Bank of Punjab Board approves Up to Rs30bn equity injection by Punjab government

LAHORE: The Board of Directors of The Bank of Punjab (BOP) has approved a proposal for an equity injection of up to Rs30 billion by the Government of Punjab, a move aimed at strengthening the bank’s capital position and supporting its next phase of expansion.

The decision was taken at a board meeting held on August 7, 2026. Under the proposal, the Punjab government will subscribe to ordinary shares to be issued by the bank through a mechanism other than a rights issue.

The proposed transaction will not take effect immediately and remains conditional on obtaining all required statutory, corporate, shareholder and regulatory approvals.

According to the bank, the planned capital injection is an important step in its broader transformation strategy and will provide additional financial capacity to support sustainable growth across its key business segments.

Share issuance price

The ordinary shares will initially be issued at Rs38.20 per share. However, if the market price of BOP shares is higher than this amount at the time of issuance, the shares will be issued at the prevailing market price plus a premium of 5 percent.

As a result, Rs38.20 will serve as the minimum or floor price for the proposed share issuance.

The transaction is expected to reinforce the bank’s capital base and provide greater flexibility to manage balance-sheet expansion while maintaining prudent financial and risk-management standards.

BOP expands its market presence

The Bank of Punjab has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the institution expanding its balance sheet, improving financial performance and strengthening its position across several sectors of Pakistan’s economy.

The bank has developed a strong presence in areas including small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financing, agricultural lending, affordable housing, digital banking and credit cards. It has also increased its focus on women’s participation and leadership in banking and financial services.

BOP is further expanding its activities in commercial and corporate banking, particularly in areas linked to export-oriented businesses.

The bank said these business segments have positioned it as an important participant in supporting economic activity, employment creation and financial inclusion across the country.

Capital requirements rise with expansion

Despite the bank’s growth, the rapid expansion of its operations has increased pressure on its existing capital base.

BOP said its capital position has historically remained relatively limited compared with the size of its operations and the growth opportunities available to the institution.

The proposed Rs30 billion injection is therefore expected to provide the bank with additional capacity to expand its core businesses while maintaining financial resilience.

The additional capital could also enable BOP to increase its low-cost deposit base and grow lending operations without facing the same level of capital constraints.

The bank said strengthening its capital position would allow it to pursue growth while maintaining a balanced and prudent approach to balance-sheet management.

Strong financial performance

The proposed capital injection comes as BOP continues to report strong underlying financial performance.

During 2025, the bank recorded revenue growth of around 29 percent, while its earnings increased by more than 40 percent year on year. The bank also witnessed significant appreciation in the value of its shares during the period.

According to the bank, the proposed capital raise should therefore be viewed primarily as growth capital rather than a measure aimed at addressing immediate financial weakness.

The additional equity is expected to provide the financial foundation required for BOP to continue expanding its operations and investing in new business opportunities.

International expansion in focus

Another important component of the bank’s future strategy is its international expansion.

The capital injection is expected to support the next phase of BOP’s growth, including an international venture that has recently received approval from the State Bank of Pakistan.

The move could provide the bank with an opportunity to broaden its geographical footprint and develop new sources of business and revenue.

With the proposed equity injection, BOP aims to strengthen its financial position, support expansion in priority sectors and improve its ability to serve businesses, consumers and other customers as demand for banking and financial services continues to grow.

That same city saw some of the earthquake’s most extensive destruction, with entire residential blocks reduced to piles of concrete and twisted metal. Video circulating online captured buildings shaking violently as residents fled into the streets, while separate footage showed a regional airport swaying dramatically during the quake as large sections of ceiling came down around people sheltering inside. Among the most widely shared images online is footage showing the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary shaking and partially collapsing. The cathedral, built in the 1920s, holds the distinction of being Colombia’s tallest cathedral and ranks among the highest neo Gothic churches anywhere in the Americas. The disaster struck just days after Abelardo De La Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s president, immediately confronting his new administration with a major crisis. The earthquake also comes with memories still fresh of a pair of devastating earthquakes that struck neighboring Venezuela in June. Colombia’s national government has declared a state of emergency and mobilized the military, police and specialized rescue units to lead recovery operations, while accepting offers of international assistance as the search for survivors continues.     ISLAMABAD: The extension of the tenure of Professor Dr Nusrat Shah, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), Larkana, has reportedly prompted vice chancellors of several public-sector universities across Sindh to seek extensions as their first terms approach completion. According to sources, the first four-year terms of vice chancellors at eight government universities are set to expire over the coming months. Almost all of the serving VCs, except one, are reportedly seeking second terms. Nusrat Shah’s extension case reaches CM House Sources in the Sindh Chief Minister’s House said that a summary seeking an extension for Dr Nusrat Shah has been forwarded to the Chief Minister of Sindh. Dr Nusrat Shah’s current four-year term is scheduled to expire on January 1, 2027. She is the daughter of former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. Sources said her extension case has gained considerable attention and may receive approval. The development has reportedly encouraged other vice chancellors whose terms are also nearing completion to pursue extensions. One extension approved so far The Sindh government has so far approved an extension only for Dr Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University. Sources said extension cases of Dr Khalid Iraqi and Dr Farooq Hassan have been rejected. Other VCs seeking second terms   Several other vice chancellors are also approaching the end of their first terms: Dr Ikramuddin Ujan — Vice Chancellor, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro. His term expires on January 1, 2027. His extension case is reportedly complicated by allegations concerning the awarding of multiple gold medals to his son at the university. Dr Zahid Hussain Khand — Vice Chancellor, Aror University of Art, Architecture, Design and Heritage, Sukkur. His term expires on January 19, 2027. Arbela Bhutto — Vice Chancellor, Shaheed Allah Buksh Soomro University of Art, Design and Heritages. Her term expires on January 19, 2027. Dr Asif Sheikh — Vice Chancellor, IBA Sukkur. His term expires on January 19, 2027. Dr Taha Hussain — Vice Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. His term is due to expire in mid-March 2027. Tahmina Nangraj — Vice Chancellor, Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University, Sukkur. Her term expires on January 19, 2027.  Dr Samreen Hussain — Vice Chancellor, Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. Her term expires in January 2027.     Supreme Court orders early hearing of Imran’s me…

    ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday accepted a chamber appeal filed by former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The court directed that his petition be fixed for hearing before a Supreme Court bench at the earliest. Imran Khan has requested the court to order his transfer from Adiala Jail to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment. He has also sought permission for regular meetings with his family members, personal physicians and legal counsel. In addition, he wants his medical reports to be shared with his family. The appeal challenged an earlier decision by the Supreme Court Registrar, who had returned the petitions after raising objections. The Registrar’s Office said the petitions were incomplete because they did not include a signed power of attorney. During Friday’s proceedings, Advocate Uzair Karamat Bhandari appeared before Chief Justice Yahya Afridi in chambers on behalf of Imran Khan. After hearing the arguments, the chief justice declared the Registrar’s objections ineffective and directed the legal team to submit a signed power of attorney. The Registrar’s Office was also instructed to assign a regular case number to the petition so it could be listed for hearing without unnecessary delay. The Supreme Court further ordered that a separate petition filed by Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, should be heard together with his own case. In the appeal, Imran Khan argued that the Registrar had exceeded his administrative powers by deciding the maintainability of the petition. His legal team maintained that such questions should be decided by judges because they involve constitutional and legal interpretation rather than administrative scrutiny. The petition also requested that Imran Khan be examined by doctors of his own choice. The names included Dr Khurram Mirza, Dr Asim Yusuf, Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Samina Niazi. It further asked the court to order his immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital for a detailed medical examination and treatment. The petition also sought uninterrupted access to his personal doctors, family members and lawyers during his imprisonment and treatment. Dr Uzma Khan has also challenged an Islamabad High Court ruling that refused to order Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital. She also questioned the decision denying his family access to his medical information and visits by his personal physicians. In her petition, Dr Uzma said Imran Khan and his wife are currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, while his two sons live abroad. She said she is his closest immediate family member in Pakistan and, as a medical doctor, is deeply concerned about his health. She argued that she has the legal standing to pursue the case on his behalf. Imran Khan has remained in custody since August 2023. He is serving a 14-year prison sentence in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. He is also receiving treatment for right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), an eye condition that was diagnosed earlier this year. His medical treatment has become a major political issue in recent months. Opposition leaders have repeatedly accused the government of failing to ensure proper medical care and denying him access to his personal doctors.     AJK polls begin with 19,000 security personnel

    The first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections is being held today across the Mirpur division, with authorities completing extensive arrangements for polling and security. The first phase covers Mirpur, Bhimber and Kotli districts. Officials said all polling material has been delivered to the designated polling stations ahead of voting. AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan and Election Commission Secretary Raja Muhammad Shakeel said the authorities were committed to ensuring free, fair and transparent elections. They urged voters to exercise their democratic right peacefully. They also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt polling or create a law and order situation. Officials advised voters and political workers to avoid spreading or believing unverified information circulating on social media. They said all stakeholders must follow the election code of conduct. The AJK elections are being conducted in three phases. Polling in the Mirpur division is taking place today. The second phase will be held in Muzaffarabad on August 2, followed by the third phase in Poonch on August 10. Security has been significantly increased across the three districts. Mirpur police authorities said a detailed security plan has been prepared to protect voters, election staff and polling stations. Mirpur SSP Khurram Iqbal said security forces have adopted a three-layer strategy. Polling stations have been divided into highly sensitive, sensitive and normal categories. Security personnel and resources have been assigned according to the level of risk. The district has also been divided into 56 security sectors. Each sector is being supervised by a deputy superintendent of police. Monitoring and rapid-response teams will remain active throughout the voting process. Authorities have also prepared additional contingency arrangements to deal with emergencies. A second response force will be available if required, while a third security layer will operate under zonal commanders. More than 1.4 million registered voters are expected to participate in the first phase across 13 constituencies. Authorities have established 2,454 polling stations containing 3,701 polling booths. Around 3,500 election officials have been assigned duties for the polling process. Voting will take place from 8am to 5pm. The 13 constituencies include four in Mirpur district, three in Bhimber and six in Kotli. Of the total polling stations, 1,965 have been classified as sensitive or highly sensitive. More than 19,000 security personnel have been deployed across the division. The force includes around 17,000 police officers, while approximately 2,100 army personnel will remain available as a backup force. A total of 288 candidates are contesting the 13 seats. The main political competition is expected to involve the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Pakistan Peoples Party and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, along with several influential independent candidates. Authorities have appealed to voters, candidates and political workers to cooperate with security personnel and maintain peace throughout polling.
