Google Maps tests new Power Saving Mode for low battery

If you use Google Maps and notice that your smartphone’s battery is about to die, you probably know how frustrating that situation can be. However, this problem may soon be resolved.

According to a report by Android Authority, Google is working on a new feature called Power Saving Mode for Google Maps. The purpose of this feature is to allow Google Maps to continue working for a longer period even when the phone’s battery is close to running out.

The feature was spotted in a new beta version of the Google Maps app for Android devices. According to the report, when users switch to this power-saving mode, the colourful user interface of Google Maps will change into a simple black-and-white view.

Several details on Google Maps will disappear leaving only essential navigation information such as the next turn and the remaining travel time. The report further stated that the screen will switch to a monochrome display in this mode.

Street names and traffic colors will disappear while the amount of on-screen text will also be reduced to help extend battery life. The process of switching to Power Saving Mode is also somewhat unusual.

According to the report, the mode can be activated by pressing the phone’s physical power button while Google Maps is in navigation mode. Google has not yet officially announced the Power Saving Mode feature.

Therefore, it is difficult to say when the feature will officially become available to all users. For now, the feature remains hidden in the beta code and Google may make further changes to it before its official release.

  • 29 US states sue Meta over social media’s impact on children

More than half of the US states have jointly taken Meta, the company that owns apps such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to court. The trial against Meta is set to begin on August 18. The US states have accused the parent company of Facebook and Instagram of designing its apps in ways that can be addictive and harmful to young people. The case is being heard in a federal court in California and is expected to continue for six to eight weeks. The jury will hear testimony from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri and former Meta employee Arturo Bejar who has since become a whistleblower regarding the company. The lawsuit filed by the 29 states is being led by attorneys general from California, Colorado, New Jersey and Kentucky. The states originally filed the lawsuit in October 2023 submitting 233 pages of documents to the court. They accused Meta of collecting data from children under the age of 13 without parental consent allegedly violating federal and state laws. The lawsuit claims that Meta refused to stop the use of harmful features because its primary objective was to generate profits. The case could have serious consequences for the future of the social media company as the states are seeking $200 billion in damages, an amount equivalent to Meta’s annual revenue in 2025. The states are also demanding that Meta redesign its apps to make them safer for children. Meta, on the other hand, has rejected all the allegations. The company claims that the states filed the lawsuit to obtain billions of dollars rather than based on facts or the law. In a statement, Meta said the case is important for the states but described their allegations as unfounded and their financial demands as inappropriate. The company also said that the attorneys do not have sufficient evidence to support their claims. According to state attorneys, Meta has developed features designed to keep people spending as much time as possible on its apps with young users being among those most affected. The trial comes shortly after a similar case in New Mexico where a court recently imposed a $567 million fine. A similar lawsuit is also currently being heard in the US state of Tennessee.

EU fines Google $1 billion over competition violations

The European Union has imposed a heavy fine on Google for allegedly using its dominance in the search engine sector to suppress other companies. According to a statement issued by the European Commission, Google illegally used its dominant position in the search engine market to reduce competition. The statement said that Google has been fined €890 million (around $1 billion) for this violation. The move is expected to increase trade tensions between the European Union and the United States as the Trump administration has warned of possible retaliatory measures and described EU trade policies as “unfair.” According to the European Commission, Google unfairly used its dominant search engine position to promote its own services including shopping, travel, gaming and other platforms reaching more users. The commission stated that Google placed its own services higher in search results while pushing competing services lower. The statement further explained that under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, technology companies cannot show such biased behavior toward their own services and must follow transparent, fair and non-discriminatory policies. The European Commission also accused Google of unfairly preventing developers from informing users about alternative payment options on the Google Play Store as this could reduce Google’s service fees. This action was also considered a violation of the Digital Markets Act which aims to prevent large technology companies from establishing monopolies. According to the statement, Google must comply with the decision within 60 days otherwise additional penalties may be imposed. On the other hand, Google said in a statement that the decision would harm European consumers. This is not the first time the European Union has fined Google. In 2018, the EU imposed a $4.7 billion fine on Google over the alleged abuse of its dominance in the Android mobile operating system market and Google’s final appeal against the decision was rejected. In 2017, Google was fined $2.8 billion for abusing its dominance in the search sector while in 2024 its final appeal was also rejected.

  • WhatsApp launches AI scam detection feature for users

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help protect users from scams. According to a report, the AI-powered scam detection feature is designed to help identify potentially fraudulent chats. The feature will use on-device AI to flag suspicious conversations while messages will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption. According to the report, the feature works by downloading a machine-learning model directly onto the user’s smartphone. The model analyzes WhatsApp messages from people whose phone numbers are not saved in the user’s contacts. It examines the conversation style and language to assess whether the interaction could potentially be a scam. If the system identifies a chat as potentially fraudulent, WhatsApp will display a warning to the user. The other person involved in the conversation will not be notified about the warning. After seeing the warning, users can choose to block or report the sender, continue the conversation or mark the chat as trusted. Once a chat is marked as trusted, WhatsApp will stop displaying scam alerts for that conversation. According to the company, the AI model has been trained to identify fraudulent activity. Meta also stated that the AI model will not compromise users privacy and the company will not have access to users’ messages.

Google marks Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day with special Doodle

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day has received a colourful digital tribute from Google, which replaced its familiar homepage logo with a special Doodle inspired by the country’s national colours. The special artwork appeared on Google’s Pakistan homepage on Friday, August 14, adding a digital touch to celebrations taking place across the country and among Pakistani communities around the world. Instead of the company’s usual multicoloured “Google” logo, users visiting the search engine in Pakistan were greeted with a design reflecting the green and white colours of the national flag. The simple but eye-catching tribute has brought Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations to one of the world’s most visited digital platforms, allowing millions of users to see the national-day themed artwork while using Google’s search service. A digital salute to Pakistan Google regularly creates special Doodles to mark national days, historic milestones, cultural occasions, achievements and notable personalities around the world. These temporary artworks replace or transform the company’s standard logo and often incorporate symbols associated with the occasion being commemorated. For Pakistan’s Independence Day this year, Google has continued that tradition with a design centred on the country’s national identity. The appearance of the Doodle comes as Pakistanis across the country celebrate August 14 with flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic songs, cultural events and public gatherings. From Islamabad and Lahore to Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta, streets, homes and public buildings have been decorated with the green and white colours of Pakistan. The digital tribute also gives the country’s large overseas community another reason to celebrate, with Pakistanis living in different parts of the world marking the occasion through social media, community events and family gatherings. Not Google’s first Pakistan tribute Google’s recognition of Pakistan’s Independence Day is not a new tradition. Over the years, the technology giant has marked Pakistan-related occasions with Doodles featuring elements of the country’s history, culture, architecture, art and natural heritage. Past designs have highlighted national symbols, historic landmarks and distinctive aspects of Pakistani identity, bringing them to a global online audience. The Doodles have become more than simple changes to a search-page logo. For many users, they offer a brief visual reminder of an important national occasion while connecting local celebrations with the wider digital world. This year’s green-and-white design carries a similarly simple message: Pakistan’s Independence Day is being celebrated not only on streets and public squares but also across the digital landscape. As the country marks 79 years of independence, Google’s colourful tribute has added a modern, global dimension to a day rooted in Pakistan’s history, identity and national pride.
