Cher ordered to pay over $1 million in legal fees

Cher has been ordered to bear more than $1 million in her own legal expenses despite previously winning a long-running legal battle over music royalties linked to her former husband and musical partner, Sonny Bono.

The legal dispute began in October 2021 when the legendary singer and actress filed a lawsuit against Sonny Bono’s widow, Mary Bono. Cher sought to protect her right to receive royalties from songs recorded during the successful Sonny & Cher partnership and claimed she was entitled to damages after her royalty payments were challenged.

According to the lawsuit, Cher argued that her 1978 divorce settlement with Sonny Bono guaranteed her a 50% share of the royalties generated by their music catalogue. She alleged that Mary Bono had attempted to terminate those royalty rights under U.S. copyright law, depriving her of income she was legally entitled to receive.

The dispute centred on whether Cher’s contractual rights established through the divorce agreement could continue despite copyright termination provisions. Cher maintained that the divorce settlement remained valid and enforceable, while Mary Bono challenged those claims.

In May 2024, the court ruled in Cher’s favour on the central issue. The judge found that she was entitled to unpaid royalty payments and awarded her more than $418,000 in damages for royalties that had been withheld.

Following that victory, Cher sought to recover the legal costs she had accumulated while pursuing the case. In January 2026, she filed a request asking the court to award her $1,023,605.30 in attorney’s fees.

Her legal team argued that the case involved a common set of facts across multiple claims and counterclaims, making it unnecessary to separate the legal costs for each issue individually. They also contended that any work related to Mary Bono’s partially successful counterclaim represented only a minimal portion of the overall litigation.

However, the judge rejected Cher’s request for attorney’s fees in a ruling issued on July 17. The court concluded that the case was fundamentally a contract dispute rather than one arising under federal copyright law. Because of that distinction, the judge determined that Cher was not entitled to recover her legal expenses from the opposing side.

As a result of the ruling, Cher will have to cover more than $1 million in attorney’s fees herself, despite winning the underlying royalties dispute. Court filings also indicated that approximately $10,000 in additional legal costs was expected to be incurred for her representation.

The case marks the latest chapter in a years-long legal battle involving the financial legacy of Sonny & Cher, one of the most influential entertainment duos of the 1960s and 1970s.

Cher and Sonny Bono rose to international fame with a string of hit songs before expanding into television with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which became one of the era’s most popular variety shows. Following their divorce and the end of their professional partnership, both continued with separate careers. Sonny Bono later entered politics, serving as mayor of Palm Springs before being elected to the U.S. Congress, where he remained until his death in 1998.

Their run demonstrated the experience and consistency of Pakistan’s senior tennis players against strong international opposition. Supreme Court orders early hearing of Imran’s me…

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday accepted a chamber appeal filed by former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The court directed that his petition be fixed for hearing before a Supreme Court bench at the earliest. Imran Khan has requested the court to order his transfer from Adiala Jail to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment. He has also sought permission for regular meetings with his family members, personal physicians and legal counsel. In addition, he wants his medical reports to be shared with his family. The appeal challenged an earlier decision by the Supreme Court Registrar, who had returned the petitions after raising objections. The Registrar’s Office said the petitions were incomplete because they did not include a signed power of attorney. During Friday’s proceedings, Advocate Uzair Karamat Bhandari appeared before Chief Justice Yahya Afridi in chambers on behalf of Imran Khan. After hearing the arguments, the chief justice declared the Registrar’s objections ineffective and directed the legal team to submit a signed power of attorney. The Registrar’s Office was also instructed to assign a regular case number to the petition so it could be listed for hearing without unnecessary delay. The Supreme Court further ordered that a separate petition filed by Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, should be heard together with his own case. In the appeal, Imran Khan argued that the Registrar had exceeded his administrative powers by deciding the maintainability of the petition. His legal team maintained that such questions should be decided by judges because they involve constitutional and legal interpretation rather than administrative scrutiny. The petition also requested that Imran Khan be examined by doctors of his own choice. The names included Dr Khurram Mirza, Dr Asim Yusuf, Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Samina Niazi. It further asked the court to order his immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital for a detailed medical examination and treatment. The petition also sought uninterrupted access to his personal doctors, family members and lawyers during his imprisonment and treatment. Dr Uzma Khan has also challenged an Islamabad High Court ruling that refused to order Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital. She also questioned the decision denying his family access to his medical information and visits by his personal physicians. In her petition, Dr Uzma said Imran Khan and his wife are currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, while his two sons live abroad. She said she is his closest immediate family member in Pakistan and, as a medical doctor, is deeply concerned about his health. She argued that she has the legal standing to pursue the case on his behalf. Imran Khan has remained in custody since August 2023. He is serving a 14-year prison sentence in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. He is also receiving treatment for right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), an eye condition that was diagnosed earlier this year. His medical treatment has become a major political issue in recent months. Opposition leaders have repeatedly accused the government of failing to ensure proper medical care and denying him access to his personal doctors. They have also demanded his transfer to Shifa International Hospital

Paris Jackson reveals what Michael Jackson was rea…

Paris Jackson is giving fans a rare look at the private relationship she shared with her late father, Michael Jackson. During a recent appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, the singer and actress opened up about growing up as the daughter of one of the most famous entertainers in the world. While much of her childhood was surrounded by intense public attention, Paris said her experience with her father was far more personal and ordinary behind closed doors. (Page Six) Paris described Michael as a “funny guy” and recalled having a particularly close bond with him. She has also previously called her father her “best friend,” emphasizing that their relationship was deeply personal rather than simply a connection between a famous musician and his daughter. (E! Online) Her comments offer a different perspective on the man the world knew as the King of Pop. For Paris, Michael was first and foremost her dad. Growing up, however, came with unusual rules. Paris and her brothers, Prince and Bigi, were raised with a strong emphasis on education, chores and discipline. Fun activities were often treated as rewards after they completed their responsibilities. Despite living at Neverland Ranch, Paris said the famous amusement attractions were not simply there for her and her siblings to enjoy whenever they wanted. (Page Six) The family also took unusual measures to protect the children’s privacy. Paris and her brothers sometimes wore masks when they went out in public with their father. She explained that the masks allowed them to experience everyday activities without being immediately recognized as Michael Jackson’s children. (Page Six) That secrecy was important because Paris did not initially understand just how enormous her father’s fame was. As a child, the world she knew was centered around her family, making Michael’s superstar status seem normal. Michael died in June 2009 when Paris was only 11. His death dramatically changed her life, and she has spoken openly about how difficult the years afterward became. Still, she has continued to protect the private memories she shares with her father. Earlier this year, Paris explained that she no longer feels obligated to publicly discuss her relationship with Michael or post tributes for the world to see. She said their bond is personal and does not belong to anyone else. (E! Online) Her latest revelations reinforce that message. Behind the headlines, enormous fame and public scrutiny, Paris remembers Michael simply as her father — a funny man, a strict parent and, most importantly, her best friend.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam expressed his delight after his side secured a convincing victory over the West Indies in the second Test, praising the team’s all-round performance and highlighting the contributions of Abdullah Shafique and the spin bowling attack. Speaking after the match, Babar said every victory brings satisfaction and reflects the collective effort of the entire squad. He credited Abdullah Shafique’s outstanding innings and the disciplined performance of Pakistan’s two spinners as the key factors behind the team’s success. The Pakistan skipper revealed that the team management made four changes to the playing XI after carefully assessing the pitch conditions before the match. According to Babar, the surface resembled the type of wickets commonly seen in Pakistan, prompting the decision to strengthen the team accordingly. He added that the coaching staff and players worked together to finalize the changes, believing the selected combination would be better suited to the conditions. Babar also praised the pre-series training camp, saying it played a vital role in preparing the players both physically and mentally for the challenges of the series. The captain emphasized that the camp helped improve the team’s readiness and allowed players to adapt more effectively to match situations. He noted that thorough preparation was reflected in the disciplined performances throughout the Test. Player of the Match Abdullah Shafique, who scored an impressive 184 runs, also shared his thoughts after the victory. The opener said returning to form felt like starting his cricket career all over again, describing the innings as an important milestone in his comeback. Shafique acknowledged that Pakistan’s batting unit had fallen short of expectations in several recent Test matches, making his performance even more meaningful. He explained that he had been waiting patiently for an opportunity to contribute significantly to the team and was determined to make the most of it when the chance arrived. The right-handed batter added that his primary focus throughout the innings was to help Pakistan secure victory rather than concentrate on personal milestones. His composed knock laid the foundation for Pakistan’s dominant position in the match and earned widespread praise from teammates and cricket analysts. The victory provides Pakistan with valuable momentum and confidence as the team continues its Test campaign. With strong contributions from both experienced players and emerging stars, Pakistan will aim to build on this performance and maintain its winning form in the remainder of the series against the West Indies.
