Princess Eugenie reveals daughter’s name honouring Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Eugenie has revealed the name of her newborn daughter, paying tribute to members of her family and highlighting her connection to both British and Portuguese heritage.

The royal announced the name on Monday, two weeks after welcoming her third child.

Sharing a photograph of her newborn daughter on social media, Eugenie said her family had spent the past two weeks enjoying a special and peaceful period together.

The princess revealed that her daughter has been named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.

Eugenie said the name was chosen in honour of three people whom she and her family love and admire, including her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

She said the family continues to hold her great-grandmother close to their hearts. The choice of Elizabeth as one of her daughter’s names is therefore seen as a personal tribute to the late monarch.

Eugenie also explained that her daughter’s name reflects connections to English and Portuguese history. She said both places hold special importance for the family and are considered part of their lives.

The arrival of the baby marks another major milestone for Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank.

The couple already have two sons. Their eldest son, August, was born in February 2021. Their second son, Ernest, was born in June 2023.

Eugenie said her two sons have already embraced their new role as older brothers. She described August and Ernest as the “best big brothers” to their newborn sister.

The announcement gives the public its first details about the latest addition to Eugenie’s family after the birth was announced earlier this month.

The choice of Adelaide Elizabeth Annina brings together several family and historical references. The inclusion of Elizabeth is particularly significant because of Eugenie’s close relationship with her late great-grandmother.

Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022 after a reign of more than 70 years. She was a central figure in the lives of several generations of the British royal family.

Eugenie has frequently spoken warmly about her family and the importance of maintaining close relationships with relatives. Her latest announcement continues that tradition while introducing a new generation of the family.

With the arrival of Adelaide, Eugenie and Brooksbank are now parents to three children. Their eldest two sons are expected to play an important role in their younger sister’s early years.

The announcement has also attracted attention because of the unusual combination of names and the historical links highlighted by Eugenie.

For the family, however, the occasion remains primarily a personal celebration. Eugenie said the past two weeks had been filled with love and family time as they welcomed their daughter.

Govt increases fuel prices as international oil ra…

The Government of Pakistan has announced a fresh increase in petroleum prices, raising the price of petrol by Rs. 1.63 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs. 1.55 per litre. The revised prices will come into effect from July 29, according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division. Following the latest revision, petrol will now cost Rs. 335.81 per litre, while high-speed diesel will be available at Rs. 388.38 per litre. Officials said the increase reflects fluctuations in international crude oil prices caused by renewed tensions in the Persian Gulf, which have affected global energy markets. The government continues to collect substantial taxes and duties on petroleum products. Consumers currently pay around Rs110 per litre in taxes and levies on petrol, while diesel carries approximately Rs96 per litre in taxes and duties. Fuel prices have remained volatile throughout the year. Diesel had previously reached a record Rs520.35 per litre in early April after rising sharply from Rs281 per litre during the escalation of the US-Iran conflict. Similarly, petrol climbed to a peak of Rs458.41 per litre after increasing from Rs266 per litre in early March. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik recently announced that fuel prices would now be reviewed daily instead of weekly. The decision aims to ensure domestic fuel prices better reflect international market trends, especially during periods of global uncertainty. Under the new policy, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) will determine daily fuel prices based on changes in international oil markets. However, the move has faced criticism from the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which has warned that it may launch protests against the daily pricing mechanism. Petrol is primarily used by private vehicle owners, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small transport operators. As a result, any increase directly impacts middle- and lower-income households. High-speed diesel is widely used in heavy transport, agriculture, power generation, and industrial sectors, meaning price hikes can also increase transportation and production costs, contributing to inflation. With monthly sales of 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes, petrol and diesel remain Pakistan’s largest petroleum products by consumption and are significant contributors to government revenue. As global oil prices continue to fluctuate, consumers should expect further adjustments in domestic fuel prices in the coming weeks.

US offers $15 million reward for Iran drone networ…

WASHINGTON: The United States has announced a $15 million reward for information leading to the disruption of an alleged financial network linked to Iran’s drone programme, escalating pressure on entities accused of supporting the country’s military operations. The reward was announced by the Rewards for Justice programme run by the US State Department. According to the programme, the offer targets information about financial networks associated with Kimia Pars Sepehran Company (KIPAS), which Washington alleges is involved in producing drones for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and its regional allies. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the programme said it is seeking information on seven senior officials, their associates and the financial infrastructure that allegedly supports the company’s operations. US authorities said individuals who provide credible and actionable information may qualify not only for the financial reward but could also receive assistance with relocation if necessary. The announcement identified the individuals of interest as Hassan Aram Banizadeh, Reza Naharvani, Mehdi Naqaneh, Hadi Zavaraki, Abolfazl Meshkani, Abbas Sartaji, and Ehsan Mohaghegh. The latest reward offer is part of Washington’s broader campaign to disrupt networks it believes are involved in the financing, development and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles used by Iran and affiliated groups across the Middle East. US officials have repeatedly accused Iran of supplying drones and military technology to allied armed groups operating in the region. Tehran, however, has consistently rejected allegations that it provides weapons in violation of international obligations, maintaining that its military activities are conducted within its national defence framework. The new announcement comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran over regional security, sanctions and Iran’s military capabilities. Analysts say targeting financial facilitators has become a key element of the US strategy to weaken supply chains supporting Iran’s drone programme. The Rewards for Justice initiative has previously offered multimillion-dollar rewards for information related to terrorism, sanctions evasion and other activities considered threats to US national security. The latest offer underscores Washington’s continued focus on disrupting networks it believes contribute to Iran’s expanding drone capabilities.

Atiqa Odho questions casting choice in Dar Ke Nijat

Veteran Pakistani actress Atiqa Odho has shared her thoughts on what she believes was a casting mismatch in the drama serial Dar Ke Nijat, saying one particular casting decision made it difficult for her to fully connect with the story. During a recent episode of the television review show Kya Drama Hai, Odho discussed different aspects of the drama and praised most of its casting. However, she admitted that she struggled to accept actress Saba Hameed in the role of Faran Tahir’s mother, explaining that the casting felt unconvincing to her. According to Odho, the overall cast of Dar Ke Nijat has been carefully selected, but she felt that Saba Hameed portraying the mother of Faran Tahir did not appear believable on screen. She noted that while actors are capable of playing a wide variety of characters regardless of their real-life age or appearance, audiences also need to feel that the relationships presented in a drama are convincing. The actress explained that her reservations were influenced by another television drama currently airing at the same time. In Bus Tera Saath Ho, Saba Hameed and Faran Tahir are seen portraying husband and wife, making it difficult for viewers to immediately accept them as mother and son in Dar Ke Nijat. Odho pointed out that watching the same pair in two entirely different family dynamics simultaneously affected the realism of the characters for her. She said that although actors often take on diverse roles, parallel broadcasts can sometimes create confusion and reduce the emotional impact of a performance. She also commented on Saba Hameed’s appearance, describing her as an elegant, stylish and youthful actress whose screen presence does not naturally align with traditional grandmotherly roles. Odho said that despite efforts to transform her look for the character, she still found it difficult to view her as an elderly matriarch. In her opinion, the makeover appeared forced rather than natural, preventing her from becoming fully immersed in the story. She stressed that this was her personal perspective and acknowledged that other viewers may have different opinions about the casting. Odho further remarked that she understands actors frequently portray characters outside their real-life age brackets and appreciates the creative freedom that comes with acting. Nevertheless, she believes that casting decisions should also consider audience perception, particularly when the same performers are appearing in multiple dramas at the same time in dramatically different relationships. The veteran actress emphasized that this single issue stood out to her while watching Dar Ke Nijat, even though she otherwise admired the production and its performances. Her comments have since sparked discussion among drama fans, with many debating whether simultaneous casting in contrasting family roles can affect a viewer’s ability to suspend disbelief. The conversation has also reignited broader discussions about casting choices in television dramas, particularly when popular actors appear in multiple projects airing concurrently. While some viewers agree that repeated pairings can be distracting, others argue that talented performers should be judged solely on how convincingly they portray their characters, regardless of their roles in other productions.

Maryam Aurangzeb rejects PPP’s rigging claim…

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) leader and Senior Minister of Punjab, Maryam Aurangzeb, strongly rejected allegations of election rigging made by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), questioning the credibility of such claims by pointing to the PPP’s own government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Speaking to the media in Rawalpindi, Maryam Aurangzeb said that the PPP’s accusations of electoral fraud were baseless and contradictory. Referring to PPP leader Nayyar Bukhari’s remarks, she said it was unreasonable to claim widespread rigging on the basis of only two ballot papers when the election involved thousands of votes. According to her, isolated incidents cannot be used to undermine the credibility of an entire electoral process. She further argued that since the Pakistan Peoples Party is in power in Azad Kashmir, its allegations of election manipulation effectively amount to accusing its own administration of wrongdoing. “If you insist that rigging took place in Azad Kashmir, then you are accusing your own government of conducting fraudulent elections,” she remarked. Aurangzeb added that the people of both Punjab and Azad Kashmir had exercised their democratic right and chosen not to vote for the PPP, and that the party should accept the public verdict instead of making unfounded allegations. Maryam Aurangzeb also criticized the timing of the PPP’s accusations, noting that claims of rigging were being made as soon as polling began. She argued that elections are won through the support of voters, not through repeated allegations. “You do not win elections by making accusations; you win them by earning the trust and votes of the people,” she said. Addressing another issue, Aurangzeb questioned attempts to politicize a recent death, stating that the deceased had not died from gunfire. She asked whether political opponents now intended to use even such incidents for political gain, criticizing what she described as the exploitation of sensitive matters for electoral purposes. Turning her attention to governance, Aurangzeb said the Pakistan Peoples Party should focus on improving its performance in Sindh, where it has governed for years. She argued that better governance would provide meaningful relief to the people of the province. Drawing an analogy, she said that if a student fails to prepare for an examination, they cannot simply lock the examination hall. In the same way, she suggested that political parties cannot blame the electoral process when they fail to secure public support. Aurangzeb maintained that the Pakistan Muslim League (N) had earned the confidence of the electorate through its performance and public service. She expressed surprise that the PPP was repeatedly raising issues related to gunfire and election rigging, saying such rhetoric reflected an unwillingness to accept the democratic outcome. She also referred to a speech delivered by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari the previous day, questioning the tone and substance of his remarks. According to Aurangzeb, the PPP should respect the will of the voters rather than challenging the legitimacy of the election without sufficient evidence. Concluding her remarks, Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized that Pakistan’s electoral system provides legal mechanisms for addressing disputes. She said that if the PPP genuinely believes irregularities occurred, it should present its evidence before the Election Commission or the relevant election tribunals. Instead of complaining publicly, she urged the party to pursue the appropriate legal channels. She concluded by saying that the PPP’s own voters had rejected its narrative and that the party should contest elections through democratic means while respecting the mandate given by the people.

Former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji dies at 97

BEIJING: Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, a key figure in the country’s economic transformation during the 1990s, has died at the age of 97. Zhu was known for his direct speaking style and his strong support for economic reform. His tenure was marked by major changes aimed at restructuring China’s state-dominated economy and opening it further to global markets. He served as China’s vice premier from 1991 to 1998 before becoming premier, a position he held until early 2003. Zhu’s political career began decades earlier. He graduated from Tsinghua University and joined the Communist Party in 1949. During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent to work in the countryside and experienced a period of political hardship. He was later rehabilitated and gradually returned to senior government positions. In 1987, Zhu became mayor of Shanghai. During his tenure, he helped guide the city through early economic reforms and development that eventually contributed to its emergence as a major international financial centre. He moved to Beijing in 1991 after joining the central government. As vice premier and later premier, Zhu became closely associated with efforts to tackle economic overheating, inflation and financial instability. His government introduced wide-ranging reforms to state-owned enterprises. Many inefficient state companies were closed, restructured or privatised, while large numbers of workers were laid off. Zhu also strengthened the central government’s control over taxation and introduced reforms that encouraged private home ownership. Those changes played a major role in reshaping China’s housing market. One of his most significant achievements was helping China secure membership of the World Trade Organization in 2001, following years of difficult negotiations. China formally joined the organisation in December that year. The WTO accession accelerated China’s integration into the global economy and helped expand international trade and investment. However, Zhu’s reform programme also had critics. Some observers argued that changes to agricultural policy, tax arrangements and state-owned enterprises created difficulties that later governments had to address. Despite those criticisms, Zhu remained widely regarded as one of the most influential economic reformers in modern Chinese history. His reputation for blunt remarks became particularly prominent after a collection of his speeches was published in 2011. The books contained unusually candid assessments of corruption, government debt, banking problems and weaknesses in public administration. The speeches attracted significant public attention because they addressed many of the economic and social challenges facing China at the time. Zhu warned about corruption, inequality and problems created by local officials. His comments continued to attract interest among reform-minded officials, academics and members of the public long after he left office. His death marks the passing of a leader who played a central role in one of the most consequential periods of China’s economic development. Zhu’s legacy is closely linked to the difficult reforms of the 1990s, when China moved towards a more market-oriented economy while maintaining the political control of the Communist Party.
