US confirms Israel-Lebanon talks in Rome

The United States has confirmed that Israel and Lebanon will hold their next round of talks in Rome from August 4 to 6. The negotiations will focus on implementing a framework agreement aimed at ending the conflict and improving security along the Israel-Lebanon border. The talks will be mediated by the United States. Technical teams from both sides are expected to discuss several key issues. One major issue will be the expansion of pilot zones in southern Lebanon. Israel is preparing to withdraw from two of these areas as part of the framework agreement. The discussions will also cover unresolved border disputes. The sides are expected to explore steps towards a wider peace and security arrangement. The framework emerged after fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalated on March 2. The conflict took place amid wider tensions across the Middle East. Under the agreement, Hezbollah is expected to disarm. Lebanese forces are also to increase their deployment in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces are expected to withdraw gradually from parts of southern Lebanon. The process will initially involve two designated pilot zones. US officials said the experience from the initial zones could help establish a broader system for withdrawal and security arrangements. The United States believes the pilot zones can be expanded in stages if the initial process proves successful. The Lebanese army, however, has raised concerns over continued Israeli military activity in the south. Beirut has accused Israel of carrying out intermittent strikes and artillery attacks despite the reduction in fighting. Lebanese officials say the continued military activity is making it harder for the army to fully deploy in the south under the framework agreement.

Johnson & Johnson agrees $5.5bn talc cancer settlement

NEW YORK: Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay an estimated $5.5 billion to settle tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging that its talc-based baby powder and other products caused ovarian cancer. The proposed settlement covers around 76,000 claims. The cases include lawsuits pending in federal and state courts across the United States. The agreement could bring an end to a legal battle that has continued for about a decade. However, it will only become final if 95 per cent of eligible ovarian cancer claimants accept the deal. Lawyers representing the plaintiffs welcomed the settlement. They described it as a reasonable outcome after years of legal proceedings. Johnson & Johnson has continued to deny that its talc products caused cancer. The company has also rejected claims that its products contained asbestos. The company said it agreed to the settlement to bring the long-running dispute to an end. Its litigation chief maintained that the claims lacked merit. Under the proposed agreement, Johnson & Johnson expects to pay about $3 billion in 2027. Additional payments will follow in 2028. The final cost could be higher. Lawyers involved in the negotiations said the total amount could eventually reach $7 billion or more, depending on the number of claimants who participate. The settlement does not place a fixed ceiling on the company’s total payments. Individual qualifying claims will receive amounts based on specific criteria. The agreement follows several important courtroom victories for Johnson & Johnson. The company has won a number of individual trials. It has also successfully challenged some of the experts used by plaintiffs to support their claims. A federal judge recently raised questions about whether individual plaintiffs could establish that talc specifically caused their ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has maintained for years that its talc products were safe. The company stopped selling talc-based baby powder in the United States in 2020. It replaced the product with a cornstarch-based version. The legal dispute also involved a controversial bankruptcy strategy. In 2021, Johnson & Johnson moved talc liabilities to a subsidiary that sought bankruptcy protection. The strategy, commonly known as the “Texas two-step”, was intended to resolve the lawsuits through bankruptcy proceedings. The attempts ultimately failed after courts dismissed the bankruptcy cases. Before those efforts, Johnson & Johnson had experienced mixed results in talc trials. In one major case, a jury awarded billions of dollars to 22 women who alleged that the company’s baby powder contributed to their ovarian cancer. Other cases ended in victories for the company, while some awards were later reduced on appeal. The new settlement differs from the earlier bankruptcy proposals. It applies only to existing claims. It does not cover potential future lawsuits. The agreement is also expected to provide faster payments to eligible claimants. Lawyers involved in the deal said payments could be completed within about 18 months. The settlement now faces an important approval test. At least 95 per cent of ovarian cancer claimants must agree to the deal before it can become final. If approved, the agreement would significantly reduce one of Johnson & Johnson’s longest-running legal challenges and provide compensation to thousands of people involved in the litigation.

Mohammad Abbas breaks Pakistan’s Test bowling record

TAROUBA: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has created a new national record in Test cricket. Abbas has surpassed legendary former captain Imran Khan to achieve Pakistan’s best bowling average among pacers with at least 100 Test wickets. The 36-year-old reached the milestone during Pakistan’s first Test against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. Abbas dismissed Brandon King and Kavem Hodge during the West Indies’ second innings. He had already taken three wickets in the first innings. The performance took Abbas to 115 Test wickets in 30 matches. His bowling average improved to 22.78. Imran Khan previously held the record with an average of 22.81. He took 362 wickets in 88 Tests during his career. Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis is third on the list. He claimed 373 wickets in 87 Tests at an average of 23.56. Abbas made his Test debut against the West Indies in Kingston in 2017. He received his Test cap from then Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq. Despite his strong domestic record, Abbas spent more than three years away from Pakistan’s Test team. He returned to the side during the tour of South Africa in December 2025. Since his comeback, he has once again become an important part of Pakistan’s pace attack. In 2026, Abbas has taken 15 wickets in three Tests. His performances also include a five-wicket haul. Abbas has also built an impressive record in first-class cricket. He has taken 894 wickets in 220 matches at an average of 20.36. Among active first-class bowlers, Abbas ranks fourth for wickets. James Anderson leads the list with 1,181 wickets, followed by Simon Harmer with 1,054 and Malinda Pushpakumara with 1,010. Abbas’ latest achievement adds another milestone to his career. His accuracy and consistency have helped him become one of Pakistan’s most effective Test bowlers.

US Consulate in Toronto targeted in second shooting

TORONTO: Canadian police have launched an investigation after gunfire was reported outside the US Consulate in downtown Toronto. The incident marks the second shooting near the diplomatic facility this year. Authorities are investigating the motive and examining security measures around the building. Police were alerted after hearing a gunshot near the consulate on University Avenue. Officers later found evidence that a firearm had been discharged. Investigators recovered a single shell casing from the area. The exterior of the consulate also suffered minor damage. No injuries were reported in the incident. Police said a white Honda sedan without a licence plate was seen leaving the area at high speed. Officers briefly pursued the vehicle but ended the chase because of safety concerns. The consulate was previously targeted in a shooting on March 10. Several arrests were later made in connection with that incident. Toronto police have also been investigating claims that criminal networks were recruiting young people to carry out shootings at prominent locations across the city. Officials have previously mentioned the US Consulate and Jewish institutions among the reported targets. Police have not yet established whether the latest shooting is linked to the earlier incident. Authorities said it was too early to determine a definite motive. Security around the consulate has remained under close watch following previous incidents. Police said in June that young people in the Toronto area were allegedly being offered money to carry out shootings at different locations. The reported targets included synagogues, Jewish schools and the US Consulate. Three people were arrested in connection with the March shooting. A police officer was killed during the operation linked to those arrests. The US State Department said it was cooperating with Canadian authorities following the latest incident. A department spokesperson thanked Canadian law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts to protect the consulate. The US Embassy and consulates across Canada remain open. However, some routine consular services in Toronto have been rescheduled. Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the latest incident. He also criticised recent shootings and acts of vandalism reported in Toronto. Ford said police investigations were underway and called for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.

Carly Simon opens up about her quiet fight with Parkinson’s and a health scare

Carly Simon, the celebrated singer-songwriter behind decades of hit records, has revealed she has been quietly living with Parkinson’s disease. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member shared that she has spent recent years recovering away from public attention, only now choosing to speak about what she has been going through. Though she was diagnosed years ago, Simon explained that coming to terms with the condition took an emotional toll. In her account, she described how severe arthritis was actually the first warning sign that something was wrong, well before doctors identified Parkinson’s as the underlying cause. She recalled reaching a point where walking became nearly impossible without significant assistance. That was when she and her family realized something more serious was happening. After undergoing thorough testing at the Mayo Clinic, she finally received her Parkinson’s diagnosis. Simon acknowledged that many fans and well-wishers had reached out over the years, curious about her extended absence from the spotlight and wondering how she had been doing. She explained that the truth was simple, she had been quietly learning how to navigate life with the disease. According to her, understanding the diagnosis and figuring out how much to share publicly took considerable time. She noted that Parkinson’s affects everyone differently and can be highly unpredictable. Some days leave her too exhausted to function normally, she said, while other days allow her more freedom to think, work, and feel like herself again. Beyond the Parkinson’s diagnosis, the 83-year-old singer faced another health scare. She underwent surgery to remove cancer from her face, an experience that affected her confidence about being seen publicly. Despite these challenges, Simon expressed gratitude for the support she’s received. She also shared some exciting news amid the health updates, revealing that she has been working on a new album titled “Comes in Waves.” Simon’s openness about her health struggles offers a rare, personal look into what she has faced privately over the years, even as she continued creating music behind the scenes. Her willingness to speak candidly about both the physical and emotional dimensions of living with a chronic illness, alongside a separate cancer diagnosis, reflects a level of vulnerability not always seen from artists of her stature. As she continues working on new material, fans are likely to feel reassured knowing she’s still creating, even while managing significant health challenges behind the scenes.

What Katie Holmes’ daughter really thinks of her…

Katie Holmes appears to be embracing a fresh chapter in her personal life, and according to recent reports, the person whose opinion matters most to her is fully supportive. The actress is reportedly dating New York-based artist Jason Bard Yarmosky, and sources claim that her daughter, Suri, is happy to see her mother enjoying life again after years of keeping her love life largely private.  Holmes and Yarmosky first sparked romance rumors after they were photographed together in New York before making additional public appearances in the Hamptons. Eyewitnesses described the pair as affectionate and comfortable in each other’s company, fueling speculation that the relationship is becoming more serious.  Despite the growing attention, Holmes is reportedly approaching the romance with caution. Sources close to the actress say she has learned from her past high-profile relationships and wants to let things develop naturally. Rather than rushing major milestones, she and Yarmosky are focusing on getting to know one another away from the spotlight.  Recent reports suggest that Suri has given her blessing to the relationship, encouraging her mother to embrace this new phase of life. However, other reports indicate that Holmes has not yet introduced Yarmosky to Suri, explaining that the romance is still in its early stages and that she prefers to keep family and dating separate until the relationship becomes more established. While these reports may seem contradictory, they collectively paint a picture of Holmes taking a thoughtful, measured approach to balancing motherhood and romance.  Now 20 years old, Suri is attending college and building her own future, giving Holmes more freedom to focus on herself. After dedicating years to raising her daughter following her 2012 divorce from Tom Cruise, the actress appears to be entering a new era where both mother and daughter are pursuing their own paths. Recent reports also note that Suri has legally adopted the surname “Noelle,” her mother’s middle name, reflecting another milestone in her independent life.  Yarmosky, a respected contemporary artist known for his work exploring themes of memory, aging, and family, is said to have a calming personality that Holmes appreciates. Insiders claim his grounded nature and creative outlook have helped the actress feel comfortable as she opens her heart again.  Although neither Holmes nor Yarmosky has publicly commented on the romance, fans are hopeful that this relationship brings happiness to the actress. With Suri reportedly supportive and Holmes choosing to move at her own pace, this new chapter appears to be built on trust, patience, and mutual respect.

Actor Momina Iqbal has once again become a talking point on social media, this time because of a family video that has gone viral. The actress, who has earned praise for her performances in television dramas, has also remained in the spotlight in recent months due to developments in her personal life. From legal matters to her marriage, she has attracted significant public attention throughout the year. Momina recently married Humza Malik, and the couple has often shared glimpses of their life together. Their social media posts frequently reflect a close bond with family members, with Humza appearing to enjoy a warm relationship with Momina’s relatives. The latest viral clip features Momina spending time with her husband and her sister, Rimsha Iqbal. The family members can be seen laughing, chatting, and enjoying a relaxed moment together in a casual setting. Rimsha later shared the video on social media, where it quickly caught the attention of users and spread across different platforms. While many viewers appreciated the family’s cheerful interaction, the video also sparked criticism from a section of social media users. As often happens with celebrity content, opinions were sharply divided, with some praising the family’s comfort with one another and others questioning their behavior. Several users left negative comments under reposts of the video. Some criticized the family’s mannerisms and claimed they should behave more formally in public. Others expressed disapproval of the way they were sitting and interacting during the gathering. Among the reactions, one social media user described the family in harsh terms, while another commented that people should maintain a more dignified posture even when spending time with relatives. A few others also questioned the group’s behavior, leading to a wave of online debate. At the same time, many fans defended Momina and her family, arguing that the clip simply showed loved ones enjoying each other’s company. Supporters pointed out that short videos shared online often lack context and should not be used to judge someone’s personality or family values. They also noted that celebrities frequently face intense scrutiny over ordinary moments that would otherwise go unnoticed. The incident once again highlights how quickly social media discussions can escalate, particularly when public figures are involved. Viral videos often generate both admiration and criticism, with online audiences offering a wide range of opinions based on brief clips. Momina Iqbal has not publicly responded to the criticism surrounding the video. The actress continues to remain active on social media and is focused on her professional commitments while staying connected with her fans through regular updates. Despite the mixed reactions, the viral clip has kept Momina in the spotlight, demonstrating how even casual family moments can become a subject of widespread discussion when shared online. Elizabeth Hurley reveals what she really thought o…

Elizabeth Hurley has opened up about her relationship with Miley Cyrus, revealing that she admired the singer long before she began dating Miley’s father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. The actress shared that while she had never met Miley before her romance with Billy Ray, she already felt she knew the Grammy-winning star thanks to her son, Damian Hurley.  Speaking during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Hurley explained that Damian was a huge fan of Hannah Montana and Miley’s music while growing up. As a result, she became very familiar with the pop icon’s career and personality long before their families became connected. “I always knew who she was,” Hurley said, adding that her son frequently played Miley’s music and watched her videos. She joked that she had seen the music video for “Wrecking Ball” countless times because of Damian’s enthusiasm. Looking back, Hurley admitted she had a feeling she would get along with Miley if they ever met—and that prediction turned out to be true.  The Bedazzled actress described Miley as “adorable” and said she genuinely enjoys spending time with her. Hurley’s comments offer a glimpse into the positive relationship developing within the blended family since she and Billy Ray Cyrus confirmed their romance in early 2025.  Hurley and Billy Ray first crossed paths while filming the 2022 holiday movie Christmas in Paradise. Although they remained friends for some time, their relationship eventually blossomed into romance, which they made public in April 2025. Since then, the couple has frequently spoken about how much they enjoy each other’s company and the peaceful lifestyle they share between Tennessee and the English countryside.  Miley has also publicly expressed support for both of her parents finding happiness following their separation. Reports indicate that she has welcomed Hurley warmly, helping create a positive atmosphere within the extended family. Hurley and Billy Ray even attended the London premiere of Miley’s visual album in 2025, showing their support for the singer’s career.  Hurley’s heartfelt remarks suggest that her admiration for Miley began years before her romance with Billy Ray. Rather than seeing Miley only as a global superstar, the actress remembers her through the joyful memories she shared with her son. Now that their paths have crossed personally, Hurley says her first impression was right—she always believed she would like Miley, and today, she says that feeling has only grown stronger.
