part of his message centred on domestic development. Zardari called for economic, social and governance reforms, better education, stronger skills development and greater opportunities for young people. He said Pakistan’s youth represented the country’s greatest strength and that investment in their education and abilities would ultimately determine the nation’s future. For ordinary citizens, he noted, national progress should be visible in everyday life — through better education and healthcare, employment opportunities and greater economic security for families, farmers, workers and businesses. PM Shehbaz highlights economic progress Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called for national unity while highlighting what he described as economic achievements made during the past two-and-a-half years. He said Pakistan had navigated difficult circumstances and moved towards economic stability, while remittances from overseas Pakistanis had risen by $11.3 billion over two years. The prime minister identified information technology, innovation, industrial and agricultural development, employment creation, education and skills training as key priorities for the government. He also praised the armed forces for their role during Marka-i-Haq and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its national interests, including its water resources. Shehbaz pointed to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye as evidence of Pakistan’s growing strategic importance. He also reiterated Islamabad’s support for the people of occupied Kashmir and Palestine, while calling for diplomatic solutions to regional disputes. Military leadership calls for unity Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu also issued Independence Day messages. According to ISPR, the armed forces paid tribute to Jinnah, the country’s martyrs, veterans, law enforcement personnel and citizens who had served Pakistan. The military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the Constitution and protecting national interests. The message also stressed that Pakistan’s real strength lay in the unity and collective determination of its people. As the green and white flags filled streets, buildings and homes across the country, the leadership’s messages offered a reminder that Independence Day is not only about remembering 1947. It is also about asking what Pakistan can become in the years ahead — a country where security is matched by stability, economic growth by opportunity, and national strength by better lives for its people. The shared call from the leadership was clear: unity, discipline and meaningful reform must turn the promise of independence into progress for every Pakistani.
