Abu Dhabi Police warn residents about rise in salary day online scams

Abu Dhabi Police have warned residents to stay alert as cybercriminals increase online fraud attempts around monthly salary payment periods. Officials said scammers often take advantage of the time when many people receive their salaries by using fake offers and deceptive schemes to steal money, banking details, and personal information.

According to the police, fraudsters are creating fake promotions, counterfeit websites, and misleading online advertisements designed to appear genuine. They urged residents to deal only with trusted companies and verified service providers and to be cautious of offers that seem unusually attractive or promise unrealistic benefits.

Authorities identified several scams that have recently become more common. These include fake advertisements for villas, holiday homes, and chalets, fraudulent residency visa services, counterfeit job offers, and fake recruitment agencies claiming to provide employment opportunities. Police also warned about unauthorized insurance plans and false advertisements offering vehicles allegedly seized by Abu Dhabi Customs.

Scammers are also targeting buyers with fake listings for vehicle registration plates and luxury watches sold at heavily discounted prices. In addition, authorities highlighted fraudulent investment schemes that promise exceptionally high returns in a short period, a tactic commonly used to convince victims to hand over their savings.

Police said criminals are increasingly using fake websites that imitate government departments and well known organizations to trick people into revealing sensitive information. Other scams involve persuading victims to install remote access software on their phones or computers, allowing fraudsters to gain access to personal data and banking accounts.

Residents were also warned about requests for advance payments for products or services that do not exist. These include fake training courses, certificates, event tickets, and online shopping offers where the promised goods are never delivered after payment is made.

Abu Dhabi Police strongly advised the public never to share banking information, passwords, or one time passwords with anyone, regardless of the reason given. Officials stressed that banks and government agencies do not ask customers to disclose such confidential information through phone calls, text messages, or online links.

Authorities also encouraged residents to verify the identity of sellers and service providers before transferring money or making advance payments. They recommended accessing government services only through official websites and authorized mobile applications instead of clicking on links found through search engines or social media advertisements.

Anyone who suspects they have encountered a scam or comes across suspicious online activity is urged to report it immediately through Abu Dhabi Police’s Aman service. Prompt reporting allows investigators to respond more quickly, prevent additional victims from being targeted, and strengthen efforts to combat cybercrime across the community.

Police emphasized that staying cautious, verifying information before making payments, and protecting personal banking details are the most effective ways to avoid falling victim to online fraud, particularly during salary periods when scammers are most active.

HYDERABAD: The prices of wheat and flour have witnessed a fresh increase in Hyderabad, putting additional pressure on household budgets and raising concerns among consumers already struggling with rising food costs. According to market sources, flour is currently being sold at prices ranging between Rs135 and Rs145 per kilogram in different parts of the city. The increase has triggered concern among citizens, particularly low- and middle-income families, who rely on flour as a staple food item. Flour mill owners said the price of a 10-kilogram flour bag has risen from Rs1,350 to Rs1,450, marking an increase of Rs100. They attributed the latest rise primarily to higher wheat prices in the open market. The price of wheat has also recorded a significant increase. According to grain market traders, the price of a 100-kilogram wheat sack has climbed from Rs10,800 to Rs11,800, reflecting an increase of around Rs1,000. Traders said fluctuations in wheat prices in the open market were directly affecting flour prices, leaving millers with little option but to revise their rates. Citizens have expressed frustration over the continued increase in the prices of essential food items. They urged the authorities to monitor wheat and flour markets and take effective measures to prevent unnecessary price hikes. Consumers also called for stronger market oversight and action against profiteering so that essential food commodities remain available at affordable prices.

Law minister explains rules on Imran Khan’s pris…

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar has defended the government’s position on meetings with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in prison. He said matters that are pending before the courts should generally not be debated in parliament. However, he noted that the Senate was discussing such issues. Tarar made the remarks during a Senate session. Lawmakers were debating Imran Khan’s health and concerns over restrictions on meetings with him. The minister said cases related to the May 9 incidents and other cases involving Imran Khan were before the courts. He said the PTI founder and other individuals had filed appeals against decisions in their cases. According to Tarar, several legal matters remain pending before different judicial forums. He said the delay in deciding appeals and cases was a broader problem within the judicial system. The law minister pointed to delays in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cases. He said some NAB appeals had remained undecided for as long as six years. He said Imran Khan’s petitions and applications were also pending before the relevant courts. Therefore, he argued, those matters should be addressed through the judicial process. Tarar also referred to the cases involving former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. He said Sharif had been convicted by the courts and later challenged the decisions through appeals. He added that relief was subsequently granted to Sharif by the judiciary itself. The minister said this showed that legal disputes should be settled through the courts. The Senate debate also focused on Imran Khan’s access to visitors in prison. Tarar said prison authorities had to follow the jail manual. He said the rules applied to all prisoners and could not be changed for one individual. He argued that if special permission was given to one prisoner, similar requests from other prisoners would also have to be considered. The minister said the government wanted a system in which everyone was treated equally before the law. He referred to the principle that the powerful and ordinary citizens should stand on the same footing. His remarks came after opposition lawmakers demanded that the Senate discuss Imran Khan’s health and the restrictions on meetings with him. Senator Raja Nasir Abbas had specifically called for a discussion on the PTI founder’s health. The issue has remained a major point of political disagreement between the government and PTI. The opposition has repeatedly raised concerns about Imran Khan’s health and access to family members, lawyers and political leaders. Tarar maintained that the government’s position was based on existing legal and prison procedures. He said pending court cases should not be settled through political debate.

Elon Musk aims to release AI-generated ‘The Odyssey’ in 2026

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to produce a full-length artificial intelligence-generated adaptation of “The Odyssey” before the end of 2026, signalling a major step in the use of AI technology in the film industry. Musk shared the announcement on his social media platform X, where he said that Grok Imagine, the AI video-generation system developed by his company xAI, would create a complete feature film based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic. According to Musk, the project will aim to remain historically accurate while staying faithful to the original literary work. He said the AI-generated film would present the classic story in a way that reflects Homer’s vision. The announcement came shortly after the successful release of filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s live-action adaptation of The Odyssey, which performed strongly at the global box office during its opening weekend. Musk has previously expressed criticism of Nolan’s interpretation of the famous epic, and his latest announcement is widely viewed as an alternative approach using artificial intelligence. The proposal has attracted widespread attention across social media, with technology enthusiasts and film fans debating whether AI can produce feature-length movies capable of matching traditional filmmaking. Supporters believe advances in artificial intelligence are transforming the entertainment industry. They argue that AI-generated video technology has improved rapidly and could reduce production costs while making filmmaking faster and more accessible. Many users praised the capabilities of AI-generated characters and visual effects, saying recent improvements have produced increasingly realistic performances and cinematic quality. However, others questioned whether artificial intelligence can replace human creativity. Critics argued that while AI may be useful for technical production, it still struggles to create emotionally powerful stories, memorable characters, and original artistic ideas. They believe experienced writers, directors, and actors remain essential to producing high-quality films. The announcement has intensified the broader debate about the growing role of artificial intelligence in creative industries. Experts say AI is becoming increasingly capable of assisting with scriptwriting, visual effects, editing, animation, and content production, but concerns remain over originality, copyright, employment, and the future of creative professions. Musk’s project also highlights the increasing competition among technology companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Companies around the world are racing to develop more advanced AI systems capable of producing videos, films, music, and other digital content with minimal human involvement.
