    Pakistan keeps petrol and diesel prices unchanged …

    The Government of Pakistan has decided to keep petrol and diesel prices unchanged for the next two days after implementing fuel price increases over five consecutive days. The Petroleum Division of the Ministry of Energy issued an official notification confirming that current prices will remain in effect on July 26 and 27, 2026. According to the notification, the price of petrol will remain at Rs. 335.18 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) will continue to be sold at Rs. 383.46 per litre during the two-day period. The decision comes after a series of recent adjustments to petroleum prices under the government’s revised pricing mechanism. Authorities said no further changes would be made during the specified period, providing temporary stability for consumers following multiple increases. The latest notification confirms that the existing fuel rates announced on July 25 will remain effective through July 27. Officials from the Petroleum Division stated that the move is in line with the government’s current fuel pricing policy. Just a day earlier, the government had raised petrol prices by Rs. 3.66 per litre and high-speed diesel prices by Rs. 4.80 per litre. Those increases followed another hike in which petrol became Rs. 4.40 per litre more expensive and diesel increased by Rs. 3.62 per litre. Before the latest revisions, petrol was priced at Rs. 331.52 per litre, while high-speed diesel was available at Rs. 378.66 per litre on July 24. The recent adjustments reflect ongoing fluctuations in petroleum pricing driven by changes in international oil markets and domestic pricing policies. Fuel prices play a significant role in Pakistan’s economy, influencing transportation costs, industrial production, and the prices of essential goods and services. Any increase or decrease in petroleum prices has a direct impact on businesses and household budgets across the country.     LAHORE: Provincial Minister for Housing Punjab Bilal Yasin has said that the spiritual and religious teachings of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) are a timeless source of guidance, inspiring people towards divine love, devotion to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), humility, compassion, brotherhood and service to humanity. He said that the saints and spiritual leaders devoted their lives to the propagation of Islam, purification of the soul, moral reform and the promotion of a peaceful, harmonious and exemplary society. He expressed these views while inaugurating the Urs Mubarak of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) and participating in the traditional chadar poshi ceremony. Secretary/Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr. Ehsan Bhutta, Director General Religious Affairs Hafiz Anees ur Rehman, Director Administration Shakir Sandhu, officers of the Auqaf Department, and a large number of devotees and followers were also present. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ehsan Bhutta said that Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA), whose real name was Hazrat Sheikh Syed Ali Qadri (RA), also known as Sheikh Syed Ali Makki, is regarded among the prominent and earliest renowned Sufi saints associated with Lahore. He said that the title “Makki” reflects his traditional association with Makkah Mukarramah, from where he is believed to have travelled to Lahore. His association is traced to the Ghaznavid era, around the 11th century CE/5th century AH. Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) devoted his life to the propagation of Islamic teachings, purification of the soul, social reform and service to humanity, and his spiritual and moral legacy continues to guide and inspire devotees in Lahore and across Pakistan. Dr. Ehsan Bhutta further emphasized that the teachings of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) underscore a strong relationship with Allah Almighty, righteousness, humility and compassion for His creation, and that their practical implementation can help build a peaceful, morally upright and exemplary society. He said that the Khanqahs and shrines of the saints are an integral part of Pakistan’s rich religious and spiritual heritage, serving as centres for the dissemination of peace, love, tolerance, brotherhood and service to humanity. He stressed that transmitting the noble teachings of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) to the younger generation is a collective responsibility so that youth remain connected with their spiritual heritage and incorporate its positive and reformative message into their daily lives. He added that the Government of Punjab, in accordance with the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is taking effective measures to provide devotees visiting the shrines of saints with the best possible facilities, cleanliness, security and other essential arrangements. On the occasion, a 50-pound cake was cut, while a large-scale Langar distribution was also formally inaugurated for devotees and visitors. The ceremony concluded with special prayers for the security, peace, prosperity and stability of Pakistan, the safety of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, and the unity, solidarity and progress of the Muslim Ummah.

    Islamabad:Pakistan has preferential trade arrangements with 93 countries. Its trade promotion authority participated in 91 international exhibitions and sent 11 trade delegations abroad in the last financial year, yet the country still has no registered Pakistani trade representative organisation or joint chamber in China. The absence of a formal Pakistani commercial organisation in China became a major point of concern before the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce, as senators questioned why Pakistan has not established a stronger private sector trade presence in one of its most important international markets. The committee, chaired by Senator Anusha Rahman, was told that no Pakistani joint chamber is currently registered in China and no Pakistani trade representative organisation is operating there. The Secretary Commerce said a Pakistani chamber could be established in China either as a joint chamber or as a branch, but it would have to meet the requirements set by Chinese authorities. He further explained that only one joint chamber from Pakistan could register itself in China under the relevant arrangements. Senators questioned why such an organisation had not been established despite the large scale business relationship between Pakistan and China. The Secretary Commerce said the reason could best be explained by the trade organisations themselves. The issue became more important when senators asked what real benefit Pakistan would gain from establishing a joint chamber or representative office. The Secretary Commerce said the Ministry of Commerce could not give a clear position on the matter and suggested that the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry and other chambers should provide their views. He said Pakistani private sector organisations could establish a chamber in major Chinese commercial centres such as Beijing or Shanghai, while the Ministry of Commerce would provide full support to interested chambers if they fulfilled Chinese requirements. Senator Anusha Rahman said a chamber could help Pakistani companies follow up more effectively on commercial opportunities in China. The discussion exposed a gap between Pakistan’s growing trade ambitions and its physical commercial presence in an important foreign market. The committee also examined the performance of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and its efforts to increase exports. The Chief Executive of TDAP said the authority was often blamed whenever Pakistan’s exports failed to grow, but export performance depended on several factors beyond the authority’s direct control. He pointed to production costs, electricity prices and the cost of financing as major factors affecting the ability of Pakistani businesses to compete in international markets. This means that simply sending trade delegations or participating in international exhibitions cannot guarantee higher exports if Pakistani products remain expensive to produce. The Commerce Minister, Jam Kamal Khan, told the committee that the Ministry of Commerce regularly sends policy proposals and recommendations to the government to improve the country’s trade environment. He said he had also proposed to the Prime Minister that reciprocal incentives should be pursued to increase exports. The minister said the Ministry of Commerce was working on new proposals to improve international marketing and increase Pakistani exports. He stressed that Pakistan could not become more competitive in international markets without dealing with the underlying costs faced by businesses and improving the investment environment. The figures presented by TDAP showed that the authority remained active in promoting Pakistani products abroad. During the last financial year, TDAP participated in 91 international exhibitions. The authority also organised or supported 11 trade delegations to foreign countries to search for new markets and strengthen business connections. Pakistan currently has preferential trade arrangements with 93 countries, giving Pakistani businesses access to special trade opportunities in international markets. However, the Senate committee stressed that trade agreements and international relationships must produce visible economic results. Members said Pakistan’s trade agreements should not remain only on paper. They should lead to higher exports, more investment and greater access for Pakistani businesses in foreign markets. The Chief Executive TDAP also clarified an important point about the authority’s financing. TDAP does not receive funding from the Export Development Fund. Instead, it receives government financing for specific projects. The committee also discussed the importance of stronger cooperation between Pakistani and Chinese institutions and private sector organisations. Senator Saleem Mandviwalla highlighted the role that Chinese international cooperation and trade specialists could play in developing stronger business and investment links. The discussion suggested that Pakistan needs to connect several areas of economic policy instead of treating export promotion as a separate activity. Lower production costs, cheaper and reliable electricity, easier access to finance, stronger investment policies, better international marketing and effective trade representation are all important if Pakistani companies are to compete successfully abroad. TDAP’s participation in 91 international exhibitions and 11 foreign trade delegations shows that the authority is actively trying to open doors for Pakistani exporters. But the Senate discussion also made clear that opening doors is only the first step. Pakistan must ensure that its businesses are able to walk through those doors with competitive products, attractive prices and the capacity to supply international buyers. The committee appreciated TDAP’s efforts but stressed the need for a coordinated national strategy linking trade policy, investment, industrial competitiveness, export promotion and overseas market representation.

    Islamabad / Karachi: The Sindh Healthcare Commission came under intense scrutiny in the Senate after lawmakers questioned its ability to control illegal medical practices and respond effectively to the growing HIV situation in Sindh. Senators raised concerns over delayed action, staff shortages, and legal weaknesses that they said were limiting the Commission’s performance. The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination chaired by Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti. The meeting was attended by Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Senator Nadeem Ahmed Bhutto, Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt, Senator Anusha Rehman Ahmad Khan through Zoom, Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani along with senior federal and provincial health officials. Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt questioned why FIRs had still not been registered against those responsible in connection with the HIV situation, while Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan expressed dissatisfaction over delays in action and questioned the role of the Sindh Healthcare Commission in preventing the spread of the disease. Responding to the Committee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sindh Healthcare Commission said the Commission had already registered several FIRs against medical quacks. However, he stated that weaknesses in the existing legal framework allowed many accused to obtain bail shortly after arrest. He informed the Committee that amendments to the law were being prepared to strengthen action against quackery. The CEO also disclosed that the Commission has only around 170 officials serving across the entire province, highlighting a serious shortage of human resources. Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri questioned why the Commission remained understaffed and asked whether the issue had been formally raised with the Sindh Government. Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal requested the Committee Chairman to issue directions so the matter could move forward. Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan stressed that the Government should acknowledge administrative shortcomings wherever they exist. He also asked how many times the Sindh Healthcare Commission had formally requested additional staff from the Provincial Government. The discussion also focused on the governance structure of the Commission. Members were informed that after the 18th Constitutional Amendment, the Sindh Health Department no longer exercises administrative control over the Sindh Healthcare Commission. Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal suggested that legislative measures should be considered to address governance-related issues affecting provincial institutions. The Committee also examined the appointment process for members of the Sindh Healthcare Commission Board. The Secretary Health informed members that the Department did not have the authority to appoint or remove Board members. Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri observed that such limitations weaken accountability, while Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt expressed concern that the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission was not administratively answerable to the Secretary Health. Earlier in the meeting, Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani informed the Committee that two inquiries had been conducted into the Valika Hospital incident, during which 37 officials were identified for disciplinary action. He said the inquiry findings had not been made public due to security considerations but assured the Committee that strict action would be taken against those found responsible. He also informed members that the Sindh Government had established a social security fund to support families affected by HIV.
