Five-wicket star Mohammad Abbas dropped for key Test

PORT OF SPAIN: Pakistan’s team selection for the second Test against the West Indies has triggered widespread debate after experienced fast bowler Mohammad Abbas was left out of the playing XI despite delivering a match-winning five-wicket haul in the previous Test.

The unexpected decision has raised eyebrows among cricket experts and fans, with many describing it as one of the most unusual selection calls in Pakistan’s recent Test history.

Abbas was Pakistan’s standout performer in the opening Test at Tarouba, finishing with eight wickets across the match, including a brilliant five-wicket haul in one innings. Despite his efforts, Pakistan suffered a 90-run defeat, largely due to a disappointing batting display.

However, instead of retaining their leading bowler, the team management opted to hand Ubaid Shah his Test debut for the series-deciding second match.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam defended the move, saying the decision was based on pitch conditions and part of four changes made to the playing XI.

According to Babar, the management believed the conditions in Port of Spain required a different bowling combination, and Abbas was rested with those factors in mind.

The decision has nevertheless sparked criticism, particularly because bowlers who claim five wickets in an innings are rarely omitted from the very next Test.

Cricket statisticians pointed out that this is believed to be the first time since 1980 that a Pakistan bowler has been dropped immediately after taking a five-wicket haul in a Test innings.

The last comparable case dates back to Pakistan’s 1979-80 tour of India, when Ehteshamuddin was left out after claiming five wickets in an innings to make room for the returning Imran Khan.

The debate intensified after Ubaid Shah endured a difficult start to his Test career. On the opening day of the second Test, the young pacer conceded 56 runs in just nine overs, making him Pakistan’s most expensive bowler of the day despite picking up a wicket.

His costly spell has prompted fresh questions over whether the management made the right call by overlooking Abbas, whose experience and consistency have long been valued in red-ball cricket.

With the series on the line, Pakistan’s selection strategy is now under intense scrutiny. Whether the bold gamble pays off could have a significant impact on the outcome of the Test and may shape discussions over team selection in the months ahead.

    Shahnawaz Zaidi opens up about love, loss, remarriage

    Renowned Pakistani poet, painter, professor and actor Shahnawaz Zaidi recently appeared as a guest on Good Morning Pakistan, where he spoke openly about his personal life, his first marriage, the loss of his wife and his decision to marry again. Zaidi, who began his teaching career at Punjab University and later served as a professor in Nairobi, has made significant contributions to literature, education and the arts. He is the brother of renowned actor Sheheryar Zaidi and has appeared in several popular dramas, including Nashtar, Pamaal, Case No. 9 and Khushboo Mein Basay Khat. During the show, Zaidi reflected on his first marriage, describing it as a love marriage that lasted 37 years. He revealed that he had hoped to celebrate his golden jubilee with his wife but sadly, that dream could not come true. Speaking about how their relationship began, Zaidi said he was only 24 when he got married. He described himself as a poetic person who fell in love instantly and saw no reason to delay the marriage. However, the relationship faced opposition from both families because of differences involving sect, language and family backgrounds. According to Zaidi, his wife’s father had already chosen another man for her and was initially unwilling to reconsider his decision. Although Zaidi’s family was relatively modern, they too had reservations about his choice. Eventually, however, they accepted his decision. Zaidi also recalled that his wife had once called him in tears and told him that she was diabetic and that he should carefully consider marrying her. Her mother also suffered from diabetes. Despite the concerns, the couple went ahead with their marriage and eventually built a family together. The couple had six children, although Zaidi revealed that the first two pregnancies ended in abortion. Later, he received a job opportunity in Nairobi, and the couple moved there. He described their eight years in Nairobi as a blessing, explaining that the pleasant weather, excellent healthcare facilities and quality medical care his wife received made the experience particularly meaningful. Zaidi said his wife spent considerable time in hospitals during her pregnancies, but she received excellent care. He viewed their relocation to Nairobi as a blessing in disguise because all of their children were eventually born there. The veteran artist also spoke candidly about the difficult period following his wife’s death. He revealed that he had never planned to marry again and used to dismiss the idea of a second marriage. However, four years after his first wife passed away, he began experiencing a profound sense of detachment from life. He admitted that although he continued working and remained involved in various activities, he felt mentally lost and was falling apart emotionally. During this challenging period, he eventually began considering the possibility of remarriage. Zaidi said there was initially no one in his life, but he later met an Iranian woman who was considerably younger than him. Although he initially tried to avoid the idea of marriage, their relationship developed naturally and they eventually fell in love. He revealed that they have now been married for 10 years. Looking back, Zaidi said his second marriage was something he had never expected, but life ultimately took him in a direction he had not planned.     High Commissioner Tipu Usman unveils people-centred consular reforms for British Pakistanis

    LONDON:Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Tipu Usman, has announced a series of people-centred reforms aimed at improving consular services for the British Pakistani community. As part of the new measures, consular services at the Pakistan High Commission in London will now begin at 8:00 am, Monday to Friday, increasing the number of appointments available each day and helping reduce waiting times. The High Commission has also introduced a daily walk-in facility from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday, on a first-come, first-served basis. The service will cover passport issuance and renewal, NADRA-related services, document attestation, including Powers of Attorney, and Police Character Certificates. The reforms are among the first major public service initiatives introduced by High Commissioner Tipu Usman since assuming office. They are aimed at making consular services more accessible, efficient and responsive to the needs of overseas Pakistanis living in London and surrounding areas. Members of the British Pakistani community have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a practical step that will ease access to essential consular services and improve the overall public service experience at the Pakistan High Commission in London.
