    ISLAMABAD: At least 15 newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out at the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad early Wednesday morning. According to rescue officials, the fire erupted at around 6:45am on the third floor of the hospital’s Mother and Child Health (MCH) ward. The blaze reportedly started after an air-conditioning unit exploded and spread rapidly through the nursery. PIMS authorities said 16 babies were present in the nursery when the fire broke out. Fifteen newborns died in the incident, while one baby was successfully rescued. Rescue officials said the fire was brought under control and cooling operations were initiated afterward. Six fire engines and four ambulances took part in the rescue operation after emergency teams reached the hospital soon after receiving the alert. According to the district administration, 14 babies suffered severe burns in the incident. An investigation committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner has been formed to determine the exact cause of the fire and establish how the tragedy occurred. The MCH ward was later sealed as authorities began examining the scene. Parents of the deceased babies alleged that hospital staff were not present inside the incubation centre when the fire broke out. The allegations are expected to form part of the investigation into the incident. Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal confirmed that at least 14 deaths had been reported, while other officials put the death toll at 15. He said the Director General Health and hospital secretary were present at the facility and were coordinating with the families of the victims. Speaking about the incident, Kamal said the fire started at around 6:45am following an explosion in an air-conditioning unit. He said the blaze spread extremely quickly and the hospital’s electricity supply was also disrupted immediately after the explosion. The minister said doctors and staff were present in the intensive care area at the time. According to him, some staff members went to call the rescue service, but the fire spread rapidly before the situation could be brought under control. He added that the hospital’s firefighting equipment was functioning and that PIMS was already operating beyond its normal capacity.

    Trump White House fires CIA veteran after trans identity revealed

    WASHINGTON: A longtime CIA analyst who became the first agency officer to transition while serving has spoken publicly about her dismissal from the White House after her transgender identity was exposed online. Julia Curlee, who spent about two decades with the CIA, said she was retained by the White House when Donald Trump returned to the presidency in 2025, despite his administration’s strong opposition to transgender rights. Curlee told AFP that officials initially wanted her to remain in her position. She said senior members of the new administration treated her professionally and her gender identity did not appear to affect her work. However, the situation changed after far-right influencer Laura Loomer publicly identified Curlee as transgender in a post on X and questioned why she remained in the White House National Security Council’s intelligence office. Curlee said she was dismissed shortly afterward. She recalled receiving a phone call from her new supervisor while she was spending time with her family. According to Curlee, the supervisor told her she had been fired but could not explain the reason. She described the dismissal as evidence that her transgender identity became a problem only after it turned into a public and political controversy. Curlee transitioned in 2013 while working at the CIA, becoming the first officer at the agency to do so while in service. She later joined the National Security Council during Trump’s first presidency in 2017. During her time at the NSC, Curlee provided daily intelligence briefings to then-Vice President Mike Pence. Despite Pence’s conservative views and opposition to several LGBTQ rights, Curlee said her identity never affected their professional relationship. She said her experience during Trump’s first term had led her to believe that she could continue working under a second Trump administration. After Trump’s return to office, however, Curlee said she worked under considerable uncertainty. Several NSC employees were dismissed soon after the new administration took office, but she was initially allowed to remain. She continued working at the White House for roughly 10 weeks before her dismissal. The White House defended the decision, pointing to a 3,000-word opinion article Curlee later wrote for The Atlantic, in which she criticised the president. A White House spokesperson said that someone who publicly attacked the president was not suitable for government service. Pence, meanwhile, expressed support for Curlee and said he and his wife believed people should be treated with dignity and respect. Following her dismissal, Curlee returned to the CIA but remained there for less than a year. She said returning to her former workplace became difficult for several reasons and described having to use a unisex or family bathroom as a humiliating experience.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expects to receive a response from the United States within the next few months on its request for a proposed $10 billion bilateral exchange stabilisation facility. Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad said discussions between Pakistan and the US over the proposed facility had been constructive. Pakistan formally approached US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last month for the proposed Bilateral Exchange Stabilisation Support Facility. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has clarified that the proposed $10 billion arrangement should not be viewed as a conventional loan or credit line. He said the main objective was to provide confidence regarding exchange-rate and currency stability. Such a signal, he added, could help Pakistan return to international markets to raise funds. The finance minister said the request was being considered by the US Treasury Department and that progress was expected by September. If approved, the facility could strengthen Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves and ease pressure on the rupee. It could also reduce the country’s dependence on multilateral financing. The proposed support comes as Pakistan continues efforts to improve its external financial position under an International Monetary Fund programme. The IMF programme has required the government to implement difficult fiscal and monetary measures, including higher taxes, spending controls and structural reforms. Pakistan has also been seeking to improve its economic and diplomatic engagement with Washington. Its recent diplomatic role in regional developments has increased expectations that stronger relations with the United States could lead to greater economic cooperation. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s credit outlook received a boost after Moody’s upgraded its sovereign rating from Caa1 to B3. However, the rating agency maintained that Pakistan continues to face challenges related to governance, rule of law, corruption control and government effectiveness. Although the B3 rating represents an improvement, it remains well within the speculative category and is several levels below investment grade.
