PPP to challenge AJK election results over rigging…

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced that it will challenge the results of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections through legal and constitutional forums, alleging widespread rigging, voter manipulation and administrative interference during the electoral process.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, accompanied by senior PPP leader Chaudhry Yasin, accused the federal government, the AJK Election Commission and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of working together to influence the election outcome. He claimed the electoral process was neither transparent nor impartial and alleged that several complaints submitted by the PPP were ignored by the election authorities.

Memon said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had repeatedly called for free, fair and transparent elections in AJK. He said Bilawal had urged all institutions to protect the democratic process and ensure that the interests of the Kashmiri people remained above political considerations.

The PPP leader alleged that the AJK Election Commission failed to perform its constitutional responsibilities fairly. He claimed the commission did not take action on complaints submitted by the party during polling and questioned its impartiality throughout the election process.

According to Memon, polling staff and election materials reached several polling stations late, affecting the voting process and creating unnecessary confusion among voters. He also questioned the postponement of polling in constituency LA-27, saying the decision was based on weather conditions despite what he described as clear circumstances.

He further alleged that violence and intimidation were reported in several constituencies during polling. Referring to the killing of PPP worker Mukhtar Younis in LA-9 Nikyal, Memon claimed the incident reflected the deteriorating security situation on election day. He also alleged that attacks on PPP workers and political leaders were not properly investigated despite complaints to the relevant authorities.

Memon accused authorities of failing to take action against those allegedly involved in election-related violence. He also claimed that PPP workers who reached certain polling stations after receiving reports of irregularities came under fire.

The senior minister further alleged that ballot papers had reached some candidates before polling day and claimed there were serious violations during the voting process. He also alleged that voter turnout in one constituency exceeded 100 percent and called on the Election Commission to investigate the matter immediately.

He said the PPP would continue to pursue all available legal and constitutional options to challenge the election results. The party, he added, would present evidence before the appropriate forums and seek action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also criticised the conduct of the elections, saying the Election Commission had failed to address complaints raised after the first phase of polling. He maintained that the party reserved the right to demand re-elections in constituencies where it believed the electoral process had been compromised.

    Security forces have killed seven militants during an intelligence-based operation in Balochistan’s Kharan district. According to security sources, the operation was conducted in the Lajay area of Kharan. The action was carried out on the basis of intelligence reports about the presence of militants in the area. Seven militants linked to Fitna al-Khawarij were killed during the operation. Several other militants were also wounded, according to the sources. Security forces conducted a search of the militants’ hideouts after the operation. A large quantity of modern weapons and ammunition was recovered. Other military equipment was also found at the sites. Security forces also recovered a motorcycle and two vehicles from the militants’ hideouts. The security forces subsequently destroyed the militants’ positions. The hideouts were completely dismantled during the operation. According to security sources, the militants were involved in several serious criminal and terrorist activities. These included extortion, kidnapping and target killings. The militants were also allegedly involved in planning suicide attacks. Their activities posed a security threat in the region, the sources said. The operation was conducted as part of Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3. Security forces have been carrying out intelligence-based operations under the campaign to eliminate terrorist networks. Officials said such operations are aimed at disrupting militant activities before attacks can be carried out. Security forces are continuing operations against militant groups in different areas of Balochistan. Intelligence-based actions are being used to identify militant hideouts and target terrorist networks.

    LAHORE: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore hosted a high-level meeting of vice chancellors from more than 80 universities across Punjab under the auspices of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). HEC Chairman Professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar chaired the meeting, while UET Lahore Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shahid Munir hosted the gathering. Participants discussed the federal government’s initiative to modernize university curricula and degree programmes, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar urged universities to take immediate steps to update their curricula, teaching methods and academic programmes. He stressed the need to equip students with modern knowledge and practical skills that can help them compete in an increasingly technology-driven economy. The HEC chairman highlighted the importance of incorporating fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, cybersecurity and biotechnology into university education. He also called on universities to align their academic programmes with the evolving needs of industry and the employment market so they can produce graduates with relevant and marketable skills. During the meeting, participants exchanged views on the role of artificial intelligence in higher education, research and innovation. They also discussed digital learning, technology-enabled teaching and opportunities to strengthen international collaboration among universities. UET Lahore Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shahid Munir said the university was ready to share its AI-related curriculum and coursework with other higher education institutions. He emphasized the importance of cooperation among universities to accelerate the adoption of modern technologies and strengthen the quality of higher education across the country. The meeting also highlighted the growing importance of research and digital education in preparing universities for future challenges. Academic leaders discussed ways to promote innovation, improve learning opportunities and create stronger links between higher education institutions and industry. As part of a plantation campaign at UET Lahore, HEC Chairman Professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar also planted a sapling on the university campus, underscoring the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability.     TEHRAN: Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated further after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any country assisting Washington in military operations against Tehran could become a legitimate target, while the US confirmed its naval blockade on Iran remains fully operational. An IRGC spokesperson, speaking to Iranian state media, warned that countries providing logistical or military support to the United States—including the United Kingdom—would face retaliation. The official alleged that US B-1 bombers had recently used British bases during strikes on Iran, claiming any nation involved in such operations would be treated as a direct participant in the conflict. The warning came as reports emerged that US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended plans for additional strikes on Iran after nearly two weeks of continuous military operations. According to US media, the decision was influenced by concerns over dwindling missile defence stockpiles, the risk of wider regional escalation and the desire to allow more room for diplomatic efforts. Despite the pause in airstrikes, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said its naval blockade against Iran remains in force. US forces reported intercepting several commercial vessels suspected of attempting to breach the blockade, redirecting multiple ships, disabling one vessel that ignored repeated warnings and carrying out verification inspections on others before allowing them to continue their voyages. US officials said contingency plans remain in place should military operations resume, underscoring that Washington is maintaining pressure on Tehran while keeping diplomatic options open. Meanwhile, Iran’s latest warning has added to growing concerns that the confrontation could draw more regional and international actors into the crisis.

    The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sought responses from the federal government and the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports over the reported non-renewal of the passport of Arshad Khan, popularly known as “Arshad Chaiwala.” Justice Umair Majid Malik heard the petition filed by Arshad Khan, with Barrister Umar Ejaz Gilani representing him in court. The petitioner’s counsel told the court that Arshad Khan is an entrepreneur who has promoted Pakistani culture internationally. According to the counsel, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) verification board has already cleared Arshad Khan’s identity. His Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) is also active. The court was informed that Arshad had applied for renewal of his passport on August 20, 2025. However, despite the passage of nearly a year, the renewed document had allegedly not been issued. The lawyer said Arshad had repeatedly contacted the office of the interior secretary to resolve the matter but had not received a satisfactory response. He also informed the court that a legal notice had been served on the interior secretary. Despite the notice, no response was reportedly received. Arshad has asked the high court to direct the authorities to issue his renewed passport without further delay. His petition also seeks a declaration that the continued failure to issue the passport is unlawful and violates his fundamental rights. During the hearing, Justice Umair Majid Malik observed that the court would first obtain the position of the relevant government authorities before examining the matter further. The IHC subsequently issued notices to the Director General Immigration and Passports and the federal government through the interior secretary.
