Don’t ignore sprouted potatoes

During the rainy season higher humidity can cause stored potatoes to develop sprouts.  Many people wonder whether these potatoes are still safe to eat or if they should be thrown away.

Health experts say the answer depends on the condition of the potato. If a potato has only one or two small sprouts you can remove the sprouts and the surrounding area before cooking it.

However potatoes with many sprouts green patches a soft texture or a shriveled appearance should be thrown away.

Experts explain that these potatoes may contain higher levels of two natural toxins called solanine and chaconine.

In large amounts these compounds can cause food poisoning and lead to nausea vomiting diarrhea stomach pain and other health problems.

Sprouting is a natural process but it also shows that the potato is changing. As the sprouts grow the potato uses its stored nutrients loses moisture becomes soft and some of its starch turns into sugar.

At the same time the levels of natural protective compounds called glycoalkaloids including solanine and chaconine may increase.

These chemicals help protect the potato from insects and disease but can be harmful to people if consumed in high amounts.

A study published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal in 2002 found that eating potatoes with high levels of solanine may cause nausea vomiting diarrhea and stomach cramps.

In more serious cases symptoms such as headache dizziness fever drowsiness changes in heart rate and even nervous system problems may develop within a few hours.

Doctors advise seeking medical care if severe or long lasting symptoms appear after eating potatoes.

Experts also warn that people with diabetes should avoid heavily sprouted potatoes because some of the starch changes into sugar which may increase the potato’s glycemic index and raise blood sugar levels more quickly.

Who should avoid sprouted potatoes?

Health experts say young children older adults pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems should not eat sprouted green or spoiled potatoes because they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of these natural toxins.

How to store potatoes properly

Experts recommend storing raw potatoes in a cool dry and dark place.  They should not be kept in the refrigerator because cold temperatures can turn starch into sugar.

When these potatoes are cooked at high heat they may produce higher levels of acrylamide a compound considered potentially harmful.

Potatoes should also be stored away from onions as onions can speed up the sprouting process

  • How your posture affects your mood and mind

In today’s digital world most people spend hours every day looking at a phone laptop tablet or book.  Experts say that constantly bending your neck or sitting in a slouched position does more than cause neck and shoulder pain it can also affect your mental health. According to health experts the way you sit or stand has a direct effect on your mood and emotions. Even the way you hold your phone or book can influence how you feel.  If you are reading this while looking down at your phone experts suggest sitting up straight. They explain that when you stay in a slouched position your brain may read it as a sign of weakness or stress.  This can increase feelings of anxiety sadness and mental tiredness. Dr. Nitin Menon, a senior consultant in physical medicine says poor posture can make existing mental health problems worse.  Long periods of physical strain may also increase stress and anxiety. Psychiatrist Dr. Shiv Kataria says people often curl up and become disconnected from their surroundings while using their phones. This can make them feel more isolated and lonely. Experts also say the way you hold your phone may reflect your mental state. Holding it tightly checking it repeatedly or endlessly scrolling can increase anxiety and make it harder to relax. Poor posture can also affect your breathing. When you hunch forward your chest becomes compressed making it harder to take deep breaths. This may leave you feeling more tense and uncomfortable. It can also put extra pressure on your neck shoulders and back leading to pain over time. The good news is that improving your posture may help both your body and your mind. Sitting or standing upright with your shoulders back and chest open allows you to breathe more deeply and activates the body’s natural relaxation system. This is one reason why the idea of a “power pose” has become popular. Experts tips for better posture Keep your phone laptop or monitor at eye level. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds and gently stretch your neck and shoulders. Use a book stand or pillow to raise books instead of looking down. Make sure your chair supports your lower back keep your feet flat on the floor and place your screen at eye level. Strengthen your posture muscles with simple daily exercises such as chin tucks and shoulder blade squeezes. Experts say that changing your posture is a simple step you can take right away to improve your mood and reduce stress. While it may not be easy to avoid screens making small posture changes every day can support both your physical and mental health.

  • Easy tips for dark circles

Dark circles under the eyes are common and can appear for many reasons including lack of sleep and tiredness. They can make the face look dull but they are not always caused by poor sleep. Lifestyle habits aging allergies and genetics can also play a role. Getting enough sleep every night is one of the most important steps.  Resting well may help reduce the appearance of dark circles especially if they are caused by fatigue. If dark circles remain even after getting enough sleep you can try a few simple home remedies. Cucumber slices Place chilled cucumber slices over your closed eyes for a few minutes.  The cool feeling may help soothe tired eyes and reduce puffiness for a short time. Some people also use potato slices for dark circles. While they are a popular home remedy there is limited scientific evidence that they provide long term results. Eat healthy fruits A balanced diet is important for healthy skin.  Fruits such as bananas papaya and guava provide vitamins and nutrients that support overall skin health. However eating these fruits alone cannot guarantee that dark circles will disappear. Lemon juice and Oil Some home remedies suggest mixing lemon juice with jasmine oil and applying it around the eyes. However you should be very careful because lemon juice can irritate the delicate skin around the eyes and should never get into the eyes. Dark circles can have different causes in different people including genetics aging allergies skin tone and lack of sleep. If they continue for a long time or are accompanied by swelling or other unusual symptoms it is best to consult a dermatologist.

  • How to drink lassi without bloating

Lassi is a popular summer drink in Pakistan. It feels refreshing and can help add fluids to the body.  However some people notice that drinking very cold lassi makes them feel bloated gassy, or heavy. One possible reason is that very cold drinks may temporarily affect the digestive process.  A sudden change in temperature can make the stomach work more slowly which may cause food to move through the digestive system at a slower pace. Another common reason is lactose a natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. Some people have difficulty digesting lactose.  When they drink lassi, they may develop gas stomach cramps bloating or discomfort. Lassi itself can be a healthy choice because yogurt contains probiotics which are helpful bacteria that support digestion.  The problem may occur when it is consumed in large amounts, made extremely cold or taken at an uncomfortable time. Drinking lassi immediately after a heavy meal may also make some people feel too full.  People who regularly experience bloating or gas after consuming dairy products may have difficulty digesting lactose. If you enjoy lassi but often feel uncomfortable afterward try drinking it at a moderate temperature instead of adding lots of ice. Keep the portion small and avoid adding too much sugar. You can also add mint or roasted cumin for extra flavor. People with sensitive digestion may prefer thin buttermilk which can be a lighter alternative. If dairy products regularly cause severe bloating, cramps or other digestive problems it is better to speak with a doctor to find out whether lactose intolerance or another digestive issue could be the reason.

  • Many smokers still miss major health risks

A new study has found that public understanding of the health risks of smoking has improved only slightly over the past 20 years. Researchers studied more than 240,000 smokers from 46 countries. Most participants knew that smoking can cause lung cancer.  However far fewer were aware that smoking can also greatly increase the risk of heart disease heart attacks and strokes. Gaps in public awareness The study also found that many smokers do not fully understand the dangers of secondhand smoke.  They may not know that breathing in someone else’s cigarette smoke can also increase the risk of heart disease heart attacks and strokes. The research was published in the journal BMJ Open. Researchers said that despite health warnings on cigarette packs tobacco control policies and years of public awareness campaigns important gaps in knowledge still remain. Heart risks often overlooked Lead author Janet Chung Hall, a scientist with the University of Waterloo’s International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project said the lack of awareness about the serious effects of smoking and secondhand smoke is concerning. Experts estimate that smoking related heart and blood vessel diseases cause more than two million deaths worldwide every year. The researchers say stronger public health campaigns are needed to help people understand that smoking does not only damage the lungs. It can also seriously affect the heart and blood vessels. Better awareness of these risks could encourage more smokers to quit and help reduce the harmful effects of tobacco on both smokers and people around them.

  • Dogs can read human emotions

Dogs may understand more than just the words we say. A new scientific study suggests that they can also notice human facial expressions and may recognize different emotions such as happiness, anger fear and sadness. Researchers from the  University of Vienna in Austria studied dogs’ brains to understand how they react to human faces.  Their findings were published in the scientific journal iScience. How the study was done In the first part of the study researchers used MRI scans to study the brains of eight dogs. The group included six Border Collies, one Labrador and one Golden Retriever. The dogs were shown pictures of unfamiliar people with happy or neutral facial expressions. When the dogs saw happy faces certain areas of their brains became more active. These areas are linked to thinking rewards and positive experiences. Researchers found strong activity in areas such as the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus.  The caudate nucleus is connected with the brain’s reward system and may also respond to social rewards. According to senior researcher Laura Cuaya, this suggests that a happy human face may have a positive emotional meaning for dogs even when the person is a stranger. Dogs may tell different emotions apart The researchers then wanted to know whether dogs could also recognize negative emotions. Twelve dogs were shown human faces expressing happiness anger, fear and sadness. Their brain activity was recorded and studied using machine learning methods. The results showed that dogs’ brains reacted differently to angry fearful and sad faces compared with happy faces. The researchers also found different brain activity patterns for each negative emotion. This suggests that dogs may be able to tell these emotions apart rather than seeing all negative expressions as the same. Dogs notice small changes First author Raul Hernandez Perez explained that humans can often understand emotions from very small changes in a person’s face.  Dogs may also pay close attention to these small changes. This ability may help explain why dogs are so good at understanding people. Unlike humans and monkeys dogs did not develop these social skills through the same evolutionary path. Instead thousands of years of living closely with humans may have helped dogs become highly sensitive to our behavior and signals. Interestingly both researchers are not only professional colleagues but also life partners. Their own two dogs, Odin and Kunkun were also part of the study. It is not only about the face The researchers say dogs do not depend on facial expressions alone. They can also notice changes in our voice body movements, behavior and even smell. So when a dog seems to know that its owner is happy worried or upset it may be combining many different signals at the same time. Training dogs for MRI scans The dogs had to receive special training before taking part in the research.  They learned to stay still inside an MRI scanner for short periods. At first they were trained to remain still for only one or two seconds.  The time was slowly increased as they became more comfortable. They were also introduced to the scanner the equipment and the sounds it made.  One of the hardest parts was teaching the dogs that doing nothing was actually their job. The dogs took part voluntarily and could leave whenever they wanted. The study has some limits The study was small and most of the dogs were Border Collies. This breed is known for being intelligent and good at understanding human social signals. Because of this the results may not be the same for every dog breed. More research is needed to find out whether different breeds understand human emotions in different ways. Scientists also want to learn how dogs use these emotional signals in everyday life. The study does not prove that dogs experience happiness sadness or fear in exactly the same way humans do. Scientists cannot directly know what a dog is thinking or feeling. However the brain activity does suggest that human facial expressions carry emotional information for dogs. The bond between humans and dogs goes far beyond simple commands. Dogs can pick up signals from our faces voices movements and behavior. This ability may be one of the reasons why the relationship between people and dogs is so strong.
