Cambodia Continues Border Assaults, Prompting Expanded Thai Curfews and Retaliation

BANGKOK – Cambodian forces have continued attacks along the Thai border, leading Thailand to expand retaliatory operations and impose wider curfews in affected provinces, the Thai Ministry of Defence announced on Sunday. The escalation comes despite reports of a proposed ceasefire brokered by regional leadership.

Defence Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri stated that Cambodia launched a series of assaults from Saturday night into Sunday morning, including drone incursions into Trat province and rocket attacks in Si Sa Ket. “Cambodia has not ceased fire as it claimed,” RAdm Surasant said, referencing a reported proposal by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for both sides to cease hostilities by 10 p.m. on Saturday. He affirmed that Thailand’s responses adhered to internationally recognized rules of engagement.

In response to the ongoing threat, the Royal Thai Navy has expanded a curfew from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. to four districts in Trat province: Khlong Yai, Bo Rai, Khao Saming, and Muang. This follows an earlier curfew imposed in four districts of Sa Kaeo province.

Cambodia continued its attacks on bordering areas of Thailand which must retaliate and expand curfews in border provinces, according to the Thai Ministry of Defence.

Deputy army spokesman Colonel Richa Suksuvanont reported that Thai forces maintain full control of key strategic areas along the border, including Hill 677 in Ubon Ratchathani and the recently secured Prasat Khana temple ruins in Surin. At the temple, Thai troops discovered trenches dug by Cambodian forces, which Col Richa described as a serious breach of international principles.

Col Richa also provided a detailed account of claimed Cambodian military losses since the conflict intensified, estimating at least 221 soldiers killed and the destruction of 51 bases, 10 tanks, various artillery systems, and 68 drones. He stated the army’s objective is to reclaim encroached areas and disable Cambodian military capabilities that threaten Thai forces and civilians.

Separately, Royal Thai Navy assistant spokesman Captain Nara Khunthothom confirmed that naval forces, supported by fighter jets, had retaken the Ban Chamrak area in Trat from Cambodian occupation, with clashes continuing as Cambodian troops resisted. The expanded curfew, he said, is a necessary measure to protect Thai communities from persistent attacks.
