Pope Leo heads to France with AI, apologies for clergy abuse on agenda

VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo leaves on Friday, September 25, for a weekend visit to France, where he is hoping to repair the Catholic Church’s standing after abuse scandals and is expected to renew calls for global rules on AI development while laying out a vision for Europe’s future.

Leo is likely to draw large crowds on the September 25 to 28 visit, which includes stops in Paris, at the famed Catholic shrine in Lourdes, in the southwest, and in Metz, a city on the German border central to the founding of the European Union.

Some 600,000 people have registered to join an outdoor Mass in central Paris with Leo on Saturday, September 26, with throngs expected to stretch down the famed Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

“Pope Leo’s visit to France has sparked a real tidal wave” of interest, retired French Bishop Marc Stenger told Reuters.

AI at top of papal agenda

Leading Leo’s agenda on Friday are speeches to President Emmanuel Macron and other French leaders at the Élysée Palace and to staff at the headquarters of the UN culture and education body, UNESCO, which is facing budget shortfalls after US President Donald Trump withdrew from the agency in 2025.

The first US pope attracted Trump’s ire earlier this year after criticizing the Iran war.

For Pope Leo, the risk of an AI apocalypse is a major concern

Leo, who has made the risks spurred by AI a major concern of his papacy and has called on world leaders for global rules to oversee the industry, is expected to address the issue at UNESCO.

In a speech at the Vatican on Thursday, the pope said AI could benefit humanity, but has introduced “new dangers to security and international peace.” He urged global leaders to “govern wisely” in overseeing the technology.

Leo’s visit comes as Catholic leaders in France have been at odds with the government over the 2024 enshrining of a right to abortion in the French constitution, a world first, and the passage of a law earlier this year legalizing assisted dying for adults with incurable illnesses.

The Catholic Church teaches that all human life is sacred and opposes abortion, assisted dying and capital punishment.

Leo will also lead a prayer service in Paris on Friday at the restored Notre-Dame cathedral, in the first visit by a pope since a devastating fire nearly destroyed the Gothic masterpiece in 2019.

Pope to meet abuse survivors

Leo is the first pope to make an official visit to France in nearly 20 years. Local Church leaders hope the trip will repair the Church’s standing after a crushing 2021 report found that some 330,000 French children had been abused by Catholic clergy and lay leaders over seven decades.

French bishops have since introduced compensation and safeguarding measures, but survivors have continued to press Church leaders to demonstrate accountability.

“Leo bears the immense responsibility of ‘declaring enough is enough,’” Alain Esquerre, 66, a spokesperson for victims at the Notre-Dame de Bétharram Catholic institution, told Reuters.

The pope will meet seven French victims of abuse by Catholic clergy on Sunday in Lourdes. The Vatican, which usually only issues statements about the pope’s meetings with abuse victims afterwards, has not provided further details.

Leo’s French tour will culminate in Metz on Sunday, September 27, with a speech on “the roots of Europe for peace and unity.”

Macron has invited leaders from all 27 EU member states to attend but it is unclear who will come. – Rappler.com

Why did Trump share Muhammad Ali’s iconic fi…

US President Donald Trump has ignited widespread debate on social media after sharing footage of Muhammad Ali’s legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing match against George Foreman, prompting users to speculate about the message behind the post. The iconic 1974 heavyweight title fight is regarded as one of the greatest contests in boxing history. Trump’s decision to post the famous bout quickly attracted attention, with many users questioning whether it carried a political message related to ongoing tensions with Iran or was aimed at domestic American politics. The White House has not issued any statement explaining the context of Trump’s post, leaving room for widespread speculation online. The “Rumble in the Jungle,” held in Kinshasa, then Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), remains one of the most memorable moments in sporting history. During the fight, George Foreman appeared dominant in the early rounds, repeatedly landing powerful punches while Ali relied on his now-famous “rope-a-dope” strategy. Instead of engaging aggressively, Ali absorbed Foreman’s attacks while leaning against the ropes, conserving energy and allowing his opponent to tire himself out. By the eighth round, Foreman had slowed significantly, giving Ali the opportunity to launch a stunning counterattack that ended with a dramatic knockout victory. Trump’s decision to revisit the historic fight has divided social media users. Some interpreted the post as a symbolic message about patience, strategy and turning the tide against a stronger opponent. Others argued it may have been intended to comment on current geopolitical developments, while another group believed it was linked to US political dynamics ahead of upcoming policy battles. Despite the growing online discussion, Trump has not clarified the purpose of sharing the video. As speculation continues, the post has once again brought Muhammad Ali’s legendary triumph back into the global spotlight, reminding sports fans why the “Rumble in the Jungle” remains one of the most iconic victories in boxing history.

Iran-linked hackers shut UK power plant for four d…

LONDON: Hackers linked to the Iranian regime reportedly forced a small British power-generating facility to shut down for four days last month in what could be the first known successful cyberattack of its kind against a UK energy site. The incident, reported by The Telegraph, has raised fresh concerns about the ability of state-linked cyber groups to move beyond digital intrusion and cause disruption to physical infrastructure. However, British officials stressed that the affected facility was small and that the wider electricity system was never at risk. The identity and location of the facility have not been disclosed for security reasons. According to reports, staff spent several days working to restore the plant and return its systems to normal operation. The attack did not cause any significant impact on Britain’s overall electricity generation or supply. A government source described the facility as extremely small compared with the capacity of the national grid and said it did not fall within the category of major generators required to report certain cyber incidents. Despite the limited disruption, the incident has attracted attention because of what it demonstrates about the evolving cyber threat. If confirmed, it would represent a significant step for hackers associated with Iran, showing that they were able to penetrate an energy facility and temporarily interrupt its operations. The precise method used to gain access to the plant has not been publicly disclosed. Nor has the British government formally attributed the attack to a specific Iranian hacking group. The National Cyber Security Centre, which works with organisations to protect critical infrastructure, declined to comment on the individual incident. British authorities have nevertheless taken the incident seriously. Government officials reportedly briefed senior executives at power companies and provided advice on how operators should respond to the growing threat of cyberattacks. The incident comes amid heightened concern in Western countries over cyber operations linked to Iran, Russia, China and North Korea. British cybersecurity officials have repeatedly warned organisations to strengthen their defences as geopolitical tensions increase. The attack also reportedly occurred around the same period as cyber incidents targeting water infrastructure in several US states, although the relationship between the incidents has not been established publicly. For Britain’s energy sector, the episode serves as a warning even though the national grid remained unaffected. Smaller generators and industrial facilities can still provide potential entry points for attackers seeking to test their capabilities. The immediate disruption may have been limited, but the incident has intensified scrutiny of Britain’s energy cybersecurity. Authorities now face the challenge of ensuring that a temporary shutdown at a small facility does not become a blueprint for attacks against larger and more strategically important infrastructure.

Cambridge to review hiring after Arday resignation

The University of Cambridge has announced a review of its procedures for appointing senior academics following the resignation of Professor Jason Arday amid allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding parts of his academic record. Cambridge said an ongoing investigation into Arday’s qualifications, previous appointments and tenure would inform the wider review of how senior academic positions are filled. Arday, a professor of sociology of education and fellow of Jesus College, stepped down after allegations emerged concerning his academic work and claims made about his professional background. He has rejected accusations of deliberate plagiarism and denied fabricating his achievements. The controversy has prompted calls from academics for an independent investigation into how Arday was appointed to a senior position at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Priyamvada Gopal, a Cambridge professor who is among those calling for an independent inquiry, said the controversy had caused significant reputational damage to the university. She argued that Cambridge should not investigate itself and urged the involvement of academics from outside the institution. Cambridge said it was aware of the concerns surrounding the case and would continue examining the circumstances of Arday’s appointment and tenure. Jesus College welcomed the university’s decision to review its appointment procedures. The college said Arday’s position as a fellow depended on his university appointment and that it relied on Cambridge to verify academic credentials. The University of Glasgow, where Arday served as Professor of Sociology of Education from January 2022 to March 2023, has also launched its own review. The university said the review would establish the facts surrounding his appointment and identify lessons for the future. The controversy began after US researcher Nathan Cofnas raised allegations that sections of Arday’s PhD dissertation had been copied from earlier academic works. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his doctorate, said it had investigated the plagiarism allegations last year and rejected them. The university maintained that position and said his PhD remains valid. Further questions have since been raised about some of Arday’s academic publications and claims on his CV. Some institutions where he reportedly claimed to have held academic positions have denied that he occupied those roles. Arday has acknowledged errors in his academic work but denied intentionally plagiarising material. He has suggested that autism and inadequate supervision during the early stages of his academic career may have contributed to mistakes. He has also rejected allegations that he fabricated his personal achievements and has previously argued that some of the criticism directed at him was racially motivated. The controversy has also raised questions about how allegations against Arday were handled. Times Higher Education reporter Jack Grove was investigated by the Metropolitan Police following a complaint of harassment after he contacted Arday about the plagiarism allegations. The investigation was later closed. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley subsequently apologised and said the complaint should have been screened out at an earlier stage. Attention has also turned to Arday’s forthcoming memoir, “Great and Unfortunate Things”, which is scheduled for publication next week. Arday previously claimed in an interview that he had received a £1.4 million advance for the memoir, although he did not specify the currency. Publishing industry figures have questioned the size of the alleged payment. Publisher Simon & Schuster has said it intends to proceed with publication. Reports have also identified differences between an earlier proposal for the memoir and the final manuscript, including changes to the timing and description of some events in Arday’s life.

Dameisha Beach: The World’s most crowded Beach

Dameisha Beach, located in Shenzhen, China, is often described as one of the most crowded beaches in the world. The reason behind its reputation is its extraordinary visitor numbers. Despite being only 1.8 kilometres (1.1 miles) long, the beach can attract nearly 200,000 people at a time during particularly busy periods, turning the popular seaside destination into a sea of people. Located in southeastern China, Dameisha Beach is one of Shenzhen’s most famous recreational destinations. Its relatively short stretch of sandy coastline becomes extremely crowded during weekends and public holidays, especially during the summer months. The sheer number of visitors has become such a major concern that local authorities have introduced measures to control the number of people entering the beach. The extent of the crowds can easily be understood by looking at reviews posted by visitors on travel platforms such as TripAdvisor. Some tourists have complained that the beach becomes so overcrowded that it is difficult even to reach the water. Instead of enjoying a peaceful day by the sea, visitors often find themselves surrounded by thousands of other people competing for space on the sand. Since Dameisha is a public beach, it is theoretically open to everyone. However, in recent years, authorities in Shenzhen have introduced restrictions during the peak season, generally from May to October. The number of visitors allowed to enter the beach can be limited to around 80,000 per day in an effort to prevent excessive overcrowding and maintain public safety.   A mandatory reservation system has also been introduced during busy periods. Visitors are required to make a reservation before travelling to the beach on their chosen date. The system allows authorities to monitor the number of people entering the area and prevent the beach from becoming dangerously overcrowded. Although a daily limit of 80,000 visitors may already sound enormous, reports indicate that the beach has witnessed even larger crowds on certain occasions. At times, as many as 200,000 people have reportedly gathered at the same time. With such a massive crowd occupying a relatively small area, simple activities such as walking, swimming or relaxing under the sun can become extremely difficult. One of the major factors contributing to Dameisha Beach’s popularity is its accessibility. The beach is well connected through public transportation, with several bus routes providing convenient access to the area. Even more importantly, a metro station is located directly opposite the beach, making it easy for large numbers of local residents and tourists to reach the destination without relying on private vehicles. Another major attraction is that entry to the beach is free. This makes Dameisha an affordable recreational option for both residents of Shenzhen and visitors from other areas. Its convenient location, free admission and easy access through public transportation have all contributed to its enormous popularity. Despite the negative reviews posted by some visitors about the extreme crowds, Dameisha Beach continues to attract huge numbers of people during the summer season. Images and videos showing thousands of visitors packed tightly along the shoreline frequently circulate on social media, further contributing to the beach’s unusual reputation. For many visitors, the sheer scale of the crowds is itself an extraordinary sight. Dameisha Beach demonstrates how a relatively small public space can become one of the busiest recreational destinations when accessibility, affordability and popularity come together.
