AJK rejects firing allegations against forces

The Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has strongly rejected allegations that security forces opened fire on protesters or were responsible for civilian deaths during the recent unrest in Rawalakot, describing the claims as false, unverified and part of an organised disinformation campaign.

Responding to a report by the BBC on the recent incidents, the AJK government said armed members of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee opened fire on security personnel in Rawalakot, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several officers. It also alleged that the attackers set multiple vehicles on fire during the violence.

According to the government, security forces acted only to maintain law and order and enforce the law, insisting that civilians were not deliberately targeted during the operation.

The AJK government cited information from the police spokesperson, who said seven security personnel were killed and 143 others were injured in firing allegedly carried out by armed members of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee.

It further claimed that the banned group has a history of violent activities. According to the statement, attacks carried out in 2024 and 2025 resulted in the deaths of four security personnel and left hundreds of others injured.

The government also said two individuals arrested on July 28 and 29 were under investigation. It alleged that one of the suspects claimed a reward of Rs10 million had been offered for the killing of each Ranger, raising questions about the possible funding of the group.

According to the statement, verified videos show armed individuals linked to the banned Joint Awami Action Committee using modern weapons and firing during the unrest.

The AJK government maintained that law enforcement agencies carried out their constitutional responsibilities with restraint and professionalism. It insisted that no action was taken against peaceful civilians and that operations were conducted solely to restore public order.

The government also categorically denied allegations of indiscriminate firing, the use of snipers or claims that bodies of victims were withheld from their families.

It further alleged that the banned Joint Awami Action Committee had previously been involved in blocking roads, stopping or burning cargo vehicles and disrupting the supply of essential goods. According to the statement, law enforcement agencies made efforts to keep roads open and ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential supplies.

The AJK government added that the Joint Awami Action Committee has been declared a banned organisation under the Anti-Terrorism Act and said all legal proceedings against the group are being carried out in accordance with the law.

Khawaja Asif accuses PTI of supporting PPP candida…

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has claimed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supported candidates of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) during the recent elections. He alleged that in several constituencies, it appeared that both political parties had made joint efforts to influence the electoral outcome. Khawaja Asif stated that there were visible signs of cooperation between PTI and PPP in certain areas. According to him, the political activities and election strategies of both parties suggested that they were working together against other candidates. However, he did not provide specific evidence to support his claim. The Defence Minister said that he had been observing elections in Azad Kashmir for the past 55 years and had witnessed many political developments over different periods. He described the current election as significant, particularly because voter participation in urban areas was higher compared to previous elections. Khawaja Asif praised the efforts of his party’s workers, saying that they had worked hard during the election campaign. He claimed that the increased voter turnout in cities reflected greater public engagement and interest in the electoral process. He stated that urban areas recorded a turnout of more than 45 percent, describing it as an important achievement. According to Asif, the higher participation rate demonstrated that voters had actively participated in the democratic process and responded positively to his party’s campaign efforts. While discussing the performance of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Khawaja Asif claimed that the party’s popularity had declined among voters. He pointed out that the PPP had last won an election from the city in 1970, suggesting that the party had lost much of its previous political influence in the region. Asif argued that the current political landscape in Azad Kashmir was different from previous decades. He suggested that changing voter preferences and recent electoral trends indicated that political support for traditional parties had shifted over time. The Defence Minister’s remarks came amid political debate following the Azad Kashmir elections, where opposition parties raised concerns about the fairness of the electoral process. The PPP and other opposition groups have alleged irregularities, while government representatives have defended the transparency of the elections. Khawaja Asif maintained that his party’s success was the result of extensive political efforts and public support. He credited party workers for their dedication and said that the election outcome reflected the changing political dynamics of the region. The allegations regarding PTI’s support for PPP candidates have added another layer to the ongoing political discussions. Both PTI and PPP have their own positions regarding the election process, and any claims of coordination between them remain a subject of political debate. As the political situation develops, statements from different parties are expected to continue shaping discussions about the election results, voter trends, and the future direction of politics in Azad Kashmir.

Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf attended the ceremony. The president and prime minister, along with the military leadership, stood respectfully as the national anthem was played by a military band. The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. A video highlighting the concept, construction and development of the monument was also screened for the guests. A large contingent of personnel from the armed forces, paramilitary forces and police presented a guard of honour. The display was accompanied by a military band and reflected the participation of Pakistan’s security institutions in the national ceremony. The event was attended by senior military officers, federal ministers, political leaders, diplomats and other high-ranking officials. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Chairman Senate, Defence Minister, Foreign Minister and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz were among those present. Governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also attended. Police contingents from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan participated in the ceremony. Units representing Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also part of the event. The monument commemorates Pakistan’s military confrontation with India in May. According to the Pakistani state narrative, the conflict began after the April 22 Pahalgam attack and culminated in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos before a ceasefire was reached between the two countries on May 10. Pakistan has referred to the episode as “Marka-i-Haq,” or the “Battle of Truth.” The inauguration brought together the country’s political and military leadership and carried a strong message of national unity and patriotism.

Gigi Hadid breaks silence after secret wedding rumours

Gigi Hadid has made a fresh social media appearance after recently grabbing attention with a wedding ring during a public outing with her boyfriend, Bradley Cooper. The supermodel, who was previously in a relationship with singer Zayn Malik, returned to Instagram on Sunday, August 9, sharing a series of photos that gave fans a glimpse into her summer days with her daughter, Khai. The update came just days after Gigi and Bradley fueled speculation that they may have secretly tied the knot. The 31-year-old model appeared to be enjoying a relaxed summer getaway with family and friends. Among the first pictures she shared was a sweet beach moment featuring Gigi alongside her younger sister, Bella Hadid. Both sisters looked effortlessly stylish as they posed together while enjoying the sunny surroundings. Another photo showed Gigi spending time with a close friend on a yacht, while their daughters were seen wearing matching swimsuits. The collection of images also captured several warm mother-daughter moments, highlighting how the model has been making the most of her summer break with Khai. Gigi’s post quickly attracted significant attention from her millions of followers. While many fans praised the beautiful summer snapshots, others could not help but notice how much Khai has grown. Several followers took to the comments section to express their surprise at seeing the little girl looking noticeably older. Fans described Khai as “so big” and shared their amazement at how quickly she appears to be growing up. The Instagram update also gave Gigi an opportunity to shift the focus away from the recent wedding speculation and toward her personal life and time with her daughter. Rumours surrounding Gigi and Bradley intensified earlier this month when the couple were spotted together in Paris. On Monday, August 3, the pair were photographed walking hand in hand through the French capital, with their jewellery immediately catching the attention of fans. Both appeared to be wearing rings on their hands, leading to widespread speculation that they may have secretly exchanged wedding vows. However, neither Gigi nor Bradley has publicly confirmed that they are married. The couple, who have reportedly been romantically linked since 2023, have generally kept their relationship away from the spotlight. Their rare public appearances have therefore continued to attract considerable attention. Gigi’s ring also became a major talking point among fans. The jewellery reportedly features 33 quarter-carat diamonds set alongside 18-karat yellow and white gold in a Grosgrain design. The ring has been reported to cost around $6,450. Despite the growing speculation, Gigi has not addressed the marriage rumours directly. Instead, her latest Instagram post focused on her summer memories, family and daughter. For now, fans will have to wait for Gigi or Bradley to confirm whether the rings were simply jewellery or a sign of a secret wedding.
