Faisal Kundi calls for modern arms for K-P police

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has called for the provincial police to be equipped with modern weapons, advanced technology and additional resources to strengthen their ability to counter terrorism.

Speaking at Governor House during a meeting with a 33-member delegation of Sindh Police Deputy Superintendents of Police visiting the province for training, Kundi praised the K-P police for continuing to serve on the frontline despite severe security challenges.

The governor said policing in K-P was fundamentally different from other provinces because of the persistent threat of terrorism. He stressed that police personnel needed modern weapons, more bulletproof vehicles and advanced technological equipment to respond to emerging threats, including attacks involving militant quadcopters.

Kundi said proposals had also been forwarded to the provincial government regarding improvements in police salaries. He maintained that better resources and welfare measures were essential for strengthening the force.

He said K-P’s long border with Afghanistan had created additional security challenges, while the Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps were contributing significantly to border protection. He urged the government to provide comprehensive support to all law-enforcement agencies engaged in counterterrorism operations.

Addressing a question about cross-border terrorism, Kundi said attacks originating from Afghan territory were unacceptable. He claimed that evidence had surfaced regarding the involvement of some Afghan nationals in terrorist incidents in K-P and said the repatriation of undocumented Afghan nationals was continuing.

Polling resumes at 23 stations in AJK’s Bagh

BAGH: Voting is underway at 23 polling stations in two constituencies of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Bagh district as authorities conduct re-polling following the suspension of results from the earlier phase. Polling began at 8am and is scheduled to continue until 5pm. Security arrangements have been strengthened around the polling stations to ensure voters can cast their ballots without fear or disruption. The re-polling covers parts of LA-15 Bagh Central and LA-16 Eastern Bagh. Voting had earlier failed to take place at nine polling stations in LA-15 and 14 stations in LA-16. The AJK Election Commission subsequently withheld the results of both constituencies and ordered voting at the affected stations. In LA-15, Pakistan Peoples Party candidate Sardar Ziaul Qamar had secured 16,637 votes in the polling that took place earlier. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was second with 15,015 votes, while Jamaat-i-Islami candidate retired Brigadier Dr Muhammad Khan received 12,259 votes. In LA-16, PML-N’s Sardar Mir Akbar was leading on the basis of votes already counted. He had obtained 19,515 votes and held a lead of 3,225 votes over PPP candidate Sardar Qamaruz Zaman. The contest in both constituencies has remained tense. Candidates have levelled allegations of large-scale rigging against their political opponents. AJK Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said adequate security had been deployed at the polling stations. He said sufficient police and other law-enforcement personnel were available to provide voters with a secure environment. The re-polling is part of the third phase of the AJK elections, which has been conducted amid concerns over law and order in parts of the region. The third phase was initially scheduled across Poonch Division, covering 11 constituencies in Bagh, Haveli, Poonch and Sudhnoti districts. However, the Election Commission limited polling to Bagh and Haveli because of security concerns. Polling was held earlier in both districts, but the commission withheld the results of two Bagh constituencies after voting could not be conducted at the 23 affected stations. The commission had already announced the result of LA-14 Bagh-I, commonly known as Dhirkot. Jammu Kashmir Awami Dast-o-Bazu Party candidate Sajid Iqbal Abbasi won the seat by securing 40,522 votes. Another closely watched contest was LA-17 Haveli, where AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was a candidate. The constituency became embroiled in controversy after the returning officer declared Rathore the winner. PML-N candidate Engineer Mohsin Aziz challenged the result and claimed that an assurance had been given that the result would not be announced before his complaint was considered. The AJK chief election commissioner heard arguments from both sides and later reserved his decision.

Ronaldo and Georgina’s first wedding photo goes viral

LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez have given fans an intimate glimpse into their long-awaited wedding, with the first photograph from their private ceremony quickly attracting attention online. The Portuguese football superstar and his longtime partner reportedly tied the knot on Aug 11 in a civil ceremony at their home in Cascais, Portugal. Rather than organising a lavish celebrity wedding, the couple chose a quiet family gathering surrounded by their five children and a small circle of loved ones. The setting was reportedly their living room, adding an unusually personal touch to an event that could easily have become one of the world’s most extravagant celebrity weddings. A meaningful Gucci choice Ronaldo and Georgina also made a fashion statement with their wedding outfits, both choosing the luxury Italian brand Gucci. Georgina opted for an elegant white silk skirt suit instead of a traditional bridal gown, while Ronaldo wore a light khaki-coloured suit. Their children were dressed in soft, coordinated shades, giving the family portrait a simple yet polished appearance. The Gucci connection carries special meaning for the couple. Ronaldo and Georgina first met in 2016 at a Gucci store in Madrid, where Georgina was working as a sales assistant. What began as an encounter at a fashion store eventually developed into one of the most closely followed relationships in international sport and entertainment. Why the couple chose simplicity Despite their glamorous lifestyle, Georgina has previously spoken about wanting a more personal family celebration rather than an elaborate wedding. She explained that as a child she had imagined a grand wedding involving a palace, a large procession and a long bridal dress. Her priorities changed over time, however, and she came to value a quiet celebration with her partner and children more than luxury or spectacle. The intimate ceremony appears to have reflected that wish, keeping the focus firmly on family. Is Ronaldo nearing retirement? The wedding news also coincides with renewed attention surrounding Ronaldo’s football future. At 41, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has indicated that the 2026-27 season could potentially be the final campaign of his remarkable career. Ronaldo has said he wants to leave football with a strong legacy, although he has not formally announced his retirement. For now, however, the football icon appears to be celebrating a new chapter away from the pitch — with Georgina and their family at the centre of it.

Jury selection underway in LA trial of former gang leader charged in 1996 Tupac Shakur murder

Jury selection began this week at the Regional Justice Centre in Las Vegas for the long-delayed trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who is accused of orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. Davis, 63, faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement, carrying a potential sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted. Prosecutors allege that Davis, a former shot-caller for the South Side Compton Crips, supplied the firearm and directed the attack in retaliation for an assault on his nephew, Orlando Anderson, by Shakur and Death Row Records associates following a boxing match at the MGM Grand. The case relies heavily on self-incriminating accounts provided by Davis, including statements made to police in 2008 and details published in his 2019 co-authored memoir, Compton Street Legend. While prosecutors maintain that Davis breached non-prosecution conditions through his public commentary, defence attorneys argue that the book was ghostwritten and heavily embellished for financial gain, maintaining that Davis was not present in Las Vegas on the night of the shooting. Jury selection is expected to continue through the end of the week to establish a final panel of 12 jurors and four alternates. Opening arguments are scheduled to commence today, on 17 August, in a trial projected to span roughly four weeks.

Sebastian Stan and Annabelle Wallis welcome first baby together

Sebastian Stan and Annabelle Wallis have officially become parents, marking a joyful new chapter in their relationship after nearly four years together. The couple reportedly welcomed their first child last month. While the new parents have chosen to keep the arrival private, they have not revealed the baby’s name, gender, or any additional details. Earlier this year, the pair confirmed they were expecting their first child when they were photographed during a stroll in New York City. Annabelle Wallis proudly showed off her baby bump in a relaxed outfit featuring a loose-fitting dress layered with a brown jacket and accessorized with a cheetah-print handbag. Stan opted for a casual look with brown trousers, a white shirt, and a denim jacket. Although the couple have largely kept their personal life away from the spotlight, Sebastian Stan recently opened up about his thoughts on fatherhood while promoting his upcoming film Fjord, directed by Cristian Mungiu. The film follows a man who is forced to examine his worth both as a father and as a person, a storyline that resonated deeply with the actor as he prepared to welcome his own child. Reflecting on the life-changing experience, Stan shared that becoming a father has made him think more seriously about the kind of parent and person he wants to be. He said his biggest goal is to be a good father, adding that he feels a growing sense of responsibility. The 43-year-old actor explained that despite his age and career success, he still believes he is learning and growing as a person. He also revealed that he enjoys reading different perspectives and experiences to better understand the world around him. Stan and Wallis first sparked dating rumours in May 2022 after they were seen together at Robert Pattinson’s birthday celebration. Over time, the couple gradually made more public appearances, confirming their romance without making many public comments about their relationship. In February 2024, Wallis accompanied Stan to the Berlin International Film Festival for the premiere of A Different Man. A few months later, the pair walked the red carpet together at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Stan’s film The Apprentice, in which he portrays Donald Trump. Professionally, Stan continues to stay busy with several high-profile projects. Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting his return as Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, in Avengers: Doomsday. The highly anticipated superhero film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 18, while the actor now also begins an exciting new role in his personal life as a first-time father.

Motorway police must avoid unlawful challans

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has assured goods transporters that he will not allow the motorway police to issue a single unjustified or unlawful traffic challan, stressing that the government will honour all commitments made to the transport sector. The minister made the remarks at a reception hosted in his honour by goods transporters following the successful conclusion of negotiations between transporters and the government. Addressing the gathering, Abdul Aleem Khan urged transporters to comply with the axle-load policy, saying the regulation serves their own interests. He explained that carrying excessive weight puts additional pressure on vehicles and causes significant damage to roads and other transport infrastructure. The federal minister acknowledged the vital role of the transport industry in keeping the country’s economy moving. He said the government needs the cooperation of transporters to support economic growth and improve the overall transportation system. Abdul Aleem Khan also assured the transport community that he would personally monitor their concerns if necessary. “If required, I will stand on the roads myself to observe the problems faced by transporters,” he said, underlining his commitment to resolving issues through direct engagement. The development follows high-level talks chaired by Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, during which representatives of the Pakistan Goods Transport Association held negotiations with federal and provincial government officials. The talks ended successfully, prompting goods transporters to suspend their nationwide strike, which had continued for nine days. The transporters have agreed to postpone the strike for 40 days and resume the movement of goods across the country. The agreement has temporarily eased tensions between the government and the transport sector, while both sides are expected to use the 40-day period to address outstanding concerns and work toward a longer-term resolution.
