Gilas Pilipinas misses quarters as Asian Games title defense dashed by China

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas’ Asian Games title defense came to a humiliating end at the hands of an opponent determined to settle the score.

The Philippines suffered an early exit and failed to reach the quarterfinals following a crushing 105-61 loss to China at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, Japan, on Monday, September 14.

Needing to avoid a loss of more than 37 points to advance, the Filipinos were instead battered by 44 points and finished third in Group C with a 1-2 record as China found some semblance of vengeance for its stinging one-point defeat to the Philippines in the semifinals of the 2023 edition.

By failing to make the quarterfinals, Gilas Pilipinas crashed to its worst finish in Asian Games history, worse than its seventh-place showing in 2014.

Calvin Oftana and Sedrick Barefield showed the way with 13 and 9 points, respectively, but their efforts were not enough against the taller and more cohesive Team Dragon, who made sure to eliminate Gilas Pilipinas.

Going into the game, the Philippines held the inside track for one of the quarterfinals spots reserved for the two best third-place teams, thanks to its superior +27 point differential — well ahead of Group B’s Jordan (-5) and Group A’s Saudi Arabia (-11).

China, however, blew the game wide open early, racing to a commanding 36-16 lead after the opening quarter and then stretching it to 45 points late in the third period, 79-34.

A pair of three-pointers by Barefield and Don Trollano to end the third quarter, followed by a 6-2 spurt to open the fourth that cut the Philippines’ deficit to 46-81, briefly fueled hopes of meeting the 37-point threshold, but China pulled away again and mounted its biggest lead at 94-48 on a Li Yuezhou three-pointer with four minutes remaining.

Wang Junjie produced a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds, leading a balanced attack that saw seven Chinese players finish in double-figure scoring.

Liao Sanning tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, Hu Mingxuan chimed in 13 points and 4 assists, while former NBA player Cu Yongxi delivered 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists for China, which topped Group C with a perfect 3-0 record and an average winning margin of a whopping 42.7 points.

Trollano added 7 points in the loss, while Zavier Lucero and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser each scored 5 points and combined for 10 rebounds.

Aside from China, Bahrain advanced from Group C with a 2-1 record as it pulled off an 89-85 squeaker against the Philippines and beat winless Kazakhstan.

Gilas Pilipinas’ lone win came in a 109-78 drubbing of Kazakhstan.

The Scores

China 105 – Wang 20, Liao 14, Hu 13, Li 11, Jiao 11, Cui 10, Hu 10, Yu 9, Pang 7.

Casemiro joins Inter Miami as MLS launches transfer probe

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro has completed his move to Major League Soccer club Inter Miami after leaving Manchester United as a free agent. The experienced midfielder has signed with the American club, where he will play alongside Argentina captain Lionel Messi and several other international stars. The 34-year-old midfielder brings a wealth of experience to Inter Miami. During his career, he won five UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid and established himself as one of the world’s top defensive midfielders. He also represented Manchester United for four seasons after joining the English club from Real Madrid. Manchester United decided not to extend Casemiro’s contract at the end of the season, allowing him to leave as a free agent. Inter Miami quickly secured his signature as part of its strategy to strengthen the squad with experienced international players. Club officials welcomed Casemiro’s arrival and described the signing as another important step in their long-term project. They said the Brazilian’s leadership, experience, and winning mentality would help the team compete for more trophies in the coming seasons. After completing the move, Casemiro said the club’s ambition and future plans convinced him to join Inter Miami. He said he remains determined to win titles and contribute to the club’s continued growth. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham also welcomed the midfielder. He praised Casemiro’s successful career and said the Brazilian’s achievements at both club and international level would add valuable experience to the team. However, shortly after the transfer was announced, Major League Soccer confirmed it had opened an investigation into Inter Miami over allegations related to the signing. According to league officials, the investigation concerns the MLS “discovery rights” system. Under league rules, clubs must secure discovery rights before negotiating with certain high-profile players. Reports indicate that LA Galaxy previously held Casemiro’s discovery rights before Inter Miami completed the transfer. League officials said they are collecting all relevant information before deciding whether any rules were violated. They added that no further comments would be made until the investigation is complete. Reports also suggest that Inter Miami and LA Galaxy reached an agreement regarding Casemiro’s discovery rights. However, the financial details of that arrangement will only be made public after the investigation concludes. The latest inquiry is not the first involving Inter Miami’s transfer activities. In previous years, the club faced league sanctions following investigations into player registration and salary cap compliance. Casemiro’s arrival further strengthens an already star-studded Inter Miami squad featuring Lionel Messi and several internationally recognised players. Football analysts believe his experience, leadership, and defensive abilities could play a key role as the club aims to compete for more domestic and international honours.

Shaheen Shah Afridi leaves Lanka Premier League du…

Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has returned home after leaving the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to personal reasons. The left-arm pacer, who was representing the Kandy Royals in the tournament, departed from the event before its conclusion, ending his participation in the ongoing competition. During his time in the Lanka Premier League, Shaheen Afridi was also involved in a disagreement with his team management over his exclusion from the playing squad for a match on July 19. The incident reportedly created tension between the player and the franchise during the tournament. In the match against the Colombo Capitals, Shaheen Afridi was informed that he would be used as an impact player. However, his name was not included in the official team sheet submitted for the match. The omission reportedly upset the Pakistani fast bowler, who expressed his disappointment over the situation. The issue was later addressed after the Kandy Royals management apologized to Shaheen Afridi. Following the apology and discussions with the team officials, the fast bowler returned to action and participated in subsequent matches for the franchise. Despite the disagreement, Shaheen Afridi continued to contribute to his team’s campaign in the tournament. He played six matches in the Lanka Premier League and took seven wickets, demonstrating his effectiveness as one of the leading fast bowlers in the competition. Shaheen Afridi is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most important international cricketers and has established himself as a key figure in the national team’s bowling attack. Known for his pace, swing, and ability to take early wickets, he has represented Pakistan across all formats of international cricket and has earned recognition as one of the world’s top fast bowlers. His participation in overseas T20 leagues has provided him with valuable experience and exposure against international players. The Lanka Premier League was another opportunity for him to showcase his skills and maintain competitive form ahead of future international assignments. The Kandy Royals management’s decision to apologize after the team sheet controversy helped resolve the matter, allowing Shaheen Afridi to continue his involvement in the tournament. However, his early departure due to personal reasons means that he will no longer be available for the remaining matches of the league. The exact nature of the personal reasons behind Shaheen Afridi’s return to Pakistan has not been disclosed. His decision comes as part of his personal commitments, and there has been no official indication that his departure is related to any injury or cricketing issue. Fans and cricket analysts have closely followed Shaheen Afridi’s performances in the tournament, particularly because of his reputation as a match-winning bowler. His seven wickets in six matches highlighted his continued ability to perform at the highest level in franchise cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Board and supporters will now be hoping that Shaheen Afridi returns refreshed and prepared for upcoming international challenges. His fitness, form, and availability remain important factors for Pakistan’s future cricketing plans.

Fernandez defends Argentina after World Cup Final controversies

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has defended his team’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, saying the players represented their country “in the best possible way” despite a series of controversial incidents that overshadowed their run to the final. The Chelsea star shared an emotional message on social media after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, insisting the team had given everything for the national jersey throughout the tournament. Fernandez’s own campaign ended on a disappointing note after he was sent off late in normal time for a second yellow card following a challenge on Spanish defender Pau Cubarsi. Reduced to 10 men, Argentina struggled to contain Spain before Ferran Torres scored the decisive winner in the 106th minute to hand La Roja the world title. The final was also marred by post-match controversy. Reports alleged that midfielder Leandro Paredes attempted to confront members of the Spanish squad during their celebrations, prompting FIFA to open an investigation into possible disciplinary breaches. Argentina’s players also drew criticism after turning their backs while Spain collected their medals and lifted the World Cup trophy. Earlier in the tournament, the team sparked political controversy by displaying a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” following their semi-final victory over England. The slogan refers to Argentina’s long-standing claim over the Falkland Islands, a dispute that remains highly sensitive between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Despite the criticism, Fernandez chose to focus on the team’s commitment and unity rather than the controversies. “As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result,” he wrote. “For years, this group has represented Argentina in the best possible way. Competing is not only about winning, but about giving everything for the shirt and never giving up.” The 25-year-old also thanked Argentina’s supporters for standing by the team throughout the tournament, describing wearing the national jersey as the greatest honour of his career. Fernandez, who lifted the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in Qatar in 2022, admitted that missing out on a second consecutive title was painful but vowed to continue giving his all whenever he represents his country. Although Argentina fell short in the final, Fernandez’s message sought to shift the focus from controversy to the dedication and determination shown by the squad throughout their journey to another World Cup final.

Four bodies recovered after Broad Peak avalanche

The bodies of four climbers have been recovered after a deadly avalanche struck Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, located in Pakistan. Rescue teams are continuing an extensive search for the remaining missing climbers in difficult weather and terrain. The avalanche hit the mountain during the climbing season, leaving around 10 mountaineers missing. The victims include climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, China and the United States, highlighting the international nature of the expedition. Search and rescue teams remain on the mountain despite harsh conditions. The operation is being carried out in a challenging high-altitude environment, where steep slopes, freezing temperatures and unstable snow have made rescue efforts extremely difficult. Tourism Minister Nikk Nam Karim said every possible effort is being made to locate the missing climbers. He said rescue teams are working continuously to search the affected area and provide assistance to those involved in the incident. The minister added that the Tourism Department is supporting the rescue mission by providing logistical assistance. Authorities are coordinating with rescue teams and other relevant agencies to ensure the search operation continues without interruption. Broad Peak, which rises to more than 8,000 metres in the Karakoram mountain range, is one of Pakistan’s most challenging peaks and attracts climbers from around the world every year. However, the mountain is also known for its unpredictable weather and avalanche risks, particularly during the peak climbing season. Officials have not yet released the identities of the recovered climbers.
