President approves military and civil honours

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved several summaries sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, including military honours for 1,172 personnel of the armed forces and civil armed forces.

The approved honours recognise the services and contributions of personnel from various ranks and institutions. The awards will acknowledge their dedication, professionalism and service to the country.

President Zardari also approved the summoning of separate sessions of Parliament on August 17. The National Assembly will meet at 5pm, while the Senate will convene at 4pm.

In another significant decision, the president approved a special 100-day remission in the sentences of prisoners on the occasions of Independence Day and Eid Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ. The concession will provide eligible prisoners with relief in their sentences under the applicable rules and conditions.

President Zardari further approved national civil awards for citizens from various fields in recognition of their outstanding contributions and services. The honours cover individuals who have made notable contributions in their respective areas and brought recognition to the country.

The approvals form part of the president’s constitutional responsibilities and reflect the government’s efforts to recognise public service, honour outstanding contributions and provide relief to eligible prisoners on important national and religious occasions.

He maintained that the public should not have to bear what he termed excessive charges and levies. He further said Jamaat-e-Islami had launched sit-ins in all four provinces and would continue its protests until the government accepted its demands. The ongoing Karachi demonstration focuses on petroleum levies, electricity bills and broader public concerns. The party has vowed to continue the sit-in at the Governor House as part of its campaign for relief from rising living costs.

    Lahore – Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem has taken notice of the incident in which three women were killed and one was injured in firing over an old enmity at the makeshift tents of nomads in Samanabad, within the jurisdiction of Airport Police Station, Faisalabad. He has sought a report from RPO Faisalabad. IG Punjab has directed CPO Faisalabad to ensure the immediate arrest of the suspects involved in the firing, stating that all available resources should be utilized to apprehend the accused. Punjab Police spokesperson said that senior police officers and forensic teams reached the crime scene and collected evidence. CPO Faisalabad said that special teams have been constituted to arrest the suspects and they will be apprehended soon.

According to an official notification issued by the Directorate, the use of cigarettes, vapes, nicotine pouches, paan, and gutka has been strictly prohibited within college premises. The ban will come into effect immediately, with college principals instructed to ensure compliance and maintain a tobacco-free environment inside their institutions. Authorities have directed college administrations to take necessary steps to prevent students and staff from using prohibited substances on campus. The Directorate of College Education has also contacted deputy commissioners to help control the sale and use of tobacco products and drugs around college areas. The move aims to extend monitoring beyond campuses and reduce access to such substances near educational institutions. Officials said the decision is part of efforts to promote student health and prevent the growing use of harmful substances among young people. College administrations will be responsible for implementing the new restrictions and taking action against violations.     KARACHI: Signs of reconciliation have begun to emerge within the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) after a violent confrontation at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters, with senior leaders initiating behind-the-scenes contacts to ease tensions and restore unity. Two days after the clash, senior party figures, including Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and Anees Qaimkhani, visited the party’s central office to discuss organizational affairs. Speaking to reporters, Mustafa Kamal rejected speculation of an internal power struggle, insisting that the party remained united despite recent events. According to sources, communication has been established between the two rival camps—one led by Mustafa Kamal and the other by Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui—in an effort to defuse tensions. A joint press conference is reportedly being considered as part of efforts to present a united front, although party leaders have neither confirmed nor denied the possibility. Notably, close associates of Siddiqui, who also serves as the party’s convener, did not attend the meeting at the headquarters. Despite the passage of two days since the confrontation, which reportedly involved a physical altercation and aerial firing, police have yet to register a First Information Report (FIR). Officials said no faction of the party has formally approached law enforcement to lodge a complaint. If neither side files a case, authorities are expected to register one on behalf of the state. Police sources said a draft FIR has already been prepared and is awaiting approval from senior officials before being formally registered. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have carried out raids and detained several MQM-P office-bearers and workers suspected of involvement in the violence. Officials said those currently in custody could face formal arrest once the FIR is registered, as investigations into the incident continue.
