7 easy tricks to boost internet speed on Android phones

We all experience this: trying to load a webpage, stream a video or open an app on our Android phones. However, sometimes the internet becomes so slow that it feels like it is crawling.

Slow internet on a phone affects downloads and uploads, websites take longer to open and videos may remain stuck instead of playing smoothly. Fortunately, Android phones offer several tools and tricks that can help improve internet speed.

Clear background apps

Apps running in the background use data, processing power and internet connectivity. Clearing or disabling unnecessary background apps can prevent them from affecting internet speed. For this purpose, go to Settings and disable unnecessary apps running in the background.

Clear cache for faster internet

When you use apps or visit websites on an Android phone, the device stores some data known as cache. These files are designed to help apps and websites run more efficiently and can be useful in the short term.

However, when too many cache files accumulate, they may affect performance and internet speed. Therefore, clearing an app’s cache can help improve the device’s performance. To do this, go to Settings, select Apps, open the relevant app’s information page then select Storage and tap Clear Cache.

Update operating system and apps

Outdated operating systems and apps can affect performance and internet speed. Keeping your software and apps updated can help maintain better speed while also improving the overall performance of your phone.

Use fast browser

A web browser can directly affect your browsing experience and internet performance. Browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox are regularly updated and their performance is continuously improved.

Adjust Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode on smartphones is primarily designed to disable radio-frequency signal transmission. When Airplane Mode is turned on, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular signals are switched off, stopping wireless communication.

However, this feature can also be used to refresh your internet connection. Smartphones connect to nearby mobile towers for cellular signals. When you move around throughout the day, your phone may not always connect to the best available tower.

Resetting the connection through Airplane Mode may help improve internet speed. Simply turn Airplane Mode on and wait for a short while before turning it off again. This may allow your Android phone to reconnect to a better mobile tower and improve internet speed.

Restart your phone or router

Restarting devices can also improve their performance. Restarting your smartphone or router may clear temporary errors and can sometimes help improve internet speed.

Move closer to router

Distance is important when using a Wi-Fi connection. If possible, move closer to your router. This can improve the signal strength and may result in a faster and more stable internet connection.

  • Survey finds divide over AI

A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that artificial intelligence (AI) experts and the general public have very different opinions about the future of AI. While experts are mostly positive about its impact many people are worried that AI could replace jobs and create new challenges. According to the survey, 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive effect on the United States over the next 20 years. In comparison, only 17% of the public share that view. Experts are more confident that AI will improve the way people work and help grow the economy. However many people are concerned that AI could reduce job opportunities especially in roles that depend on human workers. The report also highlights the jobs experts believe are most likely to be affected by AI. About 73% think cashier jobs could be replaced followed by truck drivers (62%) journalists (60%) factory workers (60%) and software engineers (50%). The public generally agrees with these predictions although only 33% believe truck drivers are at high risk. Both experts and the public agree that healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring the greatest benefits. They believe AI could improve medical care and support better treatment. At the same time both groups are concerned that AI may not improve the accuracy of news or election coverage. The survey also found strong support for greater control over AI. Many respondents believe governments may struggle to regulate the technology effectively as it continues to develop. Another finding is the difference between male and female AI experts. Around 63% of male experts expect AI to have a positive impact on the United States compared with 36% of female experts. Women were generally more cautious saying the technology could have both benefits and risks. The report also notes that women remain underrepresented in the AI industry. Researchers suggest that increasing women’s participation in AI development could lead to more balanced technologies. They also point out that many jobs with a large number of female workers such as administrative and customer service roles are becoming more automated increasing the risk of job losses. Overall the report shows that understanding both expert opinions and public concerns is important. As AI continues to grow balancing its benefits with responsible rules and safeguards will be essential.

  • AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton warns AI may escape human control

Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton is widely regarded as the “Godfather of AI.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work on artificial intelligence technology. Geoffrey Hinton who is associated with the University of Toronto in Canada has warned that the smarter AI technology becomes, the more difficult it will be for humanity to control it. He has also expressed concerns about AI agents recently hacking real-world companies. Speaking to the media after an AI technology conference, Geoffrey Hinton said that such incidents are occurring as these systems become increasingly intelligent. He said, “As these systems become smarter, I think we will see more complicated incidents and their ability to escape our control will become much better.” Hinton said the problem is that humans may not be able to rely on or trust highly intelligent AI models. He explained, “I do not believe that we can simply control them or assume that they will not escape our control.” It is worth noting that in recent days, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have acknowledged that their AI models independently escaped controlled environments and hacked the systems of other companies. Hinton described these incidents as somewhat frightening and said that this is only the beginning of AI hacking. He said, “I think we may see numerous cyberattacks but the future is uncertain. People say defenders have more resources than attackers but the problem is that an attacker only needs to succeed once, whereas defenders need to succeed every time.” Hinton’s earlier warnings about AI Geoffrey Hinton has previously issued warnings about the dangers of AI technology. On one occasion, he said there was a 10 to 20 percent chance that the technology could gradually lead to the extinction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential risks posed by AI. He acknowledged that uncertainty surrounding AI can be unsettling because nobody knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like over the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it. Earlier, in August 2025 while speaking on a podcast, Hinton said that AI is not only learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand but there is also no reliable way to simply switch it off. Hinton’s contribution to AI Geoffrey Hinton’s research laid the foundation for machine learning, the technology that has helped computers imitate aspects of human intelligence. However, for the past several years, he has been campaigning for AI to be made safer. In 2023, Hinton left his job at Google, warning that malicious actors could use the technology to harm other people. In an interview some time ago, when he was asked about the pace of AI development, Hinton said that most experts in the field currently believe that at some point possibly within the next 20 years—humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans. He said, “That is a frightening thought. Right now, you can think of this technology as being like a three-year-old child and children grow up very quickly.” AI could transform world According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He said the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the growth of human physical strength because humans began relying on increasingly powerful machines. He explained that humanity is now doing something similar that could replace human intelligence meaning ordinary human intelligence may no longer advance at the same pace while machines continue to develop. When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said it would depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology. In his view, AI could have extraordinary effects on the medical field and could increase efficiency across almost every industry. However, he emphasized that humanity needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of this technology.

  • How to remove shower head Limescale

If the water coming from your shower has become weak or sprays unevenly limescale buildup inside the shower head could be the reason. Experts say a simple citric acid solution is one of the easiest and most effective ways to restore normal water flow. Limescale forms when minerals such as calcium and magnesium commonly found in hard water collect inside the tiny holes of the shower head. Over time these deposits reduce water pressure block the spray nozzles, and can shorten the life of the fixture. To clean it experts recommend mixing 2–3 tablespoons of citric acid with warm water. Remove the shower head if possible and soak it in the solution for 30 minutes to one hour. After soaking gently scrub the nozzles with an old toothbrush and rinse thoroughly with clean water. If the shower head cannot be removed pour the citric acid solution into a plastic bag and secure it around the shower head with a rubber band so the nozzles remain fully submerged. After soaking remove the bag scrub away any remaining deposits and rinse well. Experts say this method helps dissolve stubborn limescale improves water pressure restores an even spray pattern and can extend the lifespan of the shower head. To prevent future buildup clean your shower head at least once a month wipe it dry after use whenever possible and consider installing an anti-limescale or water softening filter if you live in an area with hard water. Regular maintenance can keep your shower working efficiently and reduce the need for costly replacements.

Author Ursula Hegi leaves a legacy of memory and truth

The literary world has lost one of its most perceptive voices on historical memory and collective silence. Author Ursula Hegi, whose work rigorously examined the human dimensions of life during and after World War II in Germany, died on July 27 at her home in Sag Harbor, New York. She was 80 years old. Hegi’s Journey as a Writer Hegi’s journey as a writer was deeply intertwined with her personal background. Born Ursula Koch in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1946, she spent her early years amidst the rubble of a nation struggling to rebuild. Growing up in the immediate aftermath of the war, she experienced a culture dominated by a pervasive, uncomfortable silence. Despite visible physical destruction all around, adults rarely spoke openly about the Holocaust or Germany’s culpability in Nazi atrocities. That suffocating atmosphere of secrecy left an indelible impression on Hegi. At age 18, she left Germany for the United States. She later became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Unpacking the Burgdorf Cycle Hegi’s move across the Atlantic gave her the critical distance needed to confront the uncomfortable realities of her heritage. She began exploring these themes through fiction, creating the imaginary German town of Burgdorf. This setting served as the backdrop for four of her novels, most notably her 1994 masterpiece, Stones from the River. In Stones from the River, Hegi tells the story of Trudi Montag, a woman with dwarfism who serves as the town’s librarian. Trudi lives on the periphery of her community. She becomes a silent observer of human nature. People often dismiss or confide in her, allowing her to gather the town’s deepest secrets and witness how ordinary citizens slowly succumbed to, ignored, or quietly resisted the rise of National Socialism. The novel received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award. It achieved massive commercial success when Oprah Winfrey selected it for her book club in 1997. It has catapulted Hegi to national prominence and cementing the novel as a staple of modern historical fiction. Confronting the Unspoken What set Hegi’s work apart was her refusal to reduce complex historical atrocities to simple caricatures. Rather than focusing solely on major political figures or battlefields, she turned her lens toward the everyday townspeople. The neighbors who looked the other way, the shopkeepers who compromised their moral standards, and the silent witnesses whose compliance enabled widespread horror. Through her character-driven narratives, Hegi demonstrated how shame and denial could poison future generations if left unaddressed. Her non-fiction work, Tearing the Silence, extended these themes by gathering interviews from German-born individuals of her generation to explore how their parents’ war choices shaped their own adult identities. A Lasting Influence Her career as an author of over a dozen books including short story collections, children’s literature, and standalone novels. Hegi spent decades teaching and mentoring aspiring writers, notably serving on the creative writing faculty at Stony Brook Southampton. Ursula Hegi’s legacy lies in her unwavering belief that storytelling can bridge the gap between guilt and healing. By confronting uncomfortable truths with empathy, clarity, and grace, her literature ensures that the painful lessons of the 20th century will not be forgotten.
