Pakistan rejects Indian claims, calls allegations …

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has rejected allegations by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah linking Islamabad to the arrest of alleged terror suspects in India, describing the accusations as part of a politically motivated campaign against Pakistan.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said the allegations were baseless and appeared aimed at shifting attention away from India’s own internal security challenges. He accused New Delhi of using anti-Pakistan rhetoric for domestic political purposes.

The remarks followed claims by Shah that Indian security agencies had detained more than 200 suspected militants allegedly connected to Pakistan during a nationwide crackdown across 14 states on August 12. Shah said the suspects were linked to what he described as the Shahzad Bhatti Network and alleged that the arrests had prevented planned attacks.

Rejecting the claims, Andrabi said Pakistan had repeatedly faced accusations that he described as part of an ongoing campaign to portray Islamabad as responsible for security problems inside India.

The spokesperson also levelled counter-allegations against New Delhi, accusing India of suppressing minorities and dissent at home while allegedly supporting terrorism and destabilising activities abroad. He maintained that such accusations could not divert international attention from what Pakistan considers India’s involvement in terrorism and subversive activities.

Andrabi referred to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was convicted by a Pakistani military court and remains in Pakistani custody, as evidence of Islamabad’s longstanding allegations of Indian involvement in activities against Pakistan.

Pakistan called on the international community to reject what it termed unfounded allegations and to hold India accountable for what Islamabad describes as state-sponsored terrorism and destabilising activities in the region.

Moreover, Pakistan has strongly rejected what it described as India’s attempt to reshape the history of the 2025 military confrontation through a recently produced documentary on “Operation Sindoor,” calling the production a highly dramatized and factually distorted portrayal of events.

In a statement, Pakistan said the documentary relied on selectively edited interviews, emotional narration and cinematic reconstructions to present a version of the conflict designed primarily for domestic political consumption. It argued that the production failed to provide an objective account of the military engagements and instead sought to portray a disputed outcome as an unequivocal Indian victory.

Pakistan also questioned the documentary’s chronology surrounding the Pahalgam incident of April 22, 2025. It said India had subsequently claimed that the alleged perpetrators of the incident were identified and eliminated on July 28, nearly three months after Operation Sindoor. Islamabad argued that this timeline raised questions about India’s assertion that the May 7 operation was specifically intended to punish those responsible for the Pahalgam attack.

The statement further rejected India’s claim of “100 percent mission success,” maintaining that Pakistani forces had effectively responded to the Indian offensive during what Pakistan refers to as Marka-e-Haq. Islamabad claimed that eight Indian military aircraft were shot down during the confrontation and said Pakistan later launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, targeting military installations with precision-guided rockets and missiles, precision air-launched munitions, loitering munitions and artillery.

Pakistan said the documentary itself contained admissions that undermined its portrayal of decisive Indian dominance. According to Islamabad, references by Indian military officials to Pakistani missile and drone activity, prolonged engagements along the Line of Control and the activation of Indian air-defence systems demonstrated that the confrontation involved significant military exchanges on both sides.

The Pakistani statement also challenged New Delhi’s account of how hostilities ended. It noted that the documentary acknowledged communication between the two countries’ Directors General of Military Operations and an agreed cessation of military activity. Islamabad said this account was inconsistent with portraying the conclusion of the conflict as an unconditional Indian military victory, particularly given the role of international diplomatic engagement in facilitating the ceasefire.

Pakistan further accused the documentary of presenting contradictory explanations for India’s approach to escalation. While the production reportedly emphasised surprise attacks, precision strikes and escalation dominance, it simultaneously portrayed India as deliberately restricting the scope of the conflict and offering Pakistan an opportunity to withdraw.

Islamabad described the documentary as an attempt to create a politically convenient narrative rather than an impartial military assessment. It maintained that cinematic reconstructions and official claims could not alter the chronology of events, the military engagements or the losses suffered during the confrontation.

Pakistan said it had no need to construct an alternative narrative around Marka-e-Haq, arguing that battlefield developments, diplomatic interactions and subsequent statements by Indian officials provided sufficient material for assessing the conflict.

Reaffirming its stated commitment to regional peace and stability, Pakistan said its armed forces remained prepared to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It warned that any future military escalation would receive a strong response, while asserting that no subsequent narrative or media production could change the actual course of events on the battlefield.

The election commission has now decided to hold the third phase in Bagh and Haveli districts. Under the earlier schedule, polling was planned for August 10. Voting was expected to take place across 11 seats in four districts of the Poonch division. The election authorities have now changed the plan. The new schedule will cover constituencies in Bagh and Haveli. The first two phases of the AJK elections have already been completed. The first phase was held on July 27 in the Mirpur Division. The second phase took place on August 2 in the Muzaffarabad Division. The elections are being closely watched because of the political contest between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party. The PML-N has emerged as the leading party in the first two phases. Its leaders have claimed that the party has secured enough support to form the next AJK government. In the second phase, voting was held in 21 constituencies. Nine seats were located in the Muzaffarabad Division. Twelve seats were reserved for Kashmiri refugees settled in different parts of Pakistan. According to unofficial and provisional results, the PML-N won 15 of the 21 seats. The PPP secured the remaining six seats. The PML-N had also performed strongly during the first phase. Unofficial results showed the party winning nine constituencies. The PPP won four seats. The election process has also been accompanied by allegations of irregularities and violence. The PPP has questioned the fairness of the elections and accused the authorities of failing to ensure a transparent process. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has strongly criticised the election process. He described the polls as unfair and alleged that violence and irregularities affected the voting. Bilawal also said the PPP would continue its political struggle despite the party’s performance in the elections. He claimed that the federal government would face political challenges in the future. The PML-N has rejected the allegations. PML-N leader and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah challenged the PPP to present evidence of electoral irregularities before the election commission. He said accusations should be supported by evidence. He also accused the PPP of promoting allegations of rigging from the beginning of the election process. The revised schedule has now shifted attention towards Bagh and Haveli. The election authorities are expected to provide further details about polling arrangements and the dates for voting in the postponed constituencies.

Araghchi says diplomacy possible if US changes course

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said a return to diplomacy with the United States remains possible, but Washington must first accept that its pressure-based approach will not work. Araghchi made the remarks on Friday after holding what he described as constructive and creative discussions with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Jassim Al Thani. The Iranian foreign minister said the United States should take steps to rebuild trust and engage Tehran through respectful dialogue. He also called on Washington to recognise Iran’s rights and honour commitments made under previous agreements. The comments come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly over sanctions, maritime restrictions and the future of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the US reached a 14-point memorandum of understanding in Islamabad in June through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar. The understanding included measures aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, removing a US naval blockade and beginning a 60-day negotiating process. Tehran has since accused Washington of failing to implement important parts of the agreement. Iranian officials have maintained that the Strait of Hormuz will not be fully reopened until the United States fulfils its commitments. The diplomatic dispute has also triggered a sharp exchange between Iranian and US officials. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf criticised US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after Bessent accused Tehran of spending large amounts of money abroad while Iranian citizens face economic difficulties. Ghalibaf rejected the criticism and argued that Washington should focus on its own domestic challenges rather than spending heavily on overseas military deployments and allies. The latest statements come as the United States maintains pressure on Iran and closely monitors maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. US Central Command said its forces had cleared sea mines from internationally recognised shipping lanes in the strait. Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said American military personnel from several branches had taken part in the operation. According to US officials, American forces have helped commercial vessels pass through the waterway while also stopping ships accused of attempting to bypass the maritime blockade. Iran, however, disputes Washington’s position and has warned that continued economic and maritime restrictions could provoke retaliation. Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Tehran would target US economic interests if the blockade continued. He also claimed that Iran had managed to maintain significant oil exports and establish alternative routes despite restrictions. Rezaei further warned against any military advance toward Beirut or southern Lebanon, calling the area a red line for Iran.

Murkowski opposes Blanche, putting Trump’s AG pick at risk

WASHINGTON: Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has announced that she will vote against Todd Blanche’s nomination for US attorney general, dealing another setback to President Donald Trump’s choice and leaving his confirmation prospects increasingly uncertain. Murkowski’s decision makes her the second Republican senator to oppose Blanche, following Senator Susan Collins. With the Republican majority in the Senate already facing a narrow margin, even one more GOP defection could put the nomination in serious jeopardy. Murkowski said concerns surrounding an $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund played a major role in her decision. Although the fund was rescinded while Blanche’s nomination was under consideration, she questioned whether it could be restored if Blanche is confirmed. “The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said, adding that she did not have sufficient confidence that Blanche would fulfil that role. Her opposition adds to a growing political challenge for Blanche, who is seeking Senate approval to lead the Justice Department. The nomination has faced scrutiny over questions surrounding the department’s independence and its handling of politically sensitive matters. The situation is particularly delicate because Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is absent from the Senate. That leaves Blanche with little room for further defections, while attention has turned to Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who has yet to make his position clear. Murkowski, a longtime Alaska senator known for occasionally breaking with her party, said she had met with Blanche several times and viewed him as capable. However, she ultimately concluded that his nomination raised concerns she could not overlook. Her decision could force Senate Republican leaders to intensify efforts to secure support for Blanche before the chamber’s August recess. For Trump, a failed confirmation would represent a significant political setback in his effort to shape the Justice Department with his preferred leadership. The Senate battle is now expected to remain closely watched as Republicans work to determine whether Blanche can secure enough votes.
