Thai Immigration Announces Emergency Measures for Stranded Tourists

BANGKOK — Thai authorities have announced exceptional immigration measures for thousands of foreign tourists stranded in the kingdom due to the closure of Middle Eastern airspace, which has prevented many travelers from departing the country amid escalating regional conflict.

AOT Confirms Airports Operating Normally as 134 Flights Affected by Middle East Unrest

The Immigration Bureau has implemented special provisions effective immediately for affected foreign nationals, waiving overstay penalties and offering temporary stay extensions until the situation normalizes.

Who Is Affected?

The measures apply to foreign nationals whose authorized stay in Thailand expires on or after February 28, 2026, and who are unable to leave the country due to flight cancellations and airspace closures resulting from the Middle East crisis.

Two Options Available

Option 1: Leaving Thailand

For tourists who wish to depart the kingdom, authorities have waived the overstay fine entirely. No penalty will be applied to affected travelers who have been unable to leave due to circumstances beyond their control.

Option 2: Temporary Stay

For those who wish to remain in Thailand temporarily while awaiting flight resumption, the initial fine is processed by Immigration, and travelers may apply for a temporary stay extension of up to 30 days at a time.

Required Documents for Extension

Tourists seeking to extend their stay must submit the following documentation:

  • Form TM.7 (application for extension of temporary stay in the kingdom)

  • Copy of passport or travel document

  • Explanatory letter or justification of necessity

  • Forms STM.2, STM.2/1, and STM.9

Duration of Measures

The exceptional measures are effective immediately and will remain in effect until the situation returns to normal or the measures are modified by subsequent announcements. Thai authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with relevant agencies to assist affected travelers.

Tourism industry representatives have praised the swift response, noting that the measures help maintain Thailand’s reputation as a tourist-friendly destination even during international crises.     Prices of several essential commodities have increased significantly across Pakistan over the past year, putting additional pressure on household budgets. According to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), major increases were recorded in the prices of several food items and fuel products. Onion prices recorded the highest increase among the commodities listed by the statistics agency. The price of onions rose by 132.52% in one year. Tomato prices also increased sharply by 93.21%, while flour became 62.25% more expensive during the same period. Fuel prices also witnessed substantial increases. According to the PBS, LPG became 51.69% more expensive over the year. Diesel prices increased by 33.08%, while petrol became 27.65% more expensive. The rise in fuel prices can also affect transportation and the cost of goods and services. Several meat and fruit prices also increased during the year. The price of bananas rose by 17.66%, while mutton became 15.98% more expensive. Beef prices increased by 13.54%, adding to the cost of commonly consumed food items. However, some essential commodities became cheaper during the same period. Potato prices declined by 30%, while sugar became 19.10% cheaper. Chicken prices also decreased by 17.68%, providing some relief to consumers. The statistics also showed a decline in the prices of eggs and pulses. Egg prices fell by 17.41% over the year, while chana dal became more than 13% cheaper. Masoor dal prices declined by 12.29%, while jaggery became 6% cheaper. The latest figures show mixed price trends in the country. While consumers received some relief from lower prices of potatoes, sugar, chicken, eggs and pulses, sharp increases in onions, tomatoes, flour and fuel continued to add pressure to household expenses. The data highlights the significant changes in the prices of everyday necessities over the past year.

    President delays assent for 19 high court judges

    The appointment of 19 additional judges to four high courts remains pending as President Asif Ali Zardari has yet to approve the summary. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved the nominations during meetings held on July 20 and 21. The proposed appointments involve the Lahore High Court, Sindh High Court, Balochistan High Court and Islamabad High Court. Nine days have passed since the JCP approved the nominations. However, the president has not yet given his assent to the summary. The delay has caused concern within the government. A senior cabinet member questioned why the approval had not yet been granted. The official argued that the summary was initiated by the JCP rather than the prime minister. Therefore, according to the government’s position, the president could not send it back to the prime minister for reconsideration. The official also warned that continued inaction could create further tension within the superior judiciary. The government’s legal team is reportedly examining possible options to address the issue. The matter has also exposed differences between the government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). According to government officials, the PPP leadership is unhappy with the JCP because some of its preferred nominees were not considered for judicial appointments. The PPP had shown particular interest in securing the appointment of two candidates to the Sindh High Court. However, neither the judicial nor executive members of the JCP supported their nominations. Officials said the candidates were below the age of 45. Both government and judicial representatives reportedly agreed that nominees below that age should not be approved. PPP Senator Farooq H Naek, a senior legal figure and member of the JCP, had proposed 33 candidates for the four high courts. His proposed list included 16 candidates for the Sindh High Court, 10 for the Lahore High Court, five for the Balochistan High Court and two for the Islamabad High Court. A member of the commission said the PPP could potentially have secured appointments for other candidates from interior Sindh. Some of those candidates were considered sympathetic to the party. However, the commission member claimed that the party’s insistence on its two preferred nominees affected the outcome. The dispute comes amid wider political and judicial developments involving Sindh. JCP judicial members have already reached a consensus on the performance of constitutional benches in the Sindh High Court. The judges serving on those benches were given three months to demonstrate their performance. The commission’s judicial members also opposed the confirmation of Sindh High Court Additional Judge Syed Fiaz ul Hassan Shah. The development was viewed by some political circles as another setback for the PPP. The party has historically sought influence over judicial appointments in Sindh and other provinces. Last year, the PPP was able to influence appointments in several high courts, including the Sindh High Court, Peshawar High Court and Lahore High Court. The judicial landscape has also changed following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. After the amendment, Justice K K Agha was elevated to the newly established Federal Constitutional Court. Another judge of the Sindh High Court was transferred to the Islamabad High Court.

According to the sources, 82 of the court’s 125 member states voted in favour of the prosecutor’s removal. Khan, 56, denies any wrongdoing, and his lawyers have called the decision by the court’s governing body unlawful, procedurally unfair, and unsupported by evidence. The vote comes amid renewed US criticism of the war crimes court, which Washington sees as a threat to its sovereignty. During a visit to the Philippines on Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there were “lunatics and crazies involved in the ICC,” reiterating previous criticism. The US, which is not a member of the ICC, has already imposed sanctions on 11 ICC judges and prosecutors, including Khan, citing the ICC’s arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, and a past probe into US troops in Afghanistan. Officials from the court’s governing body have said Khan should be dismissed because he committed serious misconduct by having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a junior staff member, according to documents seen by Reuters. Khan’s lawyers have denied the allegations, stating that he denied “any sexual relationship of any kind” with the staff member. France said on Thursday it would vote in favour of Khan’s removal. For Khan to be fired, an absolute majority of at least 63 of the court’s 125 member states had to agree in the secret ballot. The dismissal will be seen by his supporters as the result of political pressure after the prosecutor sought arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials for alleged war crimes. Even if Khan had survived the vote, his position would have been weakened, giving critics of the court another stick to beat it with. Khan’s firing immediately triggers the election process for a new ICC prosecutor, who is not expected to be voted in before next year. Any active ICC warrants will remain in place even if Khan is dismissed, as only ICC judges have the authority to withdraw warrants. The decision to dismiss Khan marks a significant moment for the ICC, which has faced growing scrutiny and criticism in recent years. The outcome of the vote reflects the deep divisions among member states over the court’s leadership and its role in international justice.
