Babar Azam, Abbas rise in ICC Test rankings after West Indies defeat

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and experienced pacer Mohammad Abbas have moved up in the latest ICC Test rankings.

The rankings were updated after the first Test between Pakistan and the West Indies.

Pakistan lost the match by 90 runs at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. The defeat gave the West Indies a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Despite the loss, several Pakistani players made progress in the individual rankings.

Mohammad Abbas was Pakistan’s biggest mover among the bowlers. The veteran fast bowler delivered an impressive performance in the Test.

Abbas took three wickets in the first innings. He then produced an outstanding spell in the second innings.

The right-arm pacer claimed five wickets for 22 runs. He finished the match with eight wickets in total.

His performance helped him climb nine places in the ICC Test bowling rankings. Abbas is now ranked 17th among Test bowlers.

Left-arm spinner Noman Ali remains Pakistan’s highest-ranked Test bowler. He retained seventh position in the latest rankings.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, however, dropped four places. He is now ranked 29th.

Off-spinner Sajid Khan also slipped one position. He moved down to 35th in the bowling rankings.

Babar Azam also made progress in the Test batting rankings.

The Pakistan captain played an important role during the team’s chase in the second innings. Pakistan needed 211 runs for victory.

Babar remained unbeaten on 58 as Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals. His fighting innings was one of the few positive moments for the visitors.

The performance lifted Babar four places in the rankings. He is now ranked 15th among Test batters.

Former Pakistan captain Shan Masood also moved up after scoring a century in the first innings.

Masood’s hundred helped him gain eight places. He is now ranked 36th in the ICC Test batting rankings.

However, some Pakistani batters suffered a decline.

Saud Shakeel dropped three places to 24th. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan also fell eight places and is now ranked 26th.

Salman Ali Agha dropped four positions. He now occupies 32nd place in the latest Test batting standings.

The rankings provide some individual encouragement for Pakistan despite their disappointing result in Trinidad.

The national team will now look to bounce back in the second and final Test against the West Indies.

Aurangzeb said the political choices made in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad reflected the direction of the election campaign. She suggested that the response from voters in both areas had strengthened the PML-N’s position. She further said August 2 would be an important day for the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to her, voters would use the lion symbol to formally announce their decision through the ballot. Aurangzeb urged Kashmiris to vote for the PML-N and support its leadership. She presented the party as a force for development and progress in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The statement comes amid the ongoing electoral activity in the region. Political parties are campaigning to win the support of voters ahead of the final voting process. Aurangzeb’s remarks underline the PML-N’s focus on development as a central theme of its campaign.     Pakistan pushes for US-Iran dialogue under Islamab…

    Pakistan is continuing diplomatic efforts to bring the United States and Iran back to the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a bid to ease regional tensions and promote dialogue, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Thursday. Speaking at the weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said Pakistan remains actively engaged with all relevant parties to encourage the implementation of the Islamabad MoU and the Pakistan-Qatar joint understanding aimed at reducing tensions. He said negotiations are continuing to restore stability, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, and to support efforts for de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy. The spokesperson noted that although the region had witnessed a brief period of relative calm, the security situation remains fragile. He said Pakistan hopes the reduction in hostilities will pave the way for a lasting ceasefire and meaningful negotiations. Reaffirming Islamabad’s position, Andrabi said dialogue and diplomacy remain the only practical solution to the ongoing crisis. He added that Pakistan welcomes every initiative aimed at resuming talks between Iran and the United States and will continue to play a constructive role in regional peace efforts. He urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint and honour their commitments to resume technical-level discussions under the Islamabad MoU. Highlighting Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagements, Andrabi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to continue close coordination for regional peace, stability and the uninterrupted movement of lawful maritime trade through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. He said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also held separate telephone conversations with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The discussions focused on the evolving regional situation, diplomatic cooperation and efforts to maintain peace and stability. The spokesperson said Pakistan and Kuwait also reaffirmed their longstanding partnership and agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, information technology, agriculture, education and healthcare. He added that Kuwait’s ratification of the Pakistan-Kuwait Defence Cooperation Agreement would further strengthen defence collaboration between the two countries. Andrabi also highlighted Pakistan’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, where Islamabad reaffirmed its commitment to regional connectivity, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative while expressing readiness to assume the SCO chairmanship for 2026-27. On Pakistan-US relations, he said Ishaq Dar recently met a visiting US congressional delegation and an American business delegation, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation through stronger parliamentary, economic and people-to-people engagement. Addressing the situation in Palestine, Andrabi said Pakistan joined several Arab and Islamic countries in condemning Israeli actions in Jerusalem and called on the international community to uphold international law, protect Palestinian rights and preserve the historical and religious status of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

    Mohammad Abbas breaks Pakistan’s Test bowling record

    TAROUBA: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has created a new national record in Test cricket. Abbas has surpassed legendary former captain Imran Khan to achieve Pakistan’s best bowling average among pacers with at least 100 Test wickets. The 36-year-old reached the milestone during Pakistan’s first Test against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. Abbas dismissed Brandon King and Kavem Hodge during the West Indies’ second innings. He had already taken three wickets in the first innings. The performance took Abbas to 115 Test wickets in 30 matches. His bowling average improved to 22.78. Imran Khan previously held the record with an average of 22.81. He took 362 wickets in 88 Tests during his career. Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis is third on the list. He claimed 373 wickets in 87 Tests at an average of 23.56. Abbas made his Test debut against the West Indies in Kingston in 2017. He received his Test cap from then Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq. Despite his strong domestic record, Abbas spent more than three years away from Pakistan’s Test team. He returned to the side during the tour of South Africa in December 2025. Since his comeback, he has once again become an important part of Pakistan’s pace attack. In 2026, Abbas has taken 15 wickets in three Tests. His performances also include a five-wicket haul.
