Araghchi says diplomacy possible if US changes course

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said a return to diplomacy with the United States remains possible, but Washington must first accept that its pressure-based approach will not work.

Araghchi made the remarks on Friday after holding what he described as constructive and creative discussions with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Jassim Al Thani.

The Iranian foreign minister said the United States should take steps to rebuild trust and engage Tehran through respectful dialogue. He also called on Washington to recognise Iran’s rights and honour commitments made under previous agreements.

The comments come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly over sanctions, maritime restrictions and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran and the US reached a 14-point memorandum of understanding in Islamabad in June through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar. The understanding included measures aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, removing a US naval blockade and beginning a 60-day negotiating process.

Tehran has since accused Washington of failing to implement important parts of the agreement. Iranian officials have maintained that the Strait of Hormuz will not be fully reopened until the United States fulfils its commitments.

The diplomatic dispute has also triggered a sharp exchange between Iranian and US officials.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf criticised US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after Bessent accused Tehran of spending large amounts of money abroad while Iranian citizens face economic difficulties.

Ghalibaf rejected the criticism and argued that Washington should focus on its own domestic challenges rather than spending heavily on overseas military deployments and allies.

The latest statements come as the United States maintains pressure on Iran and closely monitors maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.

US Central Command said its forces had cleared sea mines from internationally recognised shipping lanes in the strait. Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said American military personnel from several branches had taken part in the operation.

According to US officials, American forces have helped commercial vessels pass through the waterway while also stopping ships accused of attempting to bypass the maritime blockade.

Iran, however, disputes Washington’s position and has warned that continued economic and maritime restrictions could provoke retaliation.

Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Tehran would target US economic interests if the blockade continued. He also claimed that Iran had managed to maintain significant oil exports and establish alternative routes despite restrictions.

Rezaei further warned against any military advance toward Beirut or southern Lebanon, calling the area a red line for Iran.

Utility provider Avista reported that around 60,000 customers remain without power because of fire damage and precautionary shutdowns designed to reduce additional risks. One of the largest active blazes is the Kaiser Canyon Fire in northeastern Washington. The wildfire has expanded to nearly 134,000 acres and continues to challenge firefighters because of difficult terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions. Fire crews from more than a dozen US states have joined local emergency responders to strengthen firefighting operations. National Guard personnel have also been mobilised to assist with evacuation efforts, logistics and emergency response. Authorities are using helicopters, aircraft, bulldozers and other heavy equipment to slow the spread of the fires and establish containment lines. Emergency teams are working around the clock to protect homes, businesses and critical infrastructure. Residents in affected communities have been urged to follow evacuation orders without delay and remain informed through official emergency updates. Officials warned that weather conditions could continue to fuel the fires in the coming days.     Policeman martyred in Swat anti-terror operation

    A police constable was martyred during an ongoing operation against suspected terrorists in Swat’s Kabal tehsil, police said on Wednesday. The operation is being carried out in the Shalkho Sar area. Security forces launched the action after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in the region. According to Swat police, Elite Force Constable Gulfam embraced martyrdom while fighting the militants on Tuesday night. Police said he showed courage during the operation and sacrificed his life in the line of duty. The operation is being conducted jointly by the Counter-Terrorism Department, Swat Police and Upper Swat Police. Senior police officials are supervising the operation. The Malakand regional police officer and the district police officers of Swat and Upper Swat are overseeing the security action. Police said security personnel have surrounded the area where the terrorists are believed to be present. The suspects have reportedly been confined to the Shalkho Sar area. Officials also reported that the operation may have caused heavy casualties among the terrorists. However, further details about the number of casualties were not immediately available. The security forces continue to search the area as the operation remains underway. Officials are taking measures to prevent the suspects from escaping. Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan said the police force remains committed to maintaining peace in the region. He said law enforcement personnel would continue their efforts to protect the public. He also stressed that police would remain prepared to make sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. The latest incident comes as security concerns continue to affect parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Reports in recent months have pointed to the presence of militants in Kabal and Matta tehsils of Swat.
