Five-wicket star Mohammad Abbas dropped for key Test

PORT OF SPAIN: Pakistan’s team selection for the second Test against the West Indies has triggered widespread debate after experienced fast bowler Mohammad Abbas was left out of the playing XI despite delivering a match-winning five-wicket haul in the previous Test.

The unexpected decision has raised eyebrows among cricket experts and fans, with many describing it as one of the most unusual selection calls in Pakistan’s recent Test history.

Abbas was Pakistan’s standout performer in the opening Test at Tarouba, finishing with eight wickets across the match, including a brilliant five-wicket haul in one innings. Despite his efforts, Pakistan suffered a 90-run defeat, largely due to a disappointing batting display.

However, instead of retaining their leading bowler, the team management opted to hand Ubaid Shah his Test debut for the series-deciding second match.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam defended the move, saying the decision was based on pitch conditions and part of four changes made to the playing XI.

According to Babar, the management believed the conditions in Port of Spain required a different bowling combination, and Abbas was rested with those factors in mind.

The decision has nevertheless sparked criticism, particularly because bowlers who claim five wickets in an innings are rarely omitted from the very next Test.

Cricket statisticians pointed out that this is believed to be the first time since 1980 that a Pakistan bowler has been dropped immediately after taking a five-wicket haul in a Test innings.

The last comparable case dates back to Pakistan’s 1979-80 tour of India, when Ehteshamuddin was left out after claiming five wickets in an innings to make room for the returning Imran Khan.

The debate intensified after Ubaid Shah endured a difficult start to his Test career. On the opening day of the second Test, the young pacer conceded 56 runs in just nine overs, making him Pakistan’s most expensive bowler of the day despite picking up a wicket.

His costly spell has prompted fresh questions over whether the management made the right call by overlooking Abbas, whose experience and consistency have long been valued in red-ball cricket.

With the series on the line, Pakistan’s selection strategy is now under intense scrutiny. Whether the bold gamble pays off could have a significant impact on the outcome of the Test and may shape discussions over team selection in the months ahead.

That rejection means the fee-setting process will continue moving forward in the district court. This holds true regardless of how the higher court eventually rules on the separate contempt issue. Alongside the commission proposal, Apple filed a separate motion asking the court to order both companies into a settlement conference. The session would be overseen by Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero. According to the filing, Apple had already proposed this meeting directly to Epic’s legal team on August 11. Epic, however, declined to agree to the arrangement at that time. Despite Epic’s refusal, Apple maintains the court still has the authority to compel the conference. The company points to the fact that the Ninth Circuit itself had previously invited both parties to work toward an agreement on link-out commissions. Apple believes a confidential meeting could help resolve the dispute without further extending the ongoing remand proceedings. Notably, the filing does not include any actual settlement terms, it simply requests a court order mandating the conference take place. With both sides digging in on separate fronts, the long-running dispute between Apple and Epic shows no signs of reaching a resolution anytime soon.

Speaking at the Foreign Office’s weekly media briefing on Thursday, spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan remains concerned about the fragile security situation in the region despite a brief period of relative calm in recent days. He said the temporary reduction in violence had raised hopes for a lasting ceasefire, but recent developments have shown that the situation remains highly unstable. Andrabi stressed that Pakistan continues to support diplomacy as the only practical solution to the conflict. He said Islamabad welcomes every effort aimed at maintaining the pause in hostilities and encouraging both Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations. According to him, Pakistan remains actively engaged with all relevant parties and will continue supporting diplomatic initiatives. He added that discussions are still taking place to restore stability, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Pakistan, he said, is working to encourage both countries to resume talks under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding while also following the commitments outlined in the Pakistan Qatar joint statement issued on June 22. The Foreign Office urged both the United States and Iran to exercise restraint and honour their commitment to restart technical level discussions. Andrabi said continued dialogue is essential to resolving outstanding disputes and preventing another escalation that could threaten regional peace and global energy supplies. The Islamabad memorandum of understanding was signed on June 18 after weeks of diplomatic efforts. The agreement was intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and create conditions for ending the wider conflict that began following US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year. Under the understanding, both sides had agreed to continue negotiations over the following two months. However, tensions returned on July 7 when Iran launched attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker. Tehran accused Washington of violating the agreement, leading to renewed US military strikes on Iranian targets. Since then, the conflict has expanded, with Houthi forces in Yemen imposing a naval blockade affecting Saudi Arabia and increasing pressure on another key maritime route. Violence has continued to spread across the region. On Wednesday, explosions were reported at a natural gas export facility in Egypt, while a US owned floating storage vessel was reportedly struck by a drone. At the same time, the United States and Saudi Arabia carried out joint operations against Iran backed armed groups in Iraq following attacks on American troops and Saudi energy infrastructure. After several days without major military action, the United States also launched fresh strikes against Iranian targets on Thursday in response to attacks on American bases in Jordan. During the briefing, Andrabi also rejected a recent documentary produced by Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle about Pakistan’s nuclear programme. He described the report as misleading and said it relied on outdated claims, speculation, and one sided sources. The spokesperson argued that the documentary failed to accurately reflect the history and purpose of Pakistan’s nuclear programme. He said responsible journalism requires balanced reporting and careful verification, adding that publishing unsupported allegations could damage the broadcaster’s credibility. He maintained that Pakistan has a strong command and control system for its nuclear assets, supported by legal, technical, and institutional safeguards that meet international standards. According to Andrabi, these arrangements have been recognised by independent experts. Responding to questions about India’s decision to block social media accounts belonging to Pakistan Television and other Pakistani platforms, Andrabi criticised the move, calling it another example of restrictions on independent media. He said the Indian government was attempting to limit access to alternative viewpoints while promoting an official narrative. He also urged the international community to take notice of what he described as shrinking space for free expression and media freedom in India.

Geek+ has grown into the world’s largest supplier of autonomous mobile robots and expanded its international presence after listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange last year. Britain has become the company’s biggest European market, with its UK partner MotionTech deploying more than 2,000 robots across 10 warehouse sites. MotionTech says demand for automated warehouse technology continues to rise as businesses seek faster order processing while dealing with persistent labour shortages. Company representatives say customers want solutions that increase storage capacity, improve picking speeds, and reduce reliance on large workforces without sacrificing efficiency. The growing use of robotics comes as the United Kingdom continues to struggle with weak productivity growth. Economists have argued that wider adoption of automation will be necessary if businesses are to remain competitive in the years ahead. A recent report by the Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development found that Britain has been slower than many other advanced economies in adopting robotics, despite its long industrial history. Looking ahead, Geek+ says it wants to move beyond transporting goods and eventually create fully automated warehouses where robots handle picking, moving, and packing products with minimal human involvement. While companies across China are investing heavily in humanoid robots capable of performing more complex tasks, experts believe these machines are still several years away from widespread commercial use. For now, wheeled warehouse robots remain the most practical solution for retailers. As British businesses continue searching for ways to improve productivity and overcome staffing shortages, warehouses across the country are becoming an important testing ground for China’s rapidly expanding robotics industry.

He said the anger connected to those experiences eventually affected his personal life and made it difficult for him to move beyond the past.
