Thailand Officially Enters Rainy Season With Below-average Rainfall Forecast

BANGKOK, Thailand — Thailand officially entered its rainy season on Friday, May 15, though meteorological authorities have forecast below-average rainfall for much of the country, according to an announcement from the Meteorological Department on Thursday.

Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rain Warning For Thailand

Director-General Sukanyanee Yawinchan stated that the season’s formal commencement was determined by three key meteorological conditions: sustained rainfall covering at least 60% of upper Thailand, a shift in lower-level winds to a southwesterly direction, and upper-altitude winds turning easterly. With these criteria now met, the department has confirmed the seasonal transition.

“This year’s wet season across upper Thailand is expected to continue until approximately mid-October, while the eastern parts of the southern region will see rainfall extending into December,” Director-General Sukanyanee explained. “However, overall precipitation is projected to be about 10% lower than the historical seasonal average.”

The department’s forecast indicates that rainfall frequency will steadily increase through mid-June, particularly in the eastern region and the western parts of southern Thailand. From late June into July, however, both the frequency and intensity of rain are expected to diminish, potentially creating a temporary dry spell before precipitation resumes in August and September. Authorities have warned that the latter period warrants close monitoring for torrential rain, flash floods, forest runoff, and river overflow events.

A significant factor influencing this year’s weather patterns is the El Niño climate phenomenon, which the Meteorological Department is tracking closely. “El Niño is currently in a neutral condition,” Director-General Sukanyanee noted. “However, there is a possibility of a stronger El Niño developing in the second half of the year.”

Scientists have increasingly warned of a growing risk of a “Super El Niño” event later this year, which could bring particularly severe dry conditions to Southeast Asia. Such patterns historically correlate with reduced monsoon rainfall, elevated temperatures, and heightened agricultural stress across the region.

In addition to broader seasonal trends, the department anticipates that one or two tropical storms may approach Thailand during August and September, with the North and Northeast regions most likely to experience their effects. These systems could bring periods of intense rainfall even within an overall drier-than-average season.

To enhance preparedness for severe weather events, the Meteorological Department has established a dedicated monitoring center focused on heavy rain and strong winds in the Andaman Sea. The facility will provide real-time data and early warnings to support maritime safety, coastal community protection, and emergency response coordination.

“For residents, farmers, and businesses, understanding these seasonal patterns is essential for planning,” said a spokesperson for the department. “We encourage everyone to stay informed through official weather channels and to prepare for both wet and dry periods as conditions evolve.”

Thailand’s economy remains closely tied to agricultural cycles, with rice, rubber, and fruit production dependent on predictable monsoon patterns. Below-average rainfall could pose challenges for crop yields, water reservoir management, and rural livelihoods, prompting government agencies to review drought mitigation strategies and irrigation planning.

“The Ministry of Agriculture is coordinating with provincial authorities to ensure water resources are managed efficiently throughout the season,” said a representative from the ministry. “Farmers are advised to consult local extension offices for guidance on crop selection and water conservation techniques.”

Urban areas, including Bangkok, also face considerations related to seasonal rainfall. While reduced precipitation may lessen flood risks in some locations, intense downpours during tropical storm events can still overwhelm drainage systems and cause localized flooding. City planners have emphasized ongoing investments in infrastructure to improve resilience against variable weather conditions.

Brothers detained during raid In another operation in the northern Jordan Valley, Israeli forces detained two Palestinian brothers in the Ein al-Hilweh area, according to local sources cited by Anadolu. Meanwhile, Israeli troops raided the village of Tell, southwest of Nablus, and ordered residents to leave several homes ahead of the planned demolition of a house belonging to Palestinian Farouq Ramadan. Ramadan was killed on July 24 during an attack in the village, according to Palestinian sources. They said he had disarmed and killed one of the attackers before being shot dead. Three other members of his family were also killed and four Palestinians were injured during the incident, the sources said. Near Ramallah, agricultural land east of Jaljaliya village was also set on fire, Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported. Palestinian civil defence crews later brought the blaze under control. Village council head Osama Nazmi said an Israeli outpost had been established in the area about a year ago and that Palestinian homes belonging to residents from nearby Al-Mazraa Al-Sharqiya had subsequently been seized. New settlement plan raises alarm At the same time, Palestinian officials said Israel had advanced plans for a new settlement containing approximately 650 housing units south of Jerusalem. The Palestinian Jerusalem Governorate said Israel’s District Planning and Building Committee had deposited the plan for the proposed “Nofei Rachel” settlement. The project would cover approximately 27 dunams, or 6.7 acres, near Palestinian homes, according to the governorate. Palestinian authorities warned that the consequences would extend beyond the construction of the housing units, arguing that the development could affect Palestinian movement, urban growth and the ability of local communities to expand. They described the plan as part of a broader Israeli policy of expanding settlements and restricting Palestinian development. According to the report, Shin Bet chief David Zini supports retaining the bodies in case Israeli citizens are captured or disappear in the future. The Israeli military is also reportedly supportive of the position. Haaretz reported that most of the remains are believed to belong to Palestinians from Gaza who participated in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel or subsequent fighting. However, the newspaper also reported that some of the bodies belong to Palestinians who were not involved in combat. The issue has raised legal questions inside Israel. Legal experts cited by Haaretz questioned whether authorities have the power to retain the remains of Palestinians who have not been proven to have taken part in fighting. The Palestinian National Campaign for the Retrieval of Martyrs’ Bodies and Disclosure of the Fate of the Missing said in October 2025 that Israel was holding around 1,500 bodies of Palestinians from Gaza at the Sde Teiman military facility in southern Israel. A crisis extending beyond borders The developments in the West Bank are unfolding against the backdrop of the devastating Gaza conflict.     Punjab cybercrime crackdown, 28 suspects arrested

    LAHORE: Authorities have arrested 28 suspects in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan as part of a major crackdown on organised online fraud, exposing alleged schemes that relied on impersonation, fake investment opportunities and fabricated official identities to deceive citizens. The arrests were made during a province-wide operation by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab, directed by Punjab Director Muhammad Ali Wasim, officials said. Investigators also seized 24 mobile phones and a laptop, which are now being examined for evidence that could lead to other members of the alleged network. The investigation has revealed how fraudsters allegedly manipulated trust to convince victims to hand over large sums of money. Millions allegedly lost in Lahore scam In Lahore, 18 suspects were arrested in separate operations. Investigators said the suspects allegedly impersonated relatives, visa agents, government officials and personnel associated with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority. In one case, suspects allegedly posed as both a relative and a visa agent and persuaded a victim to transfer Rs25.86 million. The case has highlighted how scammers can combine apparently familiar identities with urgent requests to make their schemes appear legitimate. Rs54.66m trading fraud uncovered Three suspects were arrested in Faisalabad in connection with alleged online trading fraud and unauthorised access to a company email account. According to investigators, a victim was shown fabricated trading records, digital-wallet balances and purported profit statements to create the impression that substantial returns were being generated. After being persuaded to invest, the victim allegedly lost Rs54.66 million, investigators said. The case demonstrates the growing sophistication of investment scams, where criminals allegedly use manipulated digital information to make fraudulent platforms appear genuine. Multan arrests expose impersonation tactics In Multan, seven suspects were arrested for allegedly posing as relatives, bank employees and individuals claiming to be based in Britain. Officials said victims were approached with various demands, including payments supposedly required for prize money, customs clearance, taxes and visa renewals. Such tactics typically create a sense of urgency, leaving victims with little time to verify the identity of the caller or the authenticity of the demand. Digital evidence now under forensic examination NCCIA investigators are examining the seized devices through forensic analysis. Financial transactions, call records and digital communications are also being reviewed to establish the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other people who may be connected to it. The crackdown comes amid growing concern over online financial fraud in Pakistan. The NCCIA’s own statistics identify financial fraud as a major category of reported cybercrime. The latest arrests underscore a simple but increasingly important warning: an apparently familiar voice, official-looking message or promising investment opportunity may not be what it seems. During a background briefing with journalists on Wednesday, the embassy official said Washington considers Pakistan a key partner in the global race for critical minerals that are essential for advanced technologies, clean energy, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and defence manufacturing. According to the official, the US government is encouraging American investors to explore Pakistan’s untapped mineral resources, ranging from large-scale copper and gold projects to smaller mining ventures worth only a few million dollars. US Prepared to Finance Another Mega Project The official said the US administration is ready to support another project comparable to the multibillion-dollar Reko Diq development if geological surveys and feasibility studies demonstrate strong commercial potential. He added that financing support could be extended through US institutions such as the Export-Import (Exim) Bank and the Development Finance Corporation, both of which are playing a growing role in securing global supply chains for critical minerals. The official noted that American companies are not only interested in major mining investments but are also examining opportunities to acquire, develop and expand smaller mining operations across Pakistan. Reko Diq Progress Continues Despite Delays Discussing the Reko Diq copper and gold project, the official acknowledged that work is progressing, although at a slower pace than initially anticipated. He explained that project costs are currently being reassessed, after which developers will return to financiers to finalize the remaining funding package. The first phase of the Reko Diq project is estimated to cost around $7.7 billion, while the US Exim Bank has already offered $1.25 billion in financing. However, the overall financial structure remains under discussion. The project has experienced delays due to rising construction costs and security concerns in Balochistan, prompting project stakeholders to revise cost estimates more than once. Earlier this year, Barrick Gold, which owns a 50 percent stake in the project, also reviewed development timelines because of increasing costs and security-related challenges. Major Economic Benefits Expected The embassy official said Reko Diq has the potential to transform Pakistan’s economy once it becomes fully operational. According to the estimates shared during the briefing, the project could generate nearly $2 billion in annual free cash flow. Of this amount, around $500 million would go directly to the Government of Balochistan, while another $500 million would benefit Pakistan’s state-owned enterprises. The official further stated that Pakistan’s mining sector currently contributes roughly 3 percent to the country’s economy, while Reko Diq alone could increase national GDP by approximately 0.5 percentage points, highlighting its significance for long-term economic growth. Critical Minerals Becoming Strategic Priority The US official emphasized that critical minerals have become a top strategic priority for Washington as demand continues to rise across technology, renewable energy and defence sectors. Pakistan possesses commercially attractive reserves of copper, antimony, tungsten and several other minerals considered essential for future industries. He said American companies believe Pakistan has enormous untapped potential, particularly as global demand for copper is expected to rise sharply over the coming decades. The official added that US firms are actively seeking long-term supply agreements for minerals extracted from Pakistani mines, while some investors are interested in purchasing and developing smaller mining assets. Investment Opportunities Across Pakistan Besides Balochistan, American investors are also exploring mineral opportunities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, particularly for copper deposits, while rare earth mineral prospects in Gilgit-Baltistan have also attracted attention. The official said the United States is searching globally for around 60 critical minerals needed for emerging technologies, many of which are found in Pakistan. He noted that several companies have already begun exploration and extraction activities in different regions of the country. Security Remains the Biggest Challenge Despite strong investment interest, the official acknowledged that security remains one of the most significant obstacles facing mining projects in Pakistan. He said US companies fully understand the risks associated with operating in regions such as Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa but remain willing to invest if appropriate security arrangements are provided. The official stressed that the Pakistani government should continue strengthening security measures and facilitating investors to ensure long-term success of mining projects. He added that American companies are encouraged to partner with local firms, which possess valuable experience in navigating operational and security challenges in remote mining areas. US Calls for Transparent Investment Environment The embassy official also urged Pakistan to maintain a transparent, predictable and competitive investment climate to attract greater foreign investment into the mineral sector. He noted that Pakistan’s participation in the US Critical Minerals Initiative earlier this year reflects growing cooperation between the two countries in securing future mineral supply chains. According to the official, if exploration and investment continue at the current pace, Pakistan’s mining industry could emerge as one of the country’s strongest economic sectors over the next 10 to 20 years, creating employment, increasing exports and significantly boosting national revenues.
