QUETTA: The Balochistan cabinet has approved several major measures aimed at improving security, governance, education and public services across the province.

One of the key decisions was to declare the entire province a regular police area following the integration of the Levies Force into the police system.

The decisions were taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Wednesday.

The meeting reviewed several matters linked to law and order, development, administrative reforms and public welfare.

The cabinet also approved the third phase of the Chief Minister Scholarship Programme. Under the programme, 300 children of registered workers from Balochistan will receive admission to a quality boarding school in Islamabad.

The initiative aims to provide better educational opportunities to children of workers and help them build stronger prospects for the future.

The cabinet approved the appointment of Superintendent of Police Nabeel Ahmed as chief operating officer of the Balochistan Safe City Authority.

It also approved the establishment of a Provincial Parole Board on the recommendation of the Home Department.

A new police station was approved for Hub Marble City. The move is aimed at improving security in the growing industrial and commercial area.

The cabinet also approved a Service Level Agreement for the Quetta Safe City Project. The project will support the expansion of modern surveillance systems and technology-based policing in the provincial capital.

Several decisions were also taken to strengthen local government institutions.

Union Council Mesi Zai and Union Council Mai Zai were upgraded to municipal committees. The cabinet also approved a new Municipal Committee in Gulistan.

The measures are intended to improve administrative services and strengthen local governance.

For improved planning of development schemes, the cabinet approved the Balochistan Planning Manual.

The meeting also endorsed the Balochistan Child Protection Rules 2026. The rules are aimed at strengthening safeguards for children and improving their welfare across the province.

The cabinet approved amendments to the Balochistan Cadet Colleges Act 2026. It also extended the contract of the prosecutor general for another two years.

Another major decision involved approval of the Balochistan Hybrid Weighted Procurement Policy 2026. The policy is intended to improve transparency and efficiency in government procurement.

The cabinet also approved a financing proposal for the Harnai-Sibi Road Project.

Other decisions included approval of the Gwadar Development Authority Service Rules 2024 and the creation of a new tehsil and subdivision in Nasirabad district.

Officials said the administrative changes would help improve public service delivery and make development planning more effective.

The meeting began with prayers for security personnel and civilians who lost their lives in recent incidents.

Cabinet members paid tribute to those who died and expressed sympathy with their families.

Speaking at the meeting, Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said his government was focused on improving law and order across Balochistan.

    Iran threatens action over US economic support

    Iran’s National Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei has warned that the interests of countries assisting the United States in its economic war against Iran could be targeted. In an interview, Major General Mohsen Rezaei urged Iran’s neighbouring countries not to cooperate with Washington against Tehran. He warned that Iran could consider them hostile if they joined the US economic campaign. Rezaei said Iran did not want to escalate the conflict. However, he warned that any neighbouring country supporting the economic war could face attacks on its interests. He also threatened to prevent even a single drop of oil from passing through the Persian Gulf or the Strait of Hormuz. He said other routes used to import oil through the Persian Gulf could also be targeted. Rezaei further warned that locations linked to Iranian opposition groups could also come under attack if the United States continued meeting groups opposed to the Iranian government. According to Rezaei, the US had expected to end the conflict within a few days and take control of Iran’s oil and gas resources. He claimed that around 1,200 oil tankers had become unusable during the conflict, affecting 15 per cent of the global fleet. He said Tehran should reconsider its approach to the conflict and its diplomatic engagement with the international community. Rezaei accused Washington of failing to honour its commitments. Rezaei said Iran was no longer the same country it was before the conflict. He described new military appointments by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei as a sign that Iran was preparing for war. He added that the perception of the United States among Iranian youth had also changed. According to him, many young Iranians no longer view America as a country committed to peace. Rezaei accused Washington of betraying negotiations, diplomacy and agreements it had signed. He also warned that US policies could encourage more countries to seek nuclear weapons. He criticised US President Donald Trump and claimed that the world had begun viewing Iran differently. Rezaei said Iran would change its approach to warfare and use the lessons learned from the current conflict in any future war. Asked about the Makkah agreement involving Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, Rezaei said it indicated that the United States had informed those countries of its intention to leave the region. On former Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, Rezaei said those who believed his return would turn Iran into a “paradise” should reconsider their view. He claimed that bringing Pahlavi back to power could instead lead to Iran being divided into five parts.

    Turkish firm to begin offshore drilling in Pakista…

    Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has said Turkish Petroleum will soon begin offshore drilling in Pakistan’s territorial waters, a move he described as a potential boost for foreign investment in the country’s energy sector. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, Malik said Pakistan currently imports nearly 90% of its energy needs. Domestic oil production stands at around 70,000 barrels per day, while the country’s daily demand is close to 500,000 barrels. The minister stressed the need to speed up oil and gas exploration within the country to reduce dependence on costly energy imports. Malik said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had tasked an international company with developing a comprehensive roadmap for Pakistan’s energy sector. The plan is expected to reach the national leadership in the coming months. He also said the government had stopped the flow of circular debt and was working to settle outstanding liabilities accumulated under previous governments. The minister announced that LPG tenders would open on Monday and said the government had also made arrangements to issue new gas connections to consumers. Malik said Pakistan’s next priority after recent strategic and diplomatic achievements was sustainable economic growth. He described the Makkah defence agreement as a source of national pride and said Pakistan had strengthened its position as a regional security provider. He added that cooperation among Saudi Arabia’s economic strength, Turkiye’s technological expertise and Pakistan’s defence capabilities could help promote regional stability. Discussing global energy pressures, Malik said the Iran-US conflict had created major challenges for international energy markets and pushed crude oil and petroleum product prices to unprecedented levels. Despite the pressure, he said the government maintained uninterrupted fuel supplies across the country and took steps to shield consumers from the full impact of higher international prices. Malik reiterated that the government would continue efforts to provide maximum relief to the public while working with limited financial resources.

    Sindh solar project to benefit 275,000 families

    Karachi: Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that the Sindh government’s Rs18.2 billion Solar Home System Project will provide clean and affordable energy to 275,000 deserving families across the province. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Memon said the initiative, launched under the guidance of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is a major step toward expanding access to renewable energy, particularly for low-income households and remote communities. According to the minister, the project will benefit 132,000 off-grid families living in areas without access to the national electricity network, while 143,000 on-grid families facing electricity-related challenges will also receive solar home systems. Each beneficiary family will be provided with a 180-watt solar panel, batteries, a central control unit, a charge controller, mobile charging facility, electric fans, and LED lights. The comprehensive package is designed to meet basic household energy needs while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources. Sharjeel Memon said the project is progressing rapidly, with more than 15,000 solar home system kits already distributed across various districts of Sindh. He added that the government aims to complete the distribution to all 275,000 eligible families by June 2027. The senior minister described the initiative as more than just an electricity project, saying it represents a significant welfare program aimed at improving the quality of life for economically disadvantaged families. He noted that access to reliable and clean energy would help reduce household expenses, improve living standards, and support sustainable development across the province. The Sindh government views the solar project as an important investment in renewable energy and social welfare, aligning with broader efforts to promote clean energy solutions and provide long-term relief to vulnerable communities.

    Heavy rain floods twin cities

    RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: Heavy rain early Friday inundated low-lying areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, disrupting daily life and causing concern among residents. Nullah Leh and all 15 major rainwater drains recorded medium-level flooding, while water up to three feet deep covered roads and streets in several low-lying neighbourhoods. Several underpasses across the twin cities also filled with rainwater, making roads difficult to navigate. The downpour brought cooler weather but also forced water into homes and shops, affecting routine activities. Dense black clouds, thunder and lightning continued as rain lashed the cities. The Meteorological Department recorded 65 millimetres of rain in Saidpur, 17mm in Golra, 8mm in Bokra, 19mm at PMD, 17mm in Shamsabad, 7mm in Kacheri, 11mm in Pirwadhai, 9mm in Gawalmandi and 13mm in New Katarian. WASA Managing Director Azizullah Khan said heavy rain had continued since early morning and that the authority had placed the twin cities on high alert and declared a rain emergency. WASA teams and heavy machinery moved into vulnerable areas to clear rainwater and keep roads open. Machinery was deployed at Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk underpass, Murree Road and low-lying parts of Sadiqabad.
