Information minister says rigging claims need real evidence

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said the countdown for the federal government has begun. He made the statement after his party won fewer seats than expected in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections. The PPP has called the polls rigged.

The PML-N government at the centre relies on support from several parties. The PPP remains its main ally. But during the AJK elections, the PPP repeatedly claimed the polls were unfair.

The PML-N has won a simple majority to form the government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The party secured 23 out of 45 seats. This was confirmed by Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the prime minister on political affairs.

Bilawal addressed PML-N directly in a video message. He asked if they could hear a sound. He said it was the countdown for the federal government beginning.

He also announced a public gathering in Bagh district. He called on supporters in Poonch to prepare for a rally on August 10. He told them to get ready for his arrival.

Bilawal described the elections as neither free nor fair. He called them rigged, and used strong words like bullet elections and bloody elections.

Despite the results, he praised his party workers. He said the PPP had won nine seats despite the difficult circumstances. He vowed to reclaim seats he said had been stolen in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad. He said the PPP would continue its struggle and would not lose courage or leave the field.

Sindh minister and senior PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon issued a similar warning shortly before Bilawal spoke. Memon said the countdown for the federal government had begun. He claimed PML-N had given ballot papers to its candidates two days before voting, working together with the Election Commission.

Memon also alleged that the administration was ignoring complaints from the current president and prime minister of AJK. He called it historic rigging. He questioned whether top PML-N leaders, including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, had genuinely won their own seats in the 2024 elections.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar responded on Monday. He said accusations of rigging should not be made without solid evidence. He urged the PPP to show political maturity and accept the election results.

His comments came a day after the second phase of voting was held in Muzaffarabad Division and refugee seats. Unofficial results showed PML-N leading in five constituencies, while PPP had won two. In the first phase, PML-N had already secured nine of the thirteen seats in Mirpur Division, with PPP winning four.

Tarar said PPP should have worked harder, as it did during the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. He questioned the evidence behind Memon’s claims and said accusations should not be made without proof.

He said the people of AJK voted for the party that focused on development. He advised PPP to reflect on its own performance in Sindh instead of blaming others.

Tarar praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for congratulating PPP after its win in Gilgit-Baltistan. He called it an example of political tolerance. He said PML-N ran a united and strong campaign in AJK, led by Nawaz Sharif, which helped secure the party’s victory.

Aurangzeb revealed that authorities have uncovered major sales tax evasion cases, resulting in higher tax collections and increased revenue for the national exchequer. He stressed that modern digital tools, integrated databases and artificial intelligence will play a central role in strengthening tax administration and bringing the FBR in line with international standards. Calling on tax officials to continuously upgrade their skills, the finance minister said restoring taxpayers’ confidence and protecting national resources remain among the institution’s highest priorities. He expressed confidence that ongoing reforms would improve the business environment and ensure the benefits of economic reforms reach ordinary citizens. FBR Chairman Muhammad Rashid Langrial also addressed the ceremony, highlighting the importance of professional training and capacity building for tax officers. He said the organisation is focused on developing a modern, transparent and efficient tax system capable of meeting Pakistan’s evolving economic needs.

    Iran, Oman reach deal on Strait of Hormuz shipping routes

    Iran and Oman have reached an agreement on a proposed shipping route map for the strategically important Strait of Hormuz following weeks of technical negotiations, Iranian officials said on Saturday. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the two countries had made significant progress in talks aimed at establishing safer navigation routes through the waterway. The negotiations began around three months ago under an agreement signed in June. Baghaei said the proposed route was developed through coordination between Iran’s foreign ministry and its defence, security and environmental authorities. He added that Tehran and Muscat were still discussing some remaining issues, including the wording of a joint statement. The spokesman stressed that the arrangement was a bilateral agreement between Iran and Oman and was intended to facilitate the safe movement of commercial vessels while respecting the sovereignty of both countries. However, Tehran has made clear that the full restoration of normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz depends on broader developments involving the United States. Baghaei said Iran wanted an end to what it described as US military threats, naval restrictions and violations of previous commitments before normal commercial traffic could fully resume. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately said negotiations with Oman over the waterway were continuing. He described the discussions as separate from the wider diplomatic dispute between Tehran and Washington. Araghchi also rejected the description of an earlier agreement as a simple 60-day ceasefire. He said the understanding was aimed at ending the war, while the 60-day period was intended for negotiations toward a final settlement. He said Qatar and Pakistan were continuing to exchange messages with Iran but stressed that Tehran had not yet decided to resume direct negotiations with Washington. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi also rejected claims that the United States could take control of the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran remained in charge of decisions concerning the waterway and dismissed statements suggesting that the strait could become US territory. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. A prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway has raised concerns over global energy supplies and fuel prices. The latest developments come amid continuing tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel. Shipping through the strait remains significantly below normal levels, while diplomatic efforts to end the wider conflict have yet to produce a lasting settlement. US President Donald Trump has meanwhile urged Americans to accept higher fuel prices while the conflict continues, arguing that confronting Iran was necessary to prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The dispute has already pushed global oil prices higher, while rising fuel costs in the United States have added to inflationary pressures.

  • CM orders full-scale flood relief operations across Punjab

    LAHORE – On the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, relief operations are continuing in all flood-affected areas of the province, with the district administration and all relevant departments remaining fully mobilised. Officials from the district administration, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Rescue 1122, Suthra Punjab, Health Clinic on Wheels, Field Hospitals, Livestock, Agriculture and other concerned departments are actively engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts. Under the Chief Minister’s directives, flood victims in Muridke, Sheikhupura, Hakimpura, Ferozewala, Pathan Colony and other affected areas are being shifted promptly to safer locations and relief camps. Rescue 1122 teams are conducting rescue operations using boats, ensuring the safe evacuation of residents along with their essential belongings. The Chief Minister has also directed authorities to ensure the uninterrupted supply of medicines, food and other essential items for flood victims. Hygienically prepared meals are being provided three times a day breakfast, lunch and dinner to all affected families. On the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Chairman CMIT Shoaib Mirza visited the flood-hit areas to review the provision of meals to the affected people. Flood victims expressed satisfaction over receiving three meals a day delivered directly to their doorsteps. In addition to cooked meals, dry milk and biscuits are also being distributed among the affected families as part of the ongoing relief efforts.

  • Punjab prison reforms reviewed at CM task force meeting

    Lahore – An important meeting of the Chief Minister Punjab Task Force for Prisons was held at the Home Department. Task Force Chairman Rana Manan Khan chaired the meeting. IG Prisons Mian Salik Jalal, Additional Secretary Prisons Roman Burana, DIG Prisons Shaukat Feroz, Chief Psychologist Prisons Sadia Zafar and other relevant officials attended the meeting. The meeting received a detailed briefing on the Chief Minister Punjab’s Prison Reforms Agenda. It was informed that under the Chief Minister Punjab Prison Health Programme, every inmate undergoes medical tests as well as a psychological assessment upon admission to prison. The briefing revealed that 96,110 inmates have undergone health screening so far while psychological assessments and screenings of 107,851 inmates were completed from January to June. The meeting was informed that the Chief Minister Punjab Literacy Programme has been launched to provide education to inmates in prisons across Punjab. So far, 11,968 inmates have received education under the programme. For the convenience and welfare of inmates, Chief Minister Punjab Prison Welfare Stores have also been established in all prisons. Inmates have visited these stores 161,489 times with purchases worth Rs. 306 million made so far. The meeting also reviewed progress on the construction of new women’s prisons in Lahore, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi as well as a plan to increase inmate capacity through the construction of new prisons and additional barracks across Punjab. Task Force Chairman Rana Manan Khan said that efforts are continuing to reform inmates by providing them with a better prison environment and opportunities for training. He said citizens can book prison visits online from home to meet inmates in prisons across Punjab. So far, more than 60,000 citizens have visited inmates through the “Mulaqat App.” He added that a modern system has been introduced for the sale of products manufactured by inmates in prison industries enabling their hard work to be converted into economic support. The Task Force Chairman further said that after Faisalabad, Mianwali and Dera Ghazi Khan, Central Jail Lahore is also being shifted to solar power. He directed that the installation of modern cameras and other equipment in prisons across Punjab under the Safe Jail Project should be completed at the earliest.
