Songkran Road Toll at 71, With 317 Injured After Two Days

BANGKOK — Seventy-one people have been killed and 317 others injured in traffic accidents during the first two days of the Songkran festival holiday period, according to figures released by the Ministry of Public Health on Sunday.

Twenty Road Fatalities on First ‘Dangerous Day’ of Songkran Holidays

The victims were involved in 344 traffic accidents recorded on Friday and Saturday, said Dr. Sophon Iamsirithaworn, deputy permanent secretary for public health. While any loss of life remains deeply troubling, the figures represent a significant decrease from the same period last year, when officials reported 214 accidents with 32 deaths and 200 injuries on the first day alone.

Nan province, in the north, reported the highest number of accidents with 17. Nan and Lampang, also a northern province, each recorded 17 injured traffic victims, the highest toll nationwide. The highest death toll was shared by Prachin Buri and Phitsanulok province, with four fatalities each.

On Saturday alone, there were 208 traffic accidents nationwide, causing 50 fatalities and leaving 185 people injured. The most common cause of accidents was attributed to speeding, accounting for 45 percent of incidents, followed by drink driving at 25 percent. Motorcycles continued to be the most vulnerable mode of transport, involved in 61 percent of all accidents.

Dr. Sophon noted that most Songkran travellers had already reached their destinations as the traditional New Year celebrations got underway. The Songkran road safety campaign remains in effect for the remainder of the “seven dangerous days” holiday period, with authorities continuing to set up checkpoints and enforce traffic laws in an effort to reduce further casualties. Officials have again urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid speeding and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as millions of Thais travel across the country to celebrate with family in their hometowns.

    The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued the judges’ roster for the sixth week of its summer vacation. The new roster will come into effect from August 10. It will cover proceedings at the principal seat in Lahore and the court’s regional benches. According to the roster, two division benches at the Lahore Principal Seat will hear appeals from Monday. Four judges will also work as single benches and hear cases of different categories. A two-member division bench headed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum will hear appeals of all types. Another two-member division bench headed by Justice Sadiq Mahmood Khurram will also hear appeals in different categories. Chief Justice Aalia Neelum will also hear petitions as a single bench. She will deal with applications and petitions of various kinds during the week. Justice Shahid Karim will hear civil matters. Justice Sadiq Mahmood Khurram will deal with criminal petitions. Justice Syed Ahsan Raza Kazmi will hear civil petitions of different categories. The arrangement has been made to ensure that important cases continue to be heard during the summer recess. The roster also includes arrangements for the LHC’s regional benches. Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad will hear cases as a single bench at the Bahawalpur Bench. Justice Khalid Ishaq will perform the same role at the Multan Bench. At the Rawalpindi Bench, Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan will hear cases as a single bench. The issuance of the roster will allow the high court to continue judicial proceedings during the sixth week of summer vacations. The scheduled benches will hear appeals, petitions and other cases according to their assigned jurisdictions.

    President Zardari, Malaysian minister discuss trad…

The two sides also discussed ways to increase bilateral trade and expand economic relations between Pakistan and Malaysia. President Zardari called for greater market access for Pakistani products in Malaysia. He said there is demand in the Malaysian market for Pakistani rice, potatoes, wheat, poultry products and animal feed. He stressed that both countries should work to further strengthen trade links and facilitate the exchange of goods. During the meeting, Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail noted that 2026 marks the 69th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Malaysia. He said 14 weekly flights are currently operating between the two countries, while efforts are underway to increase the number of air connections. Improved connectivity, he noted, could contribute to stronger people-to-people contacts, tourism, business activity and bilateral trade. The meeting also covered ways to deepen institutional links between the two countries. Both sides expressed their commitment to using the Malaysian minister’s visit to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between relevant institutions. The discussions reflected a shared interest in expanding Pakistan-Malaysia cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic ties, particularly in security, immigration, trade and institutional coordination.

    Attaullah Tarar accuses PTI of violent politics

    Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has accused Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of pursuing a politics of violence. In a statement, Tarar said the Mall Road incident in Rawalpindi had brought several issues to light. He alleged that PTI supporters arrive at protests carrying weapons. He said a security official was fired upon in broad daylight on Mall Road in Rawalpindi. According to Tarar, the incident was another example of what he described as PTI’s politics of violence. The federal minister further alleged that the purpose of PTI protests was to disrupt law and order and create unrest in the country. Tarar said the party’s objective behind protests was to create anarchy and instability in Pakistan. He also claimed that PTI was unable to accept the country’s development and progress. His remarks came after the Mall Road shooting in Rawalpindi, where a man identified as Muhammad Hussain was killed after allegedly opening fire at security forces, according to police.

    NAB recovers record Rs5.4 trillion in six months

    The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has announced record recoveries worth Rs5.414 trillion during the first six months of 2026, describing it as the highest six-month recovery in the institution’s history. According to an official statement, the bureau recovered Rs2.452 trillion during the second quarter alone, significantly increasing the overall recovery figure for the first half of the year. Among regional offices, NAB Sukkur recorded the highest overall recoveries. Meanwhile, NAB Balochistan reclaimed 209,544 acres of forest and state land valued at Rs604.64 billion, including areas linked to Hingol National Park and land belonging to the Gwadar Industrial Estate Development Authority (GIEDA). In Karachi, the anti-corruption watchdog recovered 11,422 acres of illegally allotted government land and disputed housing society leases worth Rs467.11 billion. The Lahore bureau reclaimed 1,909 acres of state and PCBL land valued at Rs288.29 billion, while the Islamabad/Rawalpindi office recovered 810 acres of CDA amenity plots in various housing societies, with an estimated value of Rs66.63 billion. NAB also reported progress in housing and financial fraud cases. The bureau said more than 24,365 victims received compensation through the return of recovered money and assets worth Rs42.303 billion. The accountability body said the recoveries reflect its continued efforts to retrieve public assets, restore illegally occupied state land, and provide financial relief to citizens affected by fraud and corruption
