Dogs can read human emotions

Dogs may understand more than just the words we say. A new scientific study suggests that they can also notice human facial expressions and may recognize different emotions such as happiness, anger fear and sadness.

Researchers from the  University of Vienna in Austria studied dogs’ brains to understand how they react to human faces.  Their findings were published in the scientific journal iScience.

How the study was done

In the first part of the study researchers used MRI scans to study the brains of eight dogs. The group included six Border Collies, one Labrador and one Golden Retriever. The dogs were shown pictures of unfamiliar people with happy or neutral facial expressions.

When the dogs saw happy faces certain areas of their brains became more active. These areas are linked to thinking rewards and positive experiences.

Researchers found strong activity in areas such as the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus.  The caudate nucleus is connected with the brain’s reward system and may also respond to social rewards.

According to senior researcher Laura Cuaya, this suggests that a happy human face may have a positive emotional meaning for dogs even when the person is a stranger.

Dogs may tell different emotions apart

The researchers then wanted to know whether dogs could also recognize negative emotions. Twelve dogs were shown human faces expressing happiness anger, fear and sadness. Their brain activity was recorded and studied using machine learning methods.

The results showed that dogs’ brains reacted differently to angry fearful and sad faces compared with happy faces. The researchers also found different brain activity patterns for each negative emotion.

This suggests that dogs may be able to tell these emotions apart rather than seeing all negative expressions as the same.

Dogs notice small changes

First author Raul Hernandez Perez explained that humans can often understand emotions from very small changes in a person’s face.  Dogs may also pay close attention to these small changes.

This ability may help explain why dogs are so good at understanding people. Unlike humans and monkeys dogs did not develop these social skills through the same evolutionary path.

Instead thousands of years of living closely with humans may have helped dogs become highly sensitive to our behavior and signals. Interestingly both researchers are not only professional colleagues but also life partners.

Their own two dogs, Odin and Kunkun were also part of the study.

It is not only about the face

The researchers say dogs do not depend on facial expressions alone. They can also notice changes in our voice body movements, behavior and even smell. So when a dog seems to know that its owner is happy worried or upset it may be combining many different signals at the same time.

Training dogs for MRI scans

The dogs had to receive special training before taking part in the research.  They learned to stay still inside an MRI scanner for short periods. At first they were trained to remain still for only one or two seconds.  The time was slowly increased as they became more comfortable.

They were also introduced to the scanner the equipment and the sounds it made.  One of the hardest parts was teaching the dogs that doing nothing was actually their job.

The dogs took part voluntarily and could leave whenever they wanted.

The study has some limits

The study was small and most of the dogs were Border Collies. This breed is known for being intelligent and good at understanding human social signals.

Because of this the results may not be the same for every dog breed. More research is needed to find out whether different breeds understand human emotions in different ways.

Scientists also want to learn how dogs use these emotional signals in everyday life. The study does not prove that dogs experience happiness sadness or fear in exactly the same way humans do.

Scientists cannot directly know what a dog is thinking or feeling. However the brain activity does suggest that human facial expressions carry emotional information for dogs.

The bond between humans and dogs goes far beyond simple commands. Dogs can pick up signals from our faces voices movements and behavior.

This ability may be one of the reasons why the relationship between people and dogs is so strong.

Vaping may look less harmful than traditional smoking but experts warn that it can still pose serious risks for children and teenagers. Preventing young people from starting vaping could help protect their health both now and in the future.

    A new study has revealed that fructose (natural sugar) consumed as part of the daily diet may help certain types of cancer spread throughout the body. According to the study published in the scientific journal Nature Aging, cancer cells that survive chemotherapy do not remain inactive. Instead, they release fructose which activates other cancer cells allowing them to leave their original location and spread to other parts of the body. Experts say that excessive consumption of sugary drinks and beverages containing high levels of fructose may also increase the risk of cancer spreading even in patients who are not undergoing chemotherapy. The study further found that fructose causes changes inside cancer cells that make it easier for them to move from one part of the body to another. The research was conducted on ovarian cancer but experts believe that a similar process could also occur in pancreatic, colorectal and liver cancers.

    Millions of people around the world struggle with insomnia and other sleep problems. Now scientists in China have identified a natural brain molecule that may help explain how the body knows when it is time to sleep. The discovery could lead to safer and more effective sleep medicines in the future. The study published in Nature Neuroscience found that a natural molecule called tryptamine (TrpA) plays an important role in increasing the body’s need for sleep. Researchers say this molecule sends signals to the brain that it is time to rest. Experts explained that good sleep is essential for overall health. During sleep the brain organizes memories stores information and removes waste that builds up during the day. However many people do not get enough sleep because of insomnia stress depression anxiety or problems with the body’s internal clock also known as the circadian rhythm. To better understand the process researchers studied mice which are active at night and pigs which are active during the day. Using a special fluorescent sensor they measured the amount of tryptamine in the animals’ cerebrospinal fluid at different times. The scientists found that the longer the animals stayed awake the higher their tryptamine levels became. This suggests that the molecule reflects the body’s natural “sleep pressure” the growing need for sleep after spending many hours awake. The team also discovered that active nerve cells release tryptamine while the body is awake. The molecule then attaches to a receptor called GPR139 which activates sleep promoting nerve cells in an area of the brain known as the hypothalamic preoptic area. In the next stage of the study researchers tested experimental compounds that activated the GPR139 receptor. The results showed that the animals slept longer and experienced better quality sleep. Scientists say finding the same results in both mice and pigs suggests that this biological system may also exist in humans. If future studies confirm this the discovery could help develop new treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders that are safer more effective and have fewer side effects than many current sleep medications.

These help it hold onto different surfaces and objects firmly. The octopus may have reacted defensively because of the unusual situation and tried to protect itself by holding on tightly.

    Scientists claim to have discovered a fascinating cosmic mystery. According to them, it is a “black hole star” about the size of our solar system and glowing with extremely bright red light. An international team of researchers made the discovery using images captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which revealed the mysterious red glow. The black hole star is located in the constellation Cetus, billions of light-years away from Earth. Scientists believe it may have formed around 660 million years after the Big Bang. It appears similar to a massive star but is estimated to release 100 billion times more energy than an ordinary star. Such enormous energy output has previously been associated with black holes rather than stars. Scientist Rohan Naidu of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who was part of the research team said that they had discovered an entirely new type of cosmic phenomenon. He explained that the object is shining with an amount of energy normally associated with black holes while at the same time displaying characteristics typically linked to stars. First observed by James Webb Space Telescope Scientists have been using the James Webb Space Telescope to study distant galaxies in the universe. Their interest in this phenomenon increased after the discovery of the galaxy Maisie’s Galaxy (CEERS 1) and other early-universe objects. In a study published in the journal Nature, researchers named the red-light phenomenon MAM-BH1. They said its completely red appearance and disappearance at specific wavelengths are so dramatic that it cannot easily be compared with other known cosmic objects. Computer simulations suggested that rather than being an extremely massive star, the object is actually a black hole that shines like a star. If the scientists’ interpretation is confirmed, it could indicate that many of the mysterious red dots observed across the universe may also be black hole stars. Rohan Naidu believes that these types of black hole stars could play an important role in the evolution of galaxies.
