Shawn Mendes stars in Gucci’s new Primavera campaign

Shawn Mendes has stepped into a new fashion chapter as one of the faces of Gucci’s latest campaign, “Primavera,” unveiled by the Italian luxury house on August 25. The campaign introduces the collection created for Gucci by creative director Demna and brings together an eclectic group of personalities from music, sport, film and fashion.

Photographed by Michal Chelbin, the campaign features Mendes alongside Tom Brady, BTS member Jin, aespa’s NINGNING, Xiao Zhan, Alex Consani, Rico Nasty, EsDeeKid, Lee Young Ae and Tarzzan. Rather than presenting the stars in a conventional fashion-shoot setting, Chelbin’s portraits draw inspiration from the composition and grandeur of classical Renaissance paintings, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary atmosphere.

For Mendes, the campaign marks another prominent appearance with Gucci. The singer is photographed in a fitted black top and leather glove, showcasing a more striking and fashion-forward side of his image. His appearance arrives as Gucci continues to establish the visual identity of Demna’s first collection for the house.

The Primavera collection introduces a new vocabulary of silhouettes, textures and materials, combining Gucci’s established heritage with Demna’s contemporary approach. For menswear, the collection includes body-conscious silhouettes, fluid fabrics, statement outerwear and leather pieces, alongside recognizable Gucci details and accessories.

The campaign’s concept extends beyond clothing. “Primavera,” meaning spring, is presented by Gucci as a symbol of rebirth and renewal, with love and human connection at the heart of the campaign.

Alongside the portraits, director Johan Renck has created a short film starring Kate Moss. Set to Chris Isaak’s baritone rendition of “Wicked Game,” the film follows a group of strangers as they awaken, encounter one another and eventually fall in love on a dance floor.

The combination of established stars and emerging cultural figures reflects Gucci’s attempt to present a broad vision of its new era. Mendes’ inclusion places the singer within a cast spanning several generations and creative industries, further strengthening his growing presence in the fashion world.

With its intimate photography, Renaissance-inspired imagery and diverse cast, Gucci’s Primavera campaign presents Demna’s debut collection through a story of individuality, attraction and renewal while giving Shawn Mendes another opportunity to explore a bolder side of his style.

Netflix hit with $105 million film theft lawsuit

Netflix is facing a $105 million lawsuit after filmmakers accused the streaming giant of mishandling an unreleased movie, alleging that a master copy of their World War II thriller Fortitude was stolen from the company’s Los Angeles offices, jeopardising the film’s commercial future. According to a lawsuit filed Thursday in a California federal court, writer-producer Simon Afram and his production company Op-Fortitude claim Netflix failed to properly safeguard an unencrypted copy of the film after requesting it for internal review. The complaint states that Netflix first expressed interest in acquiring Fortitude after receiving promotional materials in December 2025. The company later requested a working version of the film in June so executives could screen it internally. The filmmakers said Netflix instructed them to provide the movie through a digital cinema package (DCP), a format commonly used to protect films from unauthorised access during screenings. According to the lawsuit, one of the film’s producers personally delivered the unencrypted drive to Netflix’s Sunset Bronson Studios office on June 15. The producer allegedly instructed the company to delete the files after the screening and notify him when the drive was ready for collection. Ten days later, the filmmakers claim they were informed that the drive had been stolen. An email included in the court filing quotes Netflix’s Head of Film Acquisitions, Sean Berney, who wrote: “This is a first for us. Unfortunately, someone stole a good amount of drives from our office desks this past week. We’ve been working through this with our security teams to no luck. Our piracy teams are on high alert with the breach and will monitor.” Netflix later determined that the other missing drives contained no data. The lawsuit further alleges that Netflix refused to confirm whether it had filed a police report and declined the filmmakers’ request to involve the Los Angeles Police Department, despite the producers filing their own report. Netflix has rejected the allegations, saying it does not accept responsibility for the loss. In a statement, the company said it disputes bearing “the risk of loss for a film delivered without the proper industry-standard safeguards,” while adding that it had offered to monitor piracy websites for any unauthorised release of the film. The streamer also claimed it stopped sharing details of its internal investigation after lawyers representing Afram demanded $165 million, describing the demand as a “hostile attempt to extort money” rather than an effort to resolve the dispute in good faith. The filmmakers argue that the theft has significantly damaged the film’s market value because any potential distributor would now have to be informed that an unencrypted copy may still exist. They claim the incident has complicated acquisition discussions, insurance coverage and marketing plans while increasing the risk of an online leak before the movie’s official release. According to the lawsuit, the producers have paused negotiations with several interested domestic and international distributors until the matter is resolved. Directed by Simon West, Fortitude is based on a true World War II story about British intelligence operatives outsmarting Nazi leadership. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Matthew Goode, Ed Skrein, Jordi Mollà and Alice Eve.

Australian court rejects Indian appeal in Basmati …

An Australian court has dismissed an appeal filed by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in the Basmati word mark case, marking a significant legal development for Pakistan’s rice exporters. According to the Ministry of Commerce, the Australian court’s decision has reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled position that the term “Basmati” cannot be treated as the exclusive property of India. The ruling is being viewed by Pakistani authorities as an important legal success in protecting the rights of the country’s Basmati rice producers and exporters. The Australian court has also ordered the Indian institution APEDA to pay the legal costs associated with the proceedings. The decision follows a legal dispute over the use and registration of the word “Basmati” in Australia. APEDA had applied to register the word “Basmati” as a certification trademark. The application was challenged, leading to legal proceedings concerning whether the term could be claimed exclusively for Indian rice products. Pakistan has consistently maintained that Basmati rice is also produced in Pakistan and that Pakistani exporters should have equal rights to use the name. The Ministry of Commerce said Australian authorities had already acknowledged that Basmati rice is produced in Pakistan, strengthening Islamabad’s position in the dispute. The latest court decision has therefore been welcomed by Pakistani officials as confirmation of the country’s longstanding stance on the geographical and commercial identity of Basmati rice. The Ministry of Commerce stated that the ruling represents an important legal victory for Pakistan because it supports the principle that Pakistani exporters should not be deprived of the right to use the term Basmati for rice produced in the country. Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal congratulated the Ministry of Commerce team on what he described as Pakistan’s legal success in the case. He appreciated the efforts of the officials and legal representatives involved in defending Pakistan’s position before the Australian authorities. The dispute is significant because Basmati rice is an important agricultural and export commodity for both Pakistan and India. The term has considerable commercial value in international markets because consumers associate Basmati with a distinctive variety of aromatic long-grain rice. Pakistan is among the countries known for producing and exporting Basmati rice, particularly from areas in Punjab. The country has sought greater recognition of its rights over the Basmati name in international markets, arguing that the rice is a shared agricultural heritage of the region and is produced on both sides of the border. APEDA’s attempt to register “Basmati” as a certification trademark had raised concerns in Pakistan because exclusive registration could potentially affect Pakistani exporters’ ability to market their products using the internationally recognized name. The Australian court’s rejection of APEDA’s appeal is consequently being seen by Pakistan as an important development in safeguarding its exporters’ commercial interests. The order requiring APEDA to pay legal costs also adds to the significance of the decision for Pakistan. The Ministry of Commerce has emphasized that the ruling strengthens Pakistan’s position in international legal and commercial forums. Pakistani authorities are expected to continue protecting the interests of local rice growers and exporters and ensuring that they retain the right to market their Basmati rice under its recognized name. The decision could also contribute to broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s agricultural exports and promote its Basmati rice in international markets.

Cappadocia to host annual hot air balloon festival

Türkiye’s famous UNESCO World Heritage region of Cappadocia is preparing to host the seventh annual Cappadocia Balloon Festival, featuring 30 special-shaped hot air balloons from 10 countries soaring above the region’s iconic fairy chimneys and rock formations. Organized by Türkiye’s Culture and Tourism Ministry, the four-day event is scheduled to run from July 30 to August 2. International balloon pilots and crews from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Slovakia, Austria, Poland, and Türkiye have begun arriving in the country as final preparations wrap up. The festival’s lineup includes balloons designed in unique figurative shapes, including the Turkish flag, an octopus, an owl, a clown, a chick, a wolf, a duck, a parrot, a rocket, a heart, and the Earth. The special-shaped balloons will ascend each morning at sunrise alongside the 156 standard commercial hot air balloons that operate daily in the region, returning in the evenings for illuminated “balloon glow” displays at the Pasabag Open-Air Museum. Highlighting the event’s distinct appeal, festival coordinator Mehmet Halis Aydogan explained how Cappadocia’s natural geography and existing flight operations set it apart from other international ballooning venues: “Balloon festivals are held in many parts of the world, including major events in the United States, France, Belgium, and Mexico. Cappadocia’s greatest advantage is its extraordinary landscape, where 156 balloons fly every day. It is a place where thousands of people come both to fly in hot air balloons and to watch them. When we decorate the skies with special-shaped balloons, it creates an incredible spectacle. That is what distinguishes us most from other festivals.” A key highlight of this year’s gathering will be the debut of a whale-shaped balloon designed by sixth-grade student Bengi Serra Kaya. Her entry won first prize in the “My Dream Balloon Design Competition,” organized for primary and middle school students, and the specially manufactured balloon will take its inaugural flight during the festival. Cappadocia remains one of the world’s premier hot air balloon destinations, drawing hundreds of thousands of international tourists annually. Organizers note that while global interest in the festival continues to rise, participation numbers are carefully managed to accommodate the region’s busy daily airspace safely.
